I’ve felt really crap off and on for 3 months or so, and after a bit of a meltdown this morning decided to refer myself for counselling. My work EAP actually offered me a telephone counselling session then and there which I took advantage of. I think I would prefer a few sessions asI’d prefer a longer term fix. The GP used to be able to refer for CBT though there’s a wait. I’d rather not try pills as to me this is exogenous depression ie down to me not tolerating current circumstances and probably overdoing it.

It’s standard procedure to have an initial consultation for an hour over the phone to access where your at prior to recommending CBT. You can then choose a therapist and start sessions when your healthcare have approved it.
My advice on pills is to use them when you have some time off so your body can adjust to them as initially they do have side effects.

The service offered by the EAP seems to be a call us when you need us thing, 24/7. Which is fine, actually probably what a lot if people need, but wouldn’t offer continuity. I might call them again and ask if they do longer term referrals. You can then choose a therapist and start sessions when your healthcare have approved it.

I have been round the block a few times, I had depression even as a kid. Looking back I would say it’s at least partly down to PTSD from being beaten up a lot as a kid. I didn’t get to grips with it until I got very ill in my 20s - although I had asked for help a few times before then. I’ve been on pills a few years (many moons ago), tried supplements, SAD lights, CBT, EMDR, psychotherapy, mindfulness and a few other things. Some things helped more than others. Which reminds me that a couple of things like mindfulness which had really helped i have allowed to lapse, so there are a couple of things I could start back with.
Having been down this road a few times I can spot the markers along the way to becoming ill. Ideally I wouldn’t be posting this on the internet but right now I genuinely feel like I am on my own with this one

Sometimes it’s easier because they won’t care too much and then go off on one if you let on how low you are. The people in your life have all sorts of vested interests.
I am not ashamed to say at my lowest point I used to phone Samaritans. They are always there 24/7 and it’s totally confidential.

It sounds like you are dealing with a whole heap of st right now. It’s good that you are reaching out
Tell me about it. It's ridiculous that u have to go on a forum to get a response from someone that cares You need to be firm with the GP surgery and get seen, but even if they give you pills it is a slow change.
You have a lot on your plate at the moment but don't give in to the temptation to self harm again, it only hurts you and will solve nothing. Can you get away from your troubles for a while?
