Proper bike racer - from an era when they ALL took on the roads
These guys never get the credit they should , a truly special breed of riders that I hold in high esteem from the road racing side , I just can’t compute the speeds they carried and the dangers when it went wrong..

The point I was making was that in his era, they ALL raced on open roads - it was normal. It was only in the 70s that track racing and road racing diverged.

Very worthy of a mention on PH , Sadly Dave Brodie top club racer and national saloon builder has died.

Most famous for his Run Baby Run Ford escort .
RIP Dave one of my heroes when I was a teenager.

There was an interview with him in a very recent edition of Octane mag.

And he gave no indication of slowing down so perhaps the death was sudden.

And in other news I see there's an obituary in the Telegraph for TV's Duncan Norvelle of "Chase me" fame in the 80s. I thought he died years ago.

Rik van Looy

One of the greats of cycling and dominant in the late 50's and early 60's. He was twice world champion, 39 Grant tour stages and the first man to win all 5 Monuments. notably a clean rider and relied on strength and that Flandrian ability to suffer.

I was lucky enough to meet Dave a couple of times. First time, I was at work at Gatwick Airport, I used to work for a freight forwarder, and we looked after an airfreight consignment from the Far East for him. He was supposed to wait to be contacted, but he was sitting on our doorstep when we arrived wanting to take it back to Brackley!
Anyway, we got it cleared and he said if ever I wanted to pop us to see his factory, I was more than welcome. Ended up going there with a friend who was a fast ford nut ( we went in his 2 door Cossie which I drove back, something of an upgrade from the 1.3 Escort I was driving at the time!)

When we were there, I got taken for spin down the bypass in one of his customers cars, first time I ever went over 150 Mph.
Him and Ken were chalk and cheese, but both entirely suited to their side of the business.

Very important player in modern football history because he was the guy who broke the old fixed wages system and paved the way for modern footballers to earn high wages - for good or ill.

This could be an old wives tale but I think INXS were convinced to invest into the film as a tax write off and no Australian film could ever make money. Michael Hutchence ended up putting money into it, what could go wrong. The budget for the movie was $8.8 million, and it pulled in US$328 million at the box office.
