Go the blades route to start.
Agreed. I defy any stubble to survive a max of two passes with a Feather!

Come on, this is PH!
Buy a straight razor, learn how to use it (plenty of vids on Youtube) and you'll never look back...

You won't need to, your head will be missing.

Executive shaving braveheart - excellent close shave.
If that's not close enough for you, try R41 - big balls required.

So three months into the EJ http://amzn.eu/d/7T76RQ3 and i dont like it.

Currently using either Gillette blue or Astra blades but i dont seem to have a nice clean shave without multiple passes.

Also, anyone understand the Merkur ratings?
I bought one of these recently

Very good razor - should get you close enough. Also try some Feather blades.

Tried that a few years back. All going well until a slip resulted in a 2 inch slice down my cheek.

Never again!

Just bought some Kai blades from Connaught Shaving.
£6.30 inc p&p for 10.
These are supposed to be even sharper than Feathers.

Is there a 'starters' or 'newbies' kit that would be recommended? I've decided I'm going to try going down this route thumbup
I bought a plastic Wilkinson Sword DE razor and some blades from boots. Be careful though before you know it you’ll have a nice Merkur, stand, brushes, dish and enough soap and stuff to start your own shop

I've been trying some UK artisan shaving soaps.
I have to say, so far I've been extremely lucky.
I've tried
Obsessive Soap Perfectionist Barbershop & also their Orange & Patchouli
Phoenix & Beau Sanskrit & also Trafalgar.
These are giving me the best DE shaves I've had. All the soaps are tallow-based, they're all really slick and they leave my face feeling very soft after the shave in comparison to mass production creams & soaps.
I highly recommend putting some of these soaps on your Christmas lists if you're struggling for ideas.
All are about £15 delivered, from places like Connaught Shaving or The English Shaving Company.

Tried Personna Platinums for the first time yesterday morning, I think they have surpassed Feather as my favourite in my limited experience. I got a closer shave with more of it gone on the first pass WTG. Won't be repeat buying Bluebeards or Astra.

IIRC I sold you my stockpile when I decided that Feathers was my blade of choice, didn't I? nerd

Heads up for anyone who wants a decent DE razor at a cheap price.
Search for Baili BR171 razor on ebay & you can pick up a really decent Gillette Tech clone for £7.99 delivered.
I tried it this morning & it gives a very pleasant, close shave. thumbup

I have a fat handled made in Canada Tech.
Great razor & a bit more aggressive than your normal Tech.
Very nice - is this pre-war? What box did it come in?

Sorry for old bump, I didn't spot your post previously.... I have many Tech razors and find them my 'go-to' razors.

I got it in a bakelite box - not sure if that's original.

The made in Canada 1932 patent Techs with the triangular slots (like mine) were apparently made from 1939-45.

Very nice - thanks for those pics.

I think I may have one in my collection, I will have a check - I am basing that suspicion on the handle design.

The Tech really was such a great razor (still is), it was not at all expensive to produce and sold in vast numbers. The bakelite box is almost certainly genuine and there were quite a few different box designs. I have a few in white, white and blue, red and black plastic boxes too - almost like travel cases. Very neat.

If I were to pick up one of these:

What should I budget for getting properly sorted and "shave ready"? Assume I'd then need a strop?

If you're looking at a vintage one they can be quite inexpensive £30-50. Lots on eBay and there are forums.

You would need a strop, but you could most likely make do for a while. People use newspaper, for example.

The learning curve is steep, but it's not particularly difficult.

Hi guys

I need some help.

Was burgled earlier today with 2 cars stolen and have some (bad) CCTV. Would any trainer experts be able to help try to ID the trainers they are wearing.

It won't be easy but I suspect some of you guys will know.

It would help as I have a couple of names for suspects

Would need to pm the footage I don't won't to show this in the wider forum yet.

Thanks in advance
