One thing I've never really done is drink on my own - maybe 5/6 times a year I might have one beer or a whisky at home on my own.
Something a bit sad I've always felt about people drinking on their own at home -
Funny thing is I'm an at home drinker; get home before the wife, put dinner on and crack open a cider, have another when eating and then when the wife is farting about in the kichen cleaning up and catching up with e-mails, WhatsApps and texts, I will have another whilst watching the TV or on my X-Box, all the while she is having a cup of tea!Something a bit sad I've always felt about people drinking on their own at home -
I'm not a going to the pub or a club and drinking loads kind of person; TBH I rarely visit the pub and never go to bars or clubs, if we go out for a meal with friends, I will only have a couple, if I am at a gig or festival, I rarely drink, if I offer to drive, it doesn't bother me that I may be missing out on a drink
I think my drinking is a boredom/habit thing.
Anyway I am starting day 16, occasionally I will think "wouldn't mind a nice cold cider" but I am finding is surprisingly easy and generally feeling that I'm not missing it, there is booze in the house but I'm not tempted, instead of sitting infront of the TV when the wife is in the kitchen, I will take one of our dogs out for a walk, get back and have either a coffee or green tea.
My sleep is fantastic, I have lost over half a stone, I did have headaches in the evening but they have now stopped, I wake up with a clear head.
I am not looking at a long term goal of coming off permanently, I just want to see how it pans out.
Good work on the weight loss! That's amazing..
Headaches, you may just be taking in more liquids?
When I was getting checked over (I've given up alcohol because of medication - not choice) I did mention headaches as I was getting quite a few.
My doctor asked how much water I was drinking each day. I estimated about 1.5 litres, unless I'm out running or on a longer walk, plus teas, coffees.
She immediately said I want you to be drinking 3 litres a day.
Now bear in mind the temperature where I live is always between 27-31C in the daytime.
Well, okay....seemed like a lot...but no more headaches! Not had one in 8 months. Took my body a while to adjust - I was certainly pissing a lot more to start with that's for sure but I seem to have adapted now and not a single headache.
My advice for everyone - drink more water.

Watched this the other day

May be of some interest to some on here.
I had recorded this when it was on in the summer. Watched it last night. Wow, it was like watching myself, all the things he said about using it to deal with anxiety and depression, not understanding why we drink or have to drink, the excuses we use to justify and excuse our drinking. I've never been so impacted by a TV programme in my life. Really made my think about my relationship with alcohol. https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0bhkc8b/dri...

Whilst I am here at the min aiming for the year off I wonder now if I need to never drink again. I know I can't moderate. The look on the professors face when Adrian told him how much he had been drinking was shocking. For a while, especially in December, I have been drinking more than he has. I was clocking 140+ units a week.
I actually feel like writing Adrian a letter thanking him for that show.

Brilliant show it really changed my opinion too. I didn’t have a clue how bad it really is for us until recently. Christ that was close!
Never wanted a drink so much as the last hour.
I’m on day 19 and been going well, but since 4pm the desire to get drunk was huge. Ran to shop and bought 4 bottles of Becks Blue. Downed one and feeling better. Got film on and dinner in oven.

I find an alco-free beer does take the edge off.
I'm enjoying these Freedamm 0.0% at the moment.
4.5 years off for me now.
I'm doing dry January but have been leaning very heavily on the becks blue etc. Easily done over 30 bottles since Jan 1st. I didn't think much of it until my wife complained I was knocking them back too much. She's never said a word when it's proper beer!
I really like the taste of becks blue and a dash of lemonade.
Does anyone think this is odd? I think it's ok and it feels weird to be questioning my levels of non alco consumption. Not even tempted for a proper beer!

I just passed 2 years without a single drink on NYE 2018 after nearly 20 years of binge drinking (job restraints gave short windows in which to drink) Over that time I only very nearly cracked one time at a house party in November with around 30 toddlers running riot and all the parents were mainlining red wine and spirits in order to cope.
I did have a shot of sake after an epic sushi meal with friends the other day and tbh it was really nice and felt a lot more special than it probably was due to not having a drink for so long, but that was that and straight back to nothing with absolutly no craving for any more.

Keep going , your body & mind does a reset & then being alcohol free quickly becomes the new default setting . It's great waking up every day not feeling like st ! And stick the booze money in your piggy bank and watch it grow fast . It's all good .
I didn’t have a drink last night and I woke up feeling like st this morning!Just back from a week in Lanzarote.
Offered a glass of cava on my arrival, a bottle of wine in my room and a voucher for free cocktails.
Happily declined the cava and won 'friends' with the wine and voucher.
I scoffed the chocolates though.
A great week made all the better for no alcohol. More rejuvenated than I've felt in many years - slept like a log and up with the sunrise.
Left my darn phone there though so don't have my app to count the days, but I think it was 9 September I quit so roughly 134 days.

21 days today. Have surprised myself!
Struggling to see a reason to start again after January at the moment.
Same here, I'm finding it really easy which is odd as I started dry January last year and only made it 10 days, this year I'm not finding it hard at all; I've made meals which need wine and I've not even thought of having a sneaky sip, people have bought me booze, I've just put it away. Struggling to see a reason to start again after January at the moment.
Even the wife said she'd thought I may have a cider after being bought some, I'm just not that bothered.
My weight is still going down, I have more energy, I'm sleeping better, I'm not dropping off at 21:30 in front of the telly, I'm waking up fresh, I'm no longer snoring, why would I start up again!

I 'have' to stop drinking this year. In the past I have found drinking non alcohol beer to be quite chemically and gives me a headache. I've had better luck with low content beers in region of 0.5%. Is this a slipperly slope however?
It was for me, I started back on Alkohol Frei (0.5%) Erdinger and Super Bock 0.5% Stout which kept me going for a few months towards the end of when i last stopped drinking but in the end, I convinced myself that having the 3.6% and then 4% lagers was ok. Wasn't long before I was back drinking premium strength stuff and spirits. You may have more self control than me though (so i now don't have anything, even the Heineken 0.0% for fear that i'll get a taste for beer again)
