Surely a simple cut out in the stairs would allow the TV to be more central?
For anyone seeking clarity as to whether they are council, step out your front door and see if you have hand painted your house number on either the brickwork of your house, or wheelie bin. Bonus points if the paint ran down the wall/bin a bit, or didn't quite fit and so had to be squashed up.

My favourite (which my housing association neighbour did) is emulsion with a 4 inch brush to paint your house number on the wall
