We think of air travel as being safe, however In 2024 there were 1,417 aviation accidents in the USA alone!
257 were fatal incidents, with 306 reported deaths.
We think of driving as safe, with over 44,000 killed in road accidents in the US in 2024.257 were fatal incidents, with 306 reported deaths.
Most of us get in our cars almost daily, and think nothing of it, yet for a lot of us , it's probably the most dangerous thing we'll ever do. Drive safe everyone!

Everything ok?
BTW what did you have done?
Did it hurt?
I had a lump on my thyroid. Biopsies were inconclusive for cancer, and it was growing, so they decided to take half my thyroid gland out and have a look at it. Came back all clear in the end, benign adenoma. BTW what did you have done?

They tell you that there isn't a lot of pain and paracetamol will be fine. The surgical incision and area of the operation was sore but not too bad. I had quite a lot of muscular pain from the position they put you in for the operation. They gave me codeine to take home, and that knocked it on the head. There was no permanent damage to my vocal nerves (a risk of this surgery) but it took about 3 months for me to get my vocal range back when singing.
I've got a scar across my throat which sits in a natural skin fold so isn't too obvious, but does have perpendicular lines crossing it from the stitches. Looked like Frankenstein's monster when it was fresh.

The one you don't want cancelled at the last minute is a colonoscopy. Mainly due to the preparation you have to do before you go.
Yes, had one of those before. The prep is unpleasant. The actual procedure was fine, because they sedated the hell out of me. I have no recollection of the period between the drugs going in and waking up in the room.I had previously had the camera down the other end for gastroscopy.
I had to drive myself home afterwards, so declined the sedation.
Do not decline the sedation.

The camera down the penis was the worst.

I would definitely not want to remember that one.The camera down the penis was the worst.
I did get a surprise one actually, when I went to see the consultant to discuss the thyroid biopsies and he stuck a camera up my nose.

There were 1,624 fatalities on Britain's roads in 2023. That's less than 3.7% of US road deaths. Most of us get in our cars almost daily, and think nothing of it, yet for a lot of us , it's probably the most dangerous thing we'll ever do. Drive safe everyone!
In Britain, more people die from accidental poisoning than road accidents.

The prep was not nice though. You think it isn't working and then it doesn't stop. Luckily we have four toilets in our house.otolith said:

I've had bum, mouth and nose cams. Nose was the worst, especially as I caught a glimpse of the length of it before it went it.
Hopefully they gave it a courtesy wash in between.I wouldn't want a colonoscopy after it's been down somebody's throat!

You were out for the procedure? I wish I was, there were a couple of bits that made me wince. The first was when he lubed up and told me he'd just use some (not one) fingers first. Then, after a few gulps of gas and air along the way, when he said they were in as far as necessary (with the scope, not the fingers!) I asked how far in it was and he said about a metre. A metre!!! Anyway, I'm sure the pretty young students enjoyed seeing a middle aged man's hairy hoop being violated a lot more than I did the experience.
But yes, the prep, oh my sweet jesus...
I was wincing a bit during my procedure and the chap in charge of the camera said "It could be worse. You could have my job" But yes, the prep, oh my sweet jesus...

The prep was something else. You do wonder where it`s all coming from
