I finally realised, this xmas just gone, that the secret is to just not go so far backwards at holidays, etc!!

The pain of shifting the weight is far worse than the pleasure of eating it. I drop 2lbs over xmas! Still ate a LOT of great food and was always full, I just up'd my running a bit and stuck to the basics no simple sugar EVER, no bread, pasta, rice potatoes EVER. No vegetables from below the ground EVER .

Was knocking back fat bombs and cheese all day long though!
Conversely I put on a kilo over xmas.. I blame xmas pudding, mince-pies and chocolate

You've not really got the hang of keto, have you?

Nah, you only put on half a kilo of fat. The rest was water.

Was thinking the same hehe. Seems to be another part-timer that does keto a couple of days a week then fills his/her fat face with pies and cake on the other days and then wonders why it's not working. silly

Keto Christmas was brilliant. My first.

It was enlightening to say the least - watching everyone else slumped, half asleep, half pissed and ready to burst with over-stuffed stomachs. Meanwhile I was wide awake, stone cold sober and actually enjoying the day rather than waiting for an excuse for an early night. I realised I never actually used to enjoy Christmas all that much...retrospectively it’s only ever been about getting wrecked and falling asleep looking like I’d just swallowed a space hopper. Not unlike the first victim in Se7en.

Each to their own of course, but I think the point I’m probably failing to articulate is that there wasn’t any temptation at all to go off the keto rails. Quite the opposite biggrin

ITYM does keto 350 odd days of the year and then visits family for xmas. Granted I didn't have to go for the pudding and chocolate, but when the rest of the meals weren't keto friendly, I thought in for a penny, in for a pound. I'm back into it now and it's coming off again.

I found xmas meals really easy for keto - meat/veg!

Normally I'm having to dodge pasta/rice/etc but xmas was just turkey and greens aplenty!

Unless I discover a brand of keto beer by Friday I will be coming out of ketosis then.

Which may be just as well because I am not enjoying keto this time and my rowing (which I am keen to improve this year) has suffered.

How long have you been keto?
It can take some time to fully adapt before any benefits are gained, maybe even feeling/performing worse for a while.

This time 2.5 weeks. But I've used it on and off since the 1980s.

I do shed fat on it, but I also tend to look haggard and my performance suffers in sports where explosive energy is required. Endurance is generally better on keto though.

I used to be a keto evangelist, but now I consider it more a necessary evil that needs cycling with a carb-based diet.

IME it takes several months to properly adapt and reap the rewards from any major dietary change.
I was full on vegan for 14 months and that took a while. It took a year for me to realise the downsides though. hehe

4 years was the longest spell I spent on keto, though I did cycle it even then.

I used to look okay on it when I was in my 20s, but when you're north of 40 it can make you look rough and like your facial features are painted on. Daniel Craig in Casino Royale is a case in point, though he had the head start of being better looking than me and lean all his life.

I don't know if this has already been posted here but I happened to spot a link from LordGrover in the PH Losers weight loss table about the Carnivore diet which is a more 'hardcore' keto diet and found it a very interesting read with a lot of questions answered about nutrient deficiencies on such diets.

Linky.

I have been reminded today about the keto illusion.

Last week I'd been on keto for 3 weeks and my clothes fitted fine.

Over the weekend, I carbed up and now my shirts are tight. Happily in the arms and shoulders, but tight nonetheless (and it's not all lean gains).

Anyone adding in IF to their keto?

I've been 16/8 for ages and now finding 20/4 more fun as I can have a great evening meal at 6pm and enjoy some keto snacks in front of the TV until 10pm. Hitting all my macros in 4hrs leaves me going to bed really full.

Now planning a 36hr fast - tonight is movie night so my 4 hr window ends around 10pm at the cinema with a fat bomb I'll sneak in! No food Wednesday, will eat again Thursday. Either at 10am (36hrs) if I wake hungry.....or at 6pm as normal if I can make it. Most likely will eat at 2pm after the gym. Plan to use bone broth (3 cups) on Wednesday so not a 100% fast - but close enough.

I'm not strictly keto, but I'm enjoying the delights of OMAD weekdays. I simply have one large meal, usually a steak or two, eggs and maybe some cheese at 1800. Weekends I have a large cooked breakfast/brunch and something substantial for tea.

Yes I eat between 10am and 5pm and just water outside of that.

I do a water fast when switching from normal eating to keto but wouldnt do it whilst already in ketosis

Thought I'd update on my fast - ate at 10pm Tuesday night (while watching Vice - all the actors....amazing....film, not so good) and plan to eat around 10am today - so 36hrs.

Don't normally eat till 2pm (although I listen to the bod - if I'm hungry at noon I'll start early and train hard afterwards......normally I train fasted at 1pm so no harm mixing it up a bit) so yesterday was easy getting to the afternoon then I had a bone broth at 2pm (I know - not a 100% fast bone broth is fine for what I wanted out of it)

Had another broth at 6pm when the kids ate - not at all hungry, just missed eating (purely in my head) - had a meeting at 7pm, home at 10pm and had a final broth watching TV. Went to bed feeling 100%.

Woke this morning and dont feel hungry at all - had a broth for breakfast and plan now is a coffee with MCT oil around noon then just drop back into regular keto meals 2-9pm. (my eating window goes between 16/8 - 20/4 - OMAD depending on how I feel and how my day looks. If I am out all day, rather than use it as a chance to snack non-stop (as I used to) I use it as a chance to look forward to a single big meal in the evening.

Anyway - I know its not a hardcore fast or even that long......but very easy and a great way to drop a 2000 cal deficit into my week (on top of my regular daily shortfall) with little hassle. Plan to do it once every few weeks.

Bone broth doesn't equal a fast as far as i'm concerned, water only anything else can interrupt autophagy
