Isle of Wight update.

We're right at the bottom of the island, we pick up French radio and can see France on a clear night.

Its a bit wild here at the moment.
France is over the horizon, Shirley?
Call it 100km from Ventnor to Gatteville-le-Phare, so you'd need to be ~100m above sea level for the visible horizon to be at that distance. The high ground behind Ventnor goes up over 200m, so in theory on a clear night you should be able to see the French lights from the Ventnor Downs or some of the other high ground in that area.

Doing a quick Google the horizon at 100m seems to be much less than 100km?

We all just got the government red weather alert through on our phones - first time I've had that!
I turned that off the moment it was announced, I mean, why do we need it? We don't live near a volcano, we aren't on a major fault line, there is little risk of a tidal wave, really it is just there to tell us what the weather is going to do and we can check that by either looking outside or at the forecast, or that WW3 has broken out, and if that is happening it wouldn't bear any relevance to me as it's not like I am going to take up arms for this country.

St Boniface Down above Ventnor is 240mtrs.

The spot where I often see the orange glow in the sky is near St Catherines at 178mtrs. 57 nautical miles from the big nuclear powerstation, so I reckon thats what the loom is.

OK - despite my dodgy maths, if what you're seeing is sky glow from ground lights reflecting off the cloud base that makes more sense....

My brother was parked-up in Knowle, Solihull, to take his dog for a walk when this fell in front of his car, missing it by maybe 18" (car since reversed back a bit).

Fabulous rolleyes Instead of overnight snow it warmed to plus one and rained all night , now back into minus temps and everything is covered in a blanket of ice . Sun appearing from Wednesday onwards but until then it's fairly treacherous .

To much white in the sky there.

Snow today in CO. From half to 2 inches depending on location. Enough to make the drive slow is all. Probably cost me ten minutes on a twenty mile drive.

A week or to of -5 to freezing, stepping outside last night into the wind, it felt like walking into a hairdryer!

Had to go and dump the winter jackets pretty quickly.

Our winter yoyo continues , from plus temps on Sunday to waking up this morning at -29C , never mind the wind chill on top . Just to add to the fun we're getting another foot of snow today starting mid morning .
