Some bitter and twisted, leftie, socialist, envy-ridden, class warrior will be along in a minute to say Guildford.
That's me - Guildford & much of Surrey & Sussex, about as smug, white & superior as is possible but immeasurably preferable to every town/city thus mentioned, mostly in the grim North I note.

Every UK high street now consists of the same things -

Bookies
Charity shops
Takeaways
Betting Shops
Newsagents
Not every...
That plus barbers and estate agents is ours entirely.
Don't forget coffee shops!

My folks and brother live in some of the towns/villages in Guildford's suburbs. While there's nothing offensive about the town or the suburbs, they are just painfully, dismally, spirit-crushingly dull, and devoid of any character.

In fact, that whole Surrey/Hampshire border is full of small towns with very few redeeming features. Not worth erasing, but not worth visiting.

Alton

Surrounded by lovely countryside. It's a shame that the village itself is a sthole. Good for drinking though.
Used to work in the mags court there as a security officer. The kebab shop just along the road was excellent for southern fried chicken.

To add to the south coast list of woe:

Hove
Wick (Littlehampton)
Bognor (centre not the better parts to the west and east)
Selsey (will hopefully flood one day and sink)
Havant.
Hove???? You are kidding right?
Havant always looked pretty nice to me when I drove through on route to Goodwood.
Leigh Park..........

There are indeed many candidates in the wider black country, but brierley hill is particularly grim..

Vaguely suprised Bradford hasn't had a look in yet - or Coventry for that matter.

Both places surrounded by lovely countryside and nice villages (Warwickshire, Wharfedale) but the actual places themselves are feral. Only redeeming feature for Coventry is it's incredibly quick to escape from. And Bradford has the National Film and Photography museum.

Bradford and Wharfedale has been mentioned a few times. Bradford is ok in the suburbs (e.g. Baildon) but Otley, Menston, Burley, Ilkley are much nicer.

The transporter bridge. Essential viewing whenever I’m within spitting distance.
Ahhh, Newport: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eijc2tGe-zM (best song parody ever?)

Leigh Park at one time if not now the biggest council estate in the UK, a dreadful sprawling mass but I suspect heaven compared with some in more deprived parts of the country.

If I tell you I have lived also in Watford, Stevenage and a few other places.
Where in Watford? I’m afraid as someone who lives near Watford it is not deserving to be considered a crap town anymore. It’s definitely undergone a LOT of change in the past 2 decades and I’d have to say it’s a nice area now, look at Cassiobury etc, the old “slums” at West Watford are being bought up and done up now, I know that because I invested in one. The green spaces, proximity to the city (for business, not crime) and the recently redeveloped town centre make it a rather nice little town. The population admittedly has gone from stabbists and degenerates to professionals, the educated type. Still much prefer Rickmansworth though.
I disagree, Saturday night on the high street is still like a war zone, awful!

Certainly not as bad as it used to be. Dare say thatcher sold most of them off privately.
