I seem to recall at a meeting a few months ago there was a communication from Grand Lodge read out along the lines of if the tracing board is not carried out, your initiation is invalid in the eyes of UGLE...
Think that was the 3rd degree TB, not the 1st. I remember a big discussion on some of the forums as no-one could remember seeing a 3rd without the TB being included.
It referred to the Third and it was the Trad History.
History of third degree according to the secretary of my lodge last night (sorry, just thought I'd slip that bit in) in our lodge the same man has been giving the history for 49 years now eek

I am doing it next month... Actually a really nice piece (if not long!) to learn.

Thanks for clarifying that - I must admit to occasionally "zoning out" and not listening as intently as I could whilst our secretary is reporting to the brethren...

Hmm, well this tread has been quiet for the past 3 months. I hope we have all been learning our words, and are ready for the next meeting. I know that a couple of us are prepping for the "big chair", and I for one am terrified. All my good plans for learning the book on the train to work have not started, and I now have 2 1/2 months to get ready for my installation.

Anyone have any wise words or advise, or memory tricks. I don't want to have to resort to the Generation Game tricks of sticking the words on the back of the props. Especially as our goat is not too tame, and will eat them part way through.

The amount that the installed WM has to learn isn't really too bad; just presenting PM jewel to IPM, installing the officers and closing in each degree. You will probably have heard it all a few times before, so you will find (hopefully!) that it sticks quite easily.

The main thing is not to worry too much; everyone is on your side. You will thoroughly enjoy your night and it will take a few days for the "high" to subside.

You should then have at least a month to learn the next ceremony!

Best of luck, not that you'll need it! (I enjoyed it so much that I went into the chair twice!)

Get a bloody good IPM :-P

All I can suggest is to remember that each office installed is very similar in terms of their job description to what is said in the opening. What you have to say is all pretty logical which makes it a bit easier. Oh, and go to LOI a lot!!!!

I am glad I am out of the Chair now as being IPM is stress free and so it's nice to have a relaxed year but going through the chair is a wonderful thing. Above all else enjoy it and remember you are there for a reason.

Both my Grandads were in the FreeMasons, and one would could back from the lodge driving his vandom plas whilst completely pissed, and the police never did a thing. I guess the 'protection' and back scratching will make all the psuodo religious crap worth while.

My uncle is a mason. He lives in Sevenoaks, Kent but is a member of a couple, he's quite senior I believe.

He takes it very seriously and has hinted that one day, I should join too.

He's got all sorts of uniforms, swords etc.

Could be in the KT's too from the sounds of it. I don't know too much about that, but from what my old mans told me, it sounds like a whole other world.

If KT is Knights Templar - then yep - he is!!
He's a carpenter/builder and runs his own business - he's not mentioned he has had business because he's a mason but I think I would be naive to think he hasnt.

He does OK - that's for sure BUT to be fair to him, he's not in it for that reason - he invests a lot of time and money into it and seems to really enjoy it.

My dad attends KT's in Nottingham somewhere, i've seem some of the regalia, he has a lot of stuff, some of it probably fairly expensive too.

To be fair, I doubt there is a great deal of additional business income to be made through masonry. If people were thinking of joining for profit, don't. You will be sussed out pretty quickly, and it would probably do you more harm than good. I'd say probably 95% of members i've met or know, are members more for the social side of it. Its rewarding, its a good opportunity to meet new people, have a few beers, and raise a bit of money for charity.
