On the 40s, that is as heavy as it gets in my gym. I'm not a big fan of just adding volume. For me, nothing beats going heavier to stress the fibres and build strength. I could manage 45s. When I was younger i could do 55s but i wouldn't even try, now. My back is a bit dodgy. There is a big difference between being physically strong enough to move the weight and being able to properly control Dbs that big. They are big, wide and not easy to handle. I tried some bent over raises earlier this week. One set and suffered back pain for several days (the wrong type of pain). There are several excellent exercises I have to stay well clear of. smile
Heavy dumbbell presses are a bit difficult in terms of set-up, too. Anything that I can safely get to my chest, I can press for 5 or more reps.

It's not so easy training heavy on your own. I might look at using one of the PTs for a while. Someone who can 'encourage' that extra rep or two.

I've stopped seated DB shoulder press because whilst i can handle the weight 30kg per, swinging them into position gives my back a right kicking and i suspect that is how i injured my forearm and shoulder.

Strength Day>

Sets x reps

Squat: 2x1x 260kg
Bench: 2x1x 177.5kg
Dead: 1x 290kg- strap snapped whilst locking out, not happy biggrin

Supposed to be 2 singles on the dead, but after the first fk up/tantrum, I retired for the day. Pretty fatigued at the moment, cutting back weekend training and upping calories I think, as the next 3 weeks are getting into PB heavy territory.

Otherwise decent.

Were you just pissed that it screwed the set or did it tt you when it gave way? I've had to update my favourites list again in Safari smile

Still not managed to get in the gym, been stressing about this job offer I've been offered, and tied up with that.

Had a nice little home workout this AM - Push Ups, standing DB press, curls.

Trying to get back to that 250 Push ups a day thing. Enjoying it!

Final name now biggrin

Fortunately it didn't make me tear something- mostly pissed because it felt heavier than i'd of liked, and it was right before I locked it out- I've not failed a lift in a very long time, and this was going up too. I hooked gripped the warm ups, but wasn't convinced it'd be good for 290, so went to straps.
TBH, a second single would have been a struggle anyway, plus I was out of time. The squats (and the week so far) took a fair bit out of me.

Lunchtime session:

Overhead Press 4x15 Still trying to make all 4 sets at 40kg; my pressing strength is taking a long time to bring up. Today I made my 2nd and 3rd sets rest-pause to hit the full 15 and for my last set I added in some push presses once I hit failure. 60 reps total with the weight today.
Lateral Raise 4x15
Dips 4x12
Overhead Rope Extension 3x30. Sore elbow this week, and this is one of the exercises that really seems to help me recover.

missed that you use chains, Chris. I assume the idea is, on the lowest point, minimal weight added but as you push up, you are dragging more chain and adding weight?

I'm about to get off my ass and hit back/biceps. I did just lie down in my office and rip out a few ab sets. biggrin

Yes, not so sure how advantageous they are for Squats (as the lowest point, when starting to push back up is the hardest), but they definitely are for Bench Press, as my sticking point for heavier weight is the final push to lock out at the top. When I didn't use chains for trying a new PR, the weight went up easier than I dared think!

Good luck with your back/biceps stuff! smile

Nah - 3 days with barely any sleep probably caused the migraine that kicked in as I started the workout. Nearly puked / passed out about 5 times. Almost hardcore like Chris and DD...kinda.

perhaps I have been a little naïve, but I didn't realise until today that there are people on YT and IG that actually use 'fake weights' when filming their exercises!

Brad Castleberry:

And woman, too!

Look how she squats over 330lbs, but the bar is resting nicely on her shoulders with no problems, and for 10 reps! How do they get away with it?

Been trying a full body routine as opposed to a bro split. So hit every muscle group at least once a session three times this week.

Bench press - 60kgx10, 80kgx10 , 100kgx8
Squats - 80kgx10, 100kgx10 , 120kgx10
Shoulder press - 40kgx10' 60kgx10 , 70kgx6
Bent over rows- 40kgx10, 60kgx10, 70kgx10
Rack pulls - 100kgx10, 120kgx10, 140kgx10
Shrugs -3x10 @ 40kg
Bicep curls super set with tricep extensions
Leg curl 3x10 @ 70kg

Didn't eat much today and really struggled with the bench and squats , rack pulls felt easy and should of gone heavier.

That's a lot of work for a single session. Good stuff!

I did that thing today, like walking, but faster, "running" I believe it is called, actually quite enjoyed it, six laps of the 200 metre running track, not far by runners standard but probably more than I have done in 20 years biggrin

Squats, sixty kilos feeling easy now, just building up slow to avoid injuring myself, trying to get the form right but going to get some PT sessions to make sure. Deadlifts 80 kilos, 5 sets of 5, Bench press 5 * 80 kilos and then some fannying about as it a new gym and there are so many bits of equipment I havent got a clue about.

Great weekend of cycling in France - Friday was a good solid ride, 90km with 1,000m of climbing, and then yesterday 110km with 1,300m of climbing and an average speed of 36kph. Despite both rides being near 3,000 calorie burn, I've come back heavier. The boys said they've never seen anyone eat so much food!

Tonight back to the gym, no great shakes but a good pump. Got an even next Saturday on the bike, then it's going to be balls to the wall in the gym until Christmas. Want to gain some decent muscle.
