I've found out today that there is, apparently, quite a furor brewing as Tesco are now pricing good differently depending on whether you use your clubcard or not. I guess my initial reaction was WTF!?!?? (cue Daily Mail outrage followed by compoface) but to be honest I'm now thinking well why not? It's a way of trying to get everyone to sign-up and showing a definite benefit for doing so.

Any naysayers to argue why this is a bad thing?

If they said we will give you 10% discount for using your club card would that be an issue? Because that's essentially what they're saying.

Or using a trade discount card in another outlet?

I find it bloody annoying as I don't want to give them my data beyond them already linking my electronic payment method details to whatever I purchase.
But they can do what they like in their own shop we have to suck it up or FO presumably.

It’s annoying at the checkout when your card won’t scan and your pissed off having to pay more.

Imagine the more tinfoil you could buy with the savings though! smile

The biggest issue with this system, isn't the cheaper prices using clubcard in exchange for your data, oh no.

It's the over inflated prices when not on clubcard offer, and the constant changing of prices to make it feel like a 'bargain'.

Boils my urine when an item has been x price forever, then suddenly is x + 50% for no reason, then to knock it back to

x + 30% trying to make it appear a bargain.

Clubcard was always intended to be a reward scheme for existing customers through discounts, vouchers or special offers. Of course, it wanted to upsell at the same time, but the scheme can offer a way of saving money to its users while increasing overall footfall to the store.

This, you're not getting money off by using a Tesco Clubcard, you're just paying the same as other supermarkets that don't jack up their prices.

I don't shop at Tesco because their prices are so out of line with Asda and Morrisons. One of the great things about the UK is that you've got so much choice in supermarkets, don't like one shop, just go to a competitor.

Where is this furor? Who did you find out from?

They've been advertising the cheaper prices if you use Clubcard for about the last 6 months, maybe you should look out from under your rock...

Makes me even less likely to shop there now, with the cost of living rises Aldi and Lidl make more sense as they’re far cheaper.

Wouldn’t want to do a full shop at tesco to get to the till and realise I’ve forgot the clubcard.

Just give them your address and they can do it without the card.

I don’t mind Lidl but they mostly do their own brand goods and some of them are excellent, some of them I wouldn’t feed to my dogs.

7th may 2019 is when Tesco started doing this.

I've had a clubcard for years, it's saved me a fotune on cinema tickets as the points value is trippled if you use them for partner purchases rather than money off groceries.

If budget is an issue, shop around. I tend to buy things with a long shelf life when they have a big discount on them, even if that means i dont need it for six months. Unless you die you will have to buy it and at a higher price, seems a no brainer. biggrin

The Clubcard inspectors will have all my personal information what with me buying the odd £3 meal deal or pipe of pringles.

Google is more likely to have more information on you than Tesco ever will no matter how much you use your clubcard.

Sticks.

I also use a Tesco credit card for everything and set the DD to clear it every month. Now that pretty well everything that was a cash payment is a card, I've 'earned' £1800 in the last 2 years, including Tesco groceries.

I've noticed that they've lowered the headline prices on things they used to discount by a large amount, eg coffee.

Aldi and Lidl are fine if you've one nearby, and have the time, or if Asda or Morrison's deliver. Tesco is still noticeably cheaper than Sainsbury's though.

A furore brewing? They've been doing this for ages. Instead of bogof offers and other discounts the discounts on some products are for clubcard customers. Doesn't worry me. The clubcard scheme is great too, saved us loads on family days out and other stuff.

Hello to you back in 2019. Make the most of holidays and getting out and about - you won’t BELIEVE what is coming in 2020.

Funnily enough I read about the history of Tesco Clubcard just the other day on Twitter. If you’ve got a spare 5 mins it’s worth a read.

Some of it I suspect is dog.

But saying that, their fillet steaks are good, I just hope they are not dog.

Blimey, why have I never managed to work where we literally had a swordfight. Christ at one place we even had a genuine Wilkinson Sword on display. Place used to make the stainless razor blade strip.
