Whilst everybody say's don't join it for what you get out of it, in my experience many do. You will get a great opportunity to network and you may get a leg up in your business/career. People like doing business with people they know and trust. It's a great upstanding organisation dedicated to charity - nuff said?
sounds great.....where do I sign?

what I'd get from it.
evasion from the self
an illusory sense of collective identity
the softening of one's sense of aloneness

I find a good single malt has the same effect.

Interesting when you're waaaaaaaay up the ladder.
how far up are you?
Personally, not very, they only wanted me in to be treasurer! So was stuck with that a few years, but studies etc mean i've not done anything for a while, just turn up, get my curry (best bit about my lodge) and enjoy myself without having to worry too much, suits me.

I plan on getting involved more when the kids move out and i'm stuck with the wife every evening.

I've been in since I was 21, now 29.

An arcane, misunderstood group, where you are approached on the quiet to see if you want to join, and if you do you will be viewed with suspicion by those around you?

Not sure it appeals.

Nope, just got my first 3 out of the way, then treasurer, enjoyed doing the wt for newbies (who were 20/30/40/50 years my senior) to keep me ticking over on remembering.

ETA Yes, very young, but it's a family history thing, my old man and grandad also consecrated my lodge as a new one in 2000, so nice to be part of it from the beginning, hence I was in as early as allowed.

I've just realised that his post there was deliberate, ironic and witty.

See, he's changed already.

That's what I was thinking, I don't want to be lying my way through the process!
