Exactly why they introduced the different classes. The popularity was waning and as a result the big money supplement industry was too. The classic physique is far more attainable and at least conceivable. GH/Insulin is simply dangerous and not a pretty sight.
But those guys are taking all the same stuff, surely? Just a bit less or for less time.

No they aren't. Not by a long shot or at least in very small doses. Drugs such as anadrol, oxandrin, dianabol, winstrol, deca-durabolin have been around for many decades. The classic guys will mostly be using these 'classic drugs'. Growth Hormone and Insulin came about mid 80's and arrived on the muscle scene early 90's.

The bubble gut mentioned by Chris is distention on the abdomen. GH causes everything to grow. Brain, heart, intestines. It is NOT the masses of food being eaten or a hernia. It is your guts pressing up against the abdomen. Just like a pregnant woman. Most of these guys will have hernia's also, caused by the guts pressing up against the belly button.

To add also. Most drugs are not pure and made in varying degrees of complexity. The Kuwait boys are so big because the billionaire arab who backs them has all their gear made to pharma standards. So there is gear and there is GEAR!

Don't kid yourself that the classic guys aren't using the same as the open. Some of the doses will be lower, but the protocols will be very similar.

They have a weight class, so diet limits their size.

You are probably right. I'm no expert biggrin The link I posted is a 6ft 1 (tall guy) coming in at 102kg. He looks 250lbs. Drugs or not he looks fantastic in my opinion.

Right, update from me. Saturday's sportive went really well, felt so strong, probably the best I've felt all year. The ride finished deep into the night. Up first thing next day for a 60km recovery, then to the gym in the evening. Felt super strong but no pump. Weird. Then tonight recover ride with my wife, then 130 pull ups and 260 press ups. So the plan between now and Christmas is to add 1kg more of muscle. 82kg and ripped would be great. Upping the calories but taking out the snacks. Let battle commence. biggrin

Present condition below.

Was still feeling stuff from Fridays Squat and Deadlift session, so just had a gentle ish session, my bench is definitely improving, 80 kilos was a struggle but now its kind of normal.

But my main progress is running, not something I have done in ages but I did a mile, without stopping and could have carried on, not out of breath. Now not saying I am Mo Farah here but it is nice to be able to run, I dont think I am every going to be a "runner" but I think I should be able to run a mile happily, going to use it as my warm up instead of cocking about on the cross trainer.

Today's lunchtime session was 10x10 squats at 80kg (just under bodyweight). Saw another YouTube clip of Mark Rippetoe talking about squatting and tried to apply his technique. My hamstrings and back ache like the devil. Tonight I shall mostly be having nightmares about staircases.

Mr Rippetoe would certainly say dont do 10 x 10 squats! He's all about low total rep numbers, especially for "older lifters".

Well I'm not quite 40, although I most certainly feel it right now, not sure if that classes me as an older lifter. Re 10x10 squats, that idea came from Bobby Maximus.

I have seen 30 given as the age at which one becomes an "older lifter" (although 40 is more common)! My best guess is that differences between person A and person B of the same age are huge, so that general rules for any age range are pretty much useless - much better to just see what works for you personally.

Chris does massive volume for an "older lifter" and does great with it; some people much younger than him would see crappy results with so much volume.

30! Whoever said that is clueless. I'm not as old as our resident 'old man lifter', hi Chris biggrin but am doing just as much as I was in my late 20's. Only difference is I am prone to a few more twinges and i'm not as heavy (I choose not to be).

I've really been enjoying my riding to the detriment of weights and have lost some of the gains I had made which pisses me right off.

Not sure I have the balls to post a pic of present condition on here as I'm definitely on the athletic side compared to most here.

30k killer hill climb on the virtual bike today in Dubai gym where the air con is a bit asthmatic, I dont think I have ever sweated so much.

5k row and 15k hill climb yesterday quite jet lagged. Heart rate was all over the place.

I have a proper ride on a proper bike round Nad Al Sheba booked tomorrow evening with a mate who did rather well on Ironman this year in SA. Going to push hard as no doubt he'll bring out the TT bike.

Need some incentive to hit weights again. Maybe a training partner might be an idea.

It is much easier to regain muscle than to build it the first time, Jonty. That's motivation enough, surely? You'll make gains even faster than a newbie.

Well if that's true I'm going out for a beer in the nighttime 33 degree heat and celebrating! I didn't know that. Cheers to you!

I could say that you're just behind me, but you could retort that I'll always be older than you, so I won't bother... hehe

Went swimming tonight, with the wife, first time in a pool for a couple of decades. Loved it, swam myself almost to exhaustion. Starving now....

Swimming is awesome. Always surprises me that so many Brits don’t know how. And don’t worry about a retort Chris. I know your kids are late teens. My just turned 3yo (seemed a good idea at the time) at bed time decided to wee all over the bed in my home office. On asking him why he did that, he replied, I wanted to watch Paw Patrol.

The bed I had a cheekie old man kip on when no ones watching hehe

This morning I do not. I have the DOMS. All of them. I almost had to ask for help getting down the stairs at Baker Street tube station earlier.

150 bodyweight dips last night, 100 of which was in 4 sets (30,20,30,20) then tacked on some weighted dips at the end for 4 sets up to +30kg.

4 sets of 10 neutral grip chins and 20 strict toes to bar to finish.
