Bit stuck where I am. Just a Tesco and an M&S in my high street.

Only go to Marks if you want a treat or see how the other half live.
MrsMDMA shops at M&S. Loads cheaper than Tesco. The offers are better, rewards are better, no messy pricing etc. Personally, I’ve found Tesco to be the dearest of all the supermarkets. I’ve never understood how it’s the biggest.
Do you only shop in Express or metro stores!?

Loads of data showing Tesco and ASDA are generally next cheapest after Lidl/Aldi.

I have a clubcard solely as one of my cars mapped for Momentum 99 so with every fill-up it all adds up but it's a QR code attached to my car keyring so I usually forget it if I haven't driven to the shops or I've driven another car.

It looks like all the bottle deals at Tesco require the club card, went to the checkout at a Tesco express last week with six bottles which should have been a tenner with the clubcard but it came to £16, luckily the cashier scanned their personal card so I got it for £10.

Don't know the policy in Tesco but when Mrs F was working in a Sainsbo's pharmacy one of the till cashiers got marched up to manager's office and shortly after straight out of the door on suspension for gross misconduct for doing exactly that. Eventually fired. Different arrangement on the card rules so perhaps not exactly parallel circumstances to be fair.

Surely it’s still theft? If I’m shopping with company credit card I’m not allowed to use my personal discounts (which come through the company in the first place so would actually make it cheaper for them) or gain any points etc on anyones card. Pretty sure that’s the same for most.

It’s annoying at the checkout when your card won’t scan and your pissed off having to pay more.
I only take my phone when I pop to Tesco. I have the clubcard app which also contains my credit card details. One scan of phone to pay and use clubcard.

Simple.

I tried an Aldi once, i felt dirty, it was a horrible shopping experience. laugh
I started shopping at Aldi and i do agree that it is a bit grim compared to other supermarkets, probably down to the customers rather than a reflection of the store or what they sell, I actually find the food to be good quality in the main.

I'm saving £20+ a week on my weekly shop over other supermarkets going there so i'll put up with it whilst the difference remains

I dare say 80% of their regular customers don't have a Clubcard...
Does make you wonder how many customers don't. I don't although my other half does but I rarely shop in Tesco. The one near my office in central London doesn't seem to have any difference in prices where as one local to me in Surrey does.

Or they'll just ask the person behind them if they want to scan their clubcard. Happened to me the other day, lady in front got her discounts and I got some more points towards my Eurotunnel vouchers, win win.
You'd hope that's the way it goes, I mean I'd have no problem letting someone scan their card for my shopping. That said, I wonder how many people would just pay and then realise or perhaps not even realise but have paid X amount over what is basically a normal price.

Clubcard was always intended to be a reward scheme for existing customers through discounts, vouchers or special offers. Of course, it wanted to upsell at the same time, but the scheme can offer a way of saving money to its users while increasing overall footfall to the store.
Always was but of late, the Clubcard price is the price the goods sold for about 2 months ago, the new full price is +25% in many case.
I know prices are going up due to many reasons including fuel costs but as a regular Tesco shopper I have notice large increases, much more than the apparent RPI/CPI.

And yet Aldi products (and Lidl) continue to win awards for quality over the other supermarkets and branded products!

Individual profiles too, as far as I am aware.
Most of the people that are 'worried' about their data haven't got a clue as to what data is collected and how it's used. None of it is personal identifiable data. They just bucket you as a user who may buy pet food or baby products, for example. Then, you may receive marketing messages online or via the Clubcard mailouts themselves with offers that are relevant to your purchase behavours. Same goes for the data that Google collects. It's no big deal.

Knowing how they store that data, the way they access it, and the data experts they have at Tesco, I'd say you needn't worry.

The biggest issue with this system, isn't the cheaper prices using clubcard in exchange for your data, oh no.

It's the over inflated prices when not on clubcard offer, and the constant changing of prices to make it feel like a 'bargain'.
This, you're not getting money off by using a Tesco Clubcard, you're just paying the same as other supermarkets that don't jack up their prices.

I don't shop at Tesco because their prices are so out of line with Asda and Morrisons. One of the great things about the UK is that you've got so much choice in supermarkets, don't like one shop, just go to a competitor.
Taking just one Item as an example, Pepsi Max cherry. My wife likes a glass now and then. Shopping at Sainsbury's the other day and it was priced at £2.10/2 litre bottle. But in store at Tesco it's standard (non-Clubcard) price is £1.75. Already a saving of 35p over Sainsburys. Scan your clubcard and it drops to £1.25/2 litre bottle. Which is cheaper than it was before ALL the supermarkets hiked their prices "because cost of living increases". So I skipped buying it at Sainsburys, and went into Tesco the next day and bought three bottles WITH my clubcard. A £2.55 saving on one line item.

Picking another line item from a shop i did this morning. The 'Caledonian Food Company' Seriously® Spreadable Vintage Cheddar (125 gram pot). Sainsburys price? Currently discounted by 50p to £1.10. Tesco price £1.35. But as I was in store I noticed that the 8 x 15 gram Triangles pack of the same product (total 120 grams) was priced at £1.25. Cheaper, per 100 grams, than the pot at "normal" price. But when my Clubcard knocked that down to £1.00 it was a no-brainer.

So two items checked, and both items, even without Clubcard prices, were cheaper than the undiscounted price at a peer rival store. And Clubcard pricing dropped those prices further. I think so long as you are not being duped into buying things you wouldn't normally buy, then this dual pricing Clubcard malarkey is only a good thing if you shop with your eyes open and your wits about you.

Click on peters profile and it shows a link to his business, it tells you all about his previous employment role before retirement, his business address and his mobile phone number. You can easily find his YouTube account with lots of videos, who hosts his business servers etc. He really could do better if he wanted to keep his data intact.

It's pretty much impossible to stay unknown to big data these days, posting on a forum certainly doesn't help, but it brings benefits such as publicising a business.

One of the good things about modern pricing is you get under the headline cost, a breakdown of price/Kg or price/litre, you can then compare the cost properly.

The one that always seems to pay doing this is washing pods and conditioner, where you get lots of the same product in different sizes. You can save a fortune looking the cost per item. Then if there is a discount using clubcard on that item, you then just do a bit of mental mathematics and you see what's the best deal.

It always surprises me how few people do this, and just pick an item off the shelf.

Remember you also get Clubcard rewards which can be useful.

Had a tenners worth of vouchers that equaled £30 off my ferry fare in a couple of weeks.

Every little helps…

This is what we call "cherry picking" or "lying by statistics".

Everyone knows that Sainsbos is more expensive hence the original conversation centred around ASDA and Morrisons. It's like saying it's cheaper than M&S... well duh, but M&S aren't trying to be cheap. I've pretty much dropped Sainsburys into the same category (I.E. a down market Waitrose).

At Morrisons that bottle of Pepsi Max is £1.75, but you can get 2 for £3 bringing the per unit cost down to £1.50. You don't need a card to access that pricing, it's available to everyone. The same bottle at ASDA is £1.50 at normal pricing but it's on offer for £1.25 at the moment.

https://groceries.asda.com/product/sugar-free-diet...
https://groceries.morrisons.com/products/pepsi-max...

Your spreadable cheese (council thread is that way) is only £1 at ASDA but £1.60 at Morrisons.

https://groceries.asda.com/product/cheese-spreads/...
https://groceries.morrisons.com/products/seriously...

However if I'm going to Morrisons, I'll generally get something decent out of their cheesemonger's selection (I'm partial to the Wyke Island Cheddar). That won't be as cheap as the mass produced cheese.

The big savings at Morrisons and ASDA tend to be in the twofer and BOGOF products (I.E. at ASDA you can get 2 x 650g Chicken breasts for £7) but my point is, this pricing is available to everyone without having to sign up for anything.

I do most of my shopping at ASDA as for my basket, it's continually the cheapest supermarket except for perhaps ALDI/LIDL (who I've nothing against, but for some reason can never seem to find some of the things I'm after in store). Somewhere like Morrisons I'll visit less frequently but usually for specific products that only they offer, if I want to pay above the odds I'll visit Waitrose or M&S (the M&S single source coffee has to be the best of the supermarket coffees IMHO)

But but but, if I want to go to Asda, that's £6 in fuel. Morrisons £6.20. Tesco less than £1. To Marks the travel cost is just over a fiver, but worth it for particular stuff, plus opportunity to go in the big Lidl opposite.

As before it's horses for courses. Plus you have to be sure that they'll have what you want AND it's on offer, and you actually want twofer or BOGOF.

Yellowjack was right, you have to have your wits about you and eyes open, plus consider the whole picture.

As always in these things there is no one right answer, but too many folks assume that what works for them is the right answer across the nation.

Shop at Morrisons & pay with a Barclaycard & there is frequently 10% cashback applied to your card. Sometimes only on spends over £30 but sometimes on lesser purchases. That is our nearest supermarket (1/2 mile).

We also use Sainsbury's for the occassionly delivery & the wife also shops in Lidi & Aldi.

There is a Tesco about 4 miles away that we often drive past but can't remeber the last time we bought something in there. We do have a Clubcard.
