Just ordered a sample set of AstraSP to try now that I've finished my free Derby that came with the blade.

It's a minefield of opinions on blades! Not helped by my appallingly poor coverage on the side of my face, but a particularly stiff stubble on my muzzle area.

Have to say the Harry's seem to last fa more than any other brand I have ever tried, I dont shave every day, praps every 4 days, but one blade can last several months.

Tried Harry's. Ghastly experience and straight in the bin after a few uses. Back to Gillette for me. Smooth and no ingrowing hairs.

Absolutely

New blade on and talk about tug and pull on my stubble. Waste of money.

I could suggest 3 or 4 others who had no issues with Harr's quite honestly, I dont grow days worth of stubble so might be me, but I also shave against the grain, something I have always done, I found their blades stayed sharper for far, far longer than anything the mercenaries at Gillette ever make, which was their point in the pitch!

Never got on with Wilkinson, always cut me to ribbons

I've been using the Astra Platinums in my father's old Gilette razor. They're pretty good.

Although I've got 100 of the things, so they're going to last a while, especially whilst in lockdown!!! My nephew ordered 1,000 and gave me 100, think his will last him a few years...

Just ordered some more soap from here https://www.theenglishshavingcompany.com again these seem to last ages as well smile Had the D R Harris refills before, but have gone with https://www.theenglishshavingcompany.com/arran-loc... which is made in Scotland. So will see.

Attempting a beard at the moment and just thirteen days since my last shave and I'm missing it already.

I'd only recently discovered the wonders of D R Harris Skin Tonic and Thayers Witch-hazel. Still use it on my shiny bonce though. biggrin

Like many others here I discovered DE razors a few years ago and haven't looked back to cartridge blades since. Much more comfortable shave with a better result. I particuarly think the Monday morning shave is much smoother. A couple of days growth and multiple blades really snag. I've settled on Astra platinum blades (good balance of sharpness and price) and Taylor of Old Bond Street Sandalwood shaving cream.

I also shave with a Shavette straight blade sometimes- DE blade snapped in half. I'm interested to know if the bloody expensive 'proper' cut throat razors are appreciably better?

I've DE shaved for years, and, along the way, became a fairly significant collector of vintage Gillette razors - the Slim, Fatboy and Tech. Also brushes - a big collection of those too! I shave with 1940's Gillette Tech every day and I am not sure there's a better shave out there.

I have often wondered about a cut throat, but then think 'quit while you're ahead'.

Is your tech aluminium or brass/steel? I have one of the UK made razors from the early 60's but it's aluminium.
I'd like to try a heavier one, whether they're plated brass or some other metal I don't know.

I have quite a few in both.....

I'll send you a steel one to try out if you like. PM me and I can post it. Keep it for a month and return.

Kind offer, but I'm between shaves at the moment.
Probably won't be shaving again this year, apart from my dome, on which I use a HeadBlade Moto.
Are they US made or were they also manufactured over here?

I suspect that steel Tech's were made in the UK (and the US of course) - there were many, many different handle designs and presentations.... from plastic travel boxes (quite rare, I have a couple), to bakelite, to simple blister packs. The aluminium ones were a bit poor to be honest, steel is a better weight/heft.

Every shave is different for every face, but the Tech gives me the perfect shave - it's an ideal size for a razor and it is the perfect gap.

There's an interesting timeline here for them:

Bought a cheap chinese synthetic brush (Yaqi Tuxedo) and am a convert vs my semogue boar brush

Much easier/ faster to build up lather on my face. Holds & creates much more lather.

I do miss the face feel - the synthetic is soft on my face, and I like the scritching effect of the boar brush.

Synthetic brushes have come a long way, they work well and are easy to dry between shaves.

I know what you mean about boar brushes, I have one that is 40 years old but still gets used for really working the soap into the back of my neck and into the hairline,

Wilko are selling a good synthetic brush for £2, the only down side is that the handle is boring grey plastic but it can be really improved with a light spray of aerosol paint after you have masked up the brush part

I'm going to have to read all 298 pages on this thread. Multi blade razors were a bit of a waste of time for me. I found that they'd clog up and become inefficient. I went back to a DE razor but swapped it for a shavette shortly after. I like the VOSKHOD blades. They only last a couple of shaves but i get them for about $14 / 100 and i break them in half. I still keep a 3 blade razor in my travel kit. The TSA does not seem to appreciate a straight razor or a DE razor for that matter.

It takes a little longer to shave with a shavette but it's a nice ritual.

Anyone got any suggestions for blades to go with this Markhor cut throat razor?.

It's part of secret santa at work. Our budget is £10 and this is what my person has requested. Whilst I know i've already reached the limit I fancy getting some blades Or something to go with it (nothing more than maybe £5). So I'm thinking some blades.

Any suggestions for blades? or maybe someething else that's £5 that I could chuck into it? My initial thought is the 100pack of derby blades.

sidenote, if any of you know of a better looking/functioning cut throat razor then that one, and is £10 or under, i'm all ears

Whilst I enjoyed my EJ DE87, I found I sometimes slipped when the handle was wet. Thus as an early Xmas present to myself I have bought this EJ 3D Laser Diamond with the chequered handle just over a week ago. It's much better and with the Feather blade, it's a very good shave. So far I haven't cut myself with this combination (only 5 shaves so far) after just over a year of DE shaving with the DE87.

I'll tuck away the year-old DE87 for back-up duties.

Just about the best choice first DE razor, and a benchmark for most others tbh.
