Every UK high street now consists of the same things -

Bookies
Charity shops
Takeaways
Betting Shops
Newsagents
Not every...
That plus barbers and estate agents is ours entirely.

For me Bradford remains the one city that needs to go, the lawless and aggressive attitude of many of the citizens is now spreading to nearby towns and cities.
Agreed, other towns mentioned, means you haven't been to Bradford, the only other place that equals it is Middlesborough

On my one and only visit to Middlesborough, it reminded me of Grangemouth without the scenery.

Most towns and cities along the south coast are generally ok.
Newhaven!

Portsmouth!

To add to the south coast list of woe:

Hove
Wick (Littlehampton)
Bognor (centre not the better parts to the west and east)
Selsey (will hopefully flood one day and sink)
Havant.

A lot of money has been spent in Middlesbrough in recent years and it has improved. There are some grim towns in the south Wales valleys but my nomination is Luton.

Havant always looked pretty nice to me when I drove through on route to Goodwood.

I don't think Slough has been mentioned for a while, so i'll mention it - Slough.

A bit like Mos Eisley but with a trading estate rather than a spaceport.

A wretched hive of scum and villainy

After the Good Friday Agreement, I'd rather hoped the IRA could have been tuped to become the paramilitary wing of an architectural consultancy. Wolverhampton ... boom! Kneecap the odd town planner pour encourager les autres ...

As a collective, the Black Country.

Mile upon mile of featureless grey despair.

Allegedly a group of towns (seven?), but they all merge into one unremitting barren landscape.

High points include grey peas, and your house not falling into an abandoned mine shaft.

Awful.

Agreed. I remember visiting a friend in Wolverhampton while we were at University, and it was the only time I've ever looked at the Welsh valleys in a positive light. Just an endless sea of featureless grey/beige.

Makes me glad I'm just down the road, not that we're much better, although we did finally knock down the UK's worst building, so things are on the up and up smile

The transporter bridge. Essential viewing whenever I’m within spitting distance.

Have we had New Ash Green yet? Private sector town planning experiment with all the abundant good taste of the 1970’s made flesh. In north Kent.

Anyone ever been to Skelmersdale? If not, don’t bother. I wasn’t even aware of it’s existence until reading about it in a book by Stuart Maconie, but as luck would have it I ended up pricing some work there recently so got to visit around a dozen different locations in the town.

It’s grim; not grim and dangerous like the worst parts of London, Brum or Manchester, but just depressing throughout the entire town. A 1960s-1970s architectural hell of ring roads, footbridges, underpasses, and council estates. Flat-roofed pubs and badly designed open spaces, with an absolutely dire shopping centre.

The whole place just seemed weighed down with hopelessness. It didn’t even feel particularly dangerous, as though the scallies just couldn’t be bothered, probably happier sitting at home drinking cheap lager and smoking weed.

If there is/was an original old Skelmersdale village I saw no sign of it, just a collection of council estates and a damp, leaky, badly designed, badly lit shopping centre (Concourse Shoping Centre) with a disasterously low occupancy of the units. I think the main “anchor” stores were Farmfoods and Argos. Other highlights I can remember were Poundland, The Pound Shop, Pound Bakery, and about a dozen charity shops.

Check out the Google Reviews on the place. Some classics. My favourite is;

“The place were dreams go to die.
This is why I spend most of my time here and why I dont want it to change.”

If anyone is familiar with the Scarfolk blog, then I’m sure Skelmersdale is twinned with Scarfolk.
Cider With Roadies? I think I might dig out my copy for a re-read.

My nomination is Grimsby, having been there a couple of times I'm starting to think Polaris was given the Chevaline upgrade with Grimsby in mind...

Alton

Surrounded by lovely countryside. It's a shame that the village itself is a sthole. Good for drinking though.
