To counter this, we finally decided that prom attendance was conditional on good behavior throughout the year.
Son's school does exactly this - works very well & they are very strict about it.

This is another time I'm glad we had a boy & not a girl laugh

When did these become a thing over here? I'm 40 and went to an all boys boarding school so funnily enough we never had one. I thought they were an American thing, but I know that they've been around for at least ten years.

My son just started high school so I'm dreading this in five years. At least he won't need a dress (well it will be 2026 so who knows...).
I'm 39 and went to a normal public school and we had one; this was rural Scotland as well, not a major metropolis.

There's your answer to the money, say yes to them all and charge them a ton each, even if you have to five separate trips.

I went to an all boys grammar school and I believe there was a 6th form leavers do (joint with the nearby girls grammar school), though I am not sure if it was called a 'prom'.

Made up for it at Sandhurst, now that's a party.
I bet it was, it must be a helluva feeling when the clock strikes midnight and you are officially commissioned.

I am quite sure that not surviving RMAS will be a regret that I probably won't ever fully get over.

I don't think he could fit 5 prom girls in his GT. wink Even if he could, unless he's a close friend of the family, then I don't see why he'd be a miserable git for not doing it.
Nope I'd get 3. I'm not sure if they are all at the same school, but when we get closer I'll see if they are still keen.

Our cricket club captain has a AMV so hoping I can rope him in for at least 1.

My point in this thread mind is the extent parents are going to in order to organise their kids proms. It's months away. It's almost like, who do I know with remotely a flashy car.... I don't get it as such..

Wonder if I'll get away with a burnout.

Nobody's mentioned shoes ... what's the budget for shoes ?

ETA
I went to Hall Cross when it was Doncaster Grammar School. And the Grand Daughter's going to New College which I think was/is Hayfield ?

New College is built on land that was part of Hayfields sports ground. Hayfield no longer has a 6th form - although many of its kids go to New College

Shoes have been mentioned as has the ride to college and I have closed my ears!

Choose a charity and tell them £100 donation each, can't be much more than a 10 to 15 min journey for each one.

Please tell me I’m not the only one who finds it crushingly ironic that in a thread relating to school (and therefore education) “rite of passage” is being routinely spelt as “right”

My sister left school in the early 90s. She had sit-down meal for those leaving 6th Form and they went off down the pub afterwards. Nothing after GSCEs.

No Leavers' Do after I did GCSEs going into the late 90s. On results day a bunch of us lads went to a mate's pub (family owned) and played pool all night.

When I went to 6th Form the uppers had a formal leavers' do and hired out a function room but can't remember if they hired out limo's. Our year wanted to emulate them and I remember ours was called a prom and I remember some people turned up in limos. Some of my mates hired out suits and I turned up in shirt, blazer, shoes, and slacks. Felt like a bit of a lemon as everyone made an effort!

By then Proms had taken off in our school and GCSE students were having them as well and before you know it 11 year olds and nursery kids have proms/leaving do's.

They're insignificant moments in my life - hence me not making an effort to hire a suit. On the one hand we had grown up together and on the other I knew full well some of us would drift apart with our own lives and uni and the real world offered greater opportunities. Proms are just another excuse to have a knees up with mates you might never see again.

Years and years ago a young lady was barred from our Prom for intentionally missing her Science GCSE exam (amongst other things) to attend a concert in London.

Dresses and cars and all the other stuff had been purchased and there was much parental wailing and complaining but the school held firm. She even turned up on the evening and many tears were shed but was refused entry to the site. Two deputy heads at doors wouldn’t let her in. Most entertaining after poor choices were made.

Thats a point what happens if its a single sex school? Do they find a boys school and a girls school and have a combined one or just skip the prom all together.
