I highly recommend the Razorock Bruce synthetic brush - way better than my expensive Simpson, Omega and EJ badger bushes.

FWIW, I've recently bought a couple of cheap razors; the new Wilkinson Sword Classic and the King C Gillette. The WS doesn't suit me, quite harsh (not aggressive) but have only shaved with it once (much prefer the old black plastic Classic). The King C is great, really enjoying it - a little more aggressive than a DE89 but nowhere near an R41 - somewhere about the Executive Shaving Braveheart.

If you want to buy from Trumper Brothers they also sell synthetic brushes. An overlooked item is a shaving brush stand, Trumpers sell one for £5.50, this allows the brush to drain free of water between shaves.

Mine was my most expensive item:

Lovely to use, and aesthetically, but the handle is so heavy it squirrels off the brush stand given half a chance smile

By the way.

It is refreshing to see so many posters having respect for the opinions and preferences of others without argument or contradiction.

RR Big Bruce is a fabulous brush. I much prefer it to any badger I've tried.

Morning guys, like a lot of others I hadn’t realised how bad a thing badger brushes are, been using a Proraso boar hair one for a few years now & it’s like the old laws & sausages adage I’m not sure I want to know how they’re made.

On the subject of bowls above, Giles Shaving has some reasonably priced offerings: click.
I don't have one yet, but they're quite popular on the wet shaving facebook group.

So after reading the thread and watching many YouTube videos (geofatboy) I have pulled the trigger and got:

Edwin Jagger DE89L
Personna platinum blades
Proraso Sensitive shaving shop
Proraso omega boar shaving brush
Proraso shaving mug

Sounds like it is the unofficial starter kit so will report back with how I get on.

Any recommendations for a razor stand for the bathroom and a razor case for travelling?

Cheers all.

Thank you thumbup

I did search for "wet shaving" on FB and loads of groups came up; so not sure which one was the key one

A decent selection, especially the EJ - I think you'll like that; good quality made in Sheffield. The boar brush wouldn't feature if it was me, but that's just personal preference.

I've been working through my recent variety pack of blades. The Voskhod ones are very good. The Bolzano ones are average, I decided 4 shaves was their limit. Silver Star ones are st, I daren't go more than two shaves. I've yet to try the others.

Agent shave has some nice brush stands at £5

https://agentshave.co.uk/shaving-brushes/brush-sta...

To get their minimum order I would also look at Cella shaving cream and some blades.

Bristle brushes are not the first choice for many new shavers, personally I prefer a synthetic brush such as the one from Body Shop at £8, Agent shave has some cool looking brushes starting around £15

Just had a skim read through this big shave thread

Surely a blade that’s good for one guy is not good for another. I have a tough hard stubble but some guys have that soft bum fluff stubble.
I have always stuck with Gillette, tried all the fusion blades which tend to pull on my stubble rather than smoothly shave over it. I always revert back to the old Sensor Excel blades, they do not pull on my stubble, just do a fairly smooth and pretty close shave.

Was going to try the heated Gillette shaver but it’s a bit of a gimmick, apparently

I have seen a big difference in opinion on what makes a good blade. Some are great, others are average I have only known one terrible blade and that was a Gillette 7 o'clock Permasharp Green. a blade that I had to change half way through the first shave. Hard to understand what with standardisation in manufactuiring machinery.

Wilkinson blades, for example, are ok but mild, Feather are super sharp, Sainsbury's own make are pretty good, Merkur are average but last well.

I understand that the requirements for blades and razors for men of colour are different again, could anyone comment?

Well I finally got round to using my new shaving kit (was growing a few days worth of fluff for a proper test) and wow!

At first I didn’t think it was working as I felt I was just sliding the razor across the shaving cream but once I took a closer look it was just working without any tugs or pulls just that satisfying sound of hair being cut when passing the blade across it.

I am definitely not going back to the old multi blade cartridge razors now.

The Edwin Jagger DE89L looks great with the shiny chrome as well.

Also the Proraso shaving cream was great and leaves a nice fresh smell with no irritation at all.

Thumbs up from me! thumbup
