disappointingly, I've only had one comment that wasn't complimentary...
"But the conservatives would then decide to only pay the homeless man £40 for doing the work even though they initially agreed £50 with him. They'd then make him work longer and get a lower pension at the end of it all, while at the same time maintaining their own high value pensions. They'd make a lot of noise about cutting welfare benefits but take so long for fear of upsetting the ones they share a bed with and in the end take very little off the scrounges. Welcome to reality."
Is your friend a public sector worker, per chance? "But the conservatives would then decide to only pay the homeless man £40 for doing the work even though they initially agreed £50 with him. More of a win... This is currently doing the rounds and labour folks on my FB are spitting feathers over this story:
The £50 lesson.
Recently, while I was working in the flower beds in the front garden, my neighbours stopped to chat as they returned home from walking their dog. During our friendly conversation, I asked their 12 year old daughter what she wanted to be when she grows up. She said she wanted to be Prime Minister one day. Both of her parents – Labour Party voters — were standing there, so I asked her:
"If you were Prime Minister what would be the first thing you would do?"
She replied, "I'd give food and houses to all the homeless people."
Her parents beamed with pride!
Wow, what a worthy goal!" I said. "But you don't have to wait until you're Prime Minister to do that!" I told her.
"What do you mean?" she replied.
So I told her: "You can come over to my house and mow the lawn, pull weeds, trim my hedge and I'll pay you £50. Then you can go down to the Town Centre, find a homeless man and can give him the £50 to buy food."
She thought that over for a few seconds, then she looked me straight in the eye and asked, "Why doesn't the homeless man come over and do the work and you can just pay him the £50?”
I said, "Welcome to the Conservative Party!" Her parents aren't speaking to me anymore.
I said, "Unfortunately the homeless man is likely to have a drug addicition and has been left homeless because of Government cuts to local government adult services, drug prevention and treatment schemes and out of work benefits. So by giving him the cash you will be contributing to his continuing cycle of drug dependency and descent towards a miserable death". The £50 lesson.

His own. Oh, hang on, thats not how it works....its someone elses fault, sorry. Labour? His childhood priest? Jimmy Saville!?
No, it's defintely the Tories fault he's a drug addict. Wait, he's been one for the last 10 years, can't have been the current lot. Labour were most excellent at funding his lifestyle. Must have been Maggies fault.Yes, Thatcher is definitely to blame here.

I'm talking to myself. It's all the crack. But anyway, point stands. It's his own fault he's a drug addict, so if he suffers a miserable death because the government won't support his lifestyle any more, then tough st frankly.
Well, that's certainly one point of view.
I presume by the same logic you would also deny state funded medical treatment to lung cancer suffers, those with alcohol related illness, anyone who is overweight, anyone who suffers an accident as a result of some leisure based activity, those with AIDS contracted as a result of higher risk lifestyle choices etc etc.

Drinking, smoking, unprotected bum sex, adrenaline sports etc. are all legal.
Drug abuse is not. You break the laws designed to protect you, you deal with the consequences on your own.
You have to draw the line somewhere and as far as I am concerned that is any ailments caused as a result of illegal passtimes.

you might draw it there, others will draw it in front of smoking or drinking ailments, and I wouldn't draw one based on behaviour at all. I would expect a state funded medical aid to provide aid to any citizen in need of medical assistance regardless of how they came to need it. If a law was broken along the way then leave that to the legal system to judge and deal with. But none of us are right or wrong, there are only winners and losers and the winner will be the loudest voice.Drug abuse is not. That's a nice idea in theory, but the fact is there's just not enough money being paid in to pay for it all. There are people who've paid in all their lives but can't get the treatment they now need.People have to start taking responsibility for themselves instead of relying entirely on others.
