What does beer taste like when you come off keto? I had a sip of bud last night at the football intending to drink the full bottle but the sheer sugary-ness prevented me from doing so. Given bud is normally just weak tasting and fizzy this is not a great precedent. I am close to dreaming about a nice cold ipa so hoping its going to do the business come the time.

Yeah I think it’s normal to be super sensitive to sugar after a period in ketosis. A few weeks ago I ate a Dorito, which I’m sure most would not consider a sweet “food”. Good lord it tasted awful. Like a sugar coated bathroom tile!

As an aside, I think it’s important to try to dispense with the idea of sticking to keto ‘for a few weeks’. By its nature you must be prepared to stick with it forever. As soon as you go back on the carbs, the usual, ridiculous insulin-driven hunger cycle will return. If you view ketosis as just a weight-loss programme, it straightaway becomes a “fad diet”.

Keto is about improving health. Lowering glucose and insulin concentrations. Reducing inflammation and oxidisation. The weight loss is simply your body returning to its natural homeostatic condition where it is happy and at one with nature, and it will stay there so long as you stick to the plan.

In my opinion only, of course. Others may not agree smile

We had a charity event recently which involved cakes.

I had a bakewell slices against my better judgment and apart from it tasting so sickly, I just didn't feel right for the rest of the day.

I find myself really fancying something sweet now and again, purely from the memory of it being nice than for any real desire, and then am sorely disappointed

Yeah I hear you. I’m now way past that stage though. I wouldn’t go back to a regular diet even if there were no consequences for me. All desires for carbohydrates, simple or otherwise, are long gone.

People ask me how I deal with the deprivation. “What’s left to eat then?!”. I just smile now. If only they knew. It’s the opposite of deprivation...you can eat pretty much any food, real food, including all the fantastically tasty demonised stuff. All I have to avoid is stomach-bloating, hunger-driving rubbish. Everything else is on the menu. I’m converted for life, and will not touch another slice of bread or cake again so long as I draw breath. It’s liberating biggrin

Yeah the sugar sensitivity is expected, i had it berore when i came back from 6mths living in the myanmar countryside.

I started keto hakf to lose weight and half to tackle my insulin/energy issues. For the latter issue its been great and i certainly dont want to return to those energy crashes i used to endure.

However i’m a bit if a gourmand and whilst i dont find this diet at all a chore, there are things i sometimes really want to eat and drink and i’m not a believer in restricting myself in that way. I will be aiming to transition to a diet/exercise plan which strikes a balance yet keeps the insulin in check

Best statement on PH for a good long time.

I've been doing it for a couple of months, have lost about 16 pounds and feel a lot better. It's a bit harder to do as a vegetarian but mushroom omelettes, lots of veg and some nuts to inject a bit of quick fat seems to be working.

I'm also combining it with intermittent fasting, i only eat in a window from about 5 to 8 in the evening, only water the rest of the time.
I have read that if you combine keto with fasting you can up your carbs a bit, 75 say rather than under 50. Do we think there's any truth in that?

Blimey that’s good going. I’m unsure I could successfully stick to a ketogenic diet as a vegetarian. Not because of the lack of animal muscle, but because the lack of animal fat!

You probably already know this but don’t cook with olive oil or the like. The smoke point is too low and it will oxidise, which is bad m’kay. I assume you cannot use animal fats, lard etc? You should get some raw organic coconut oil for frying and cooking smile

RE: fasting. I can’t offer any advice there. It doesn’t work for me, as my liver starts manufacturing too much glucose if I fast.

ETA: it seems there’s some conflicting information on oils. I may have got that completely wrong biggrin

Nice to see some enterprises springing up around the concept

https://www.naturalketosis.co.uk

EDIT : Scratch that. Doesn't seem to have been any activity since before xmas, and there's no physical address that I can see on the site.

Aside from that, I think there'd definitely be a market for LCHF snacks. There are plenty of high protein ones around, but they all still have a load of sugar in them

Indeed. I got a coffee in a petrol station yesterday. No Nuts, pepperamis, single-serve cheeses. Not even pork scratchings.

supermarkets sell decent selection of pork scratchings.
Salty seaweed is also a good salty snack.

I’ve been known to knock back a small pot of double cream in an emergency. It may sound ridiculous but it’ll give you enough energy to keep you going for hours biggrin

hehe

Wow. I've been eating/drinking heaps of double cream (in espressos or with a few berries) but not tried chugging it straight from the pot rofl

I like how may places are selling these spinach and egg pots. Sainsburys, Tesco, Boots all do them. Two eggs and some spinach per pot - though the boots ones are a bit light on spinach. Two of them and some olives or ham/turkey slices makes for an awesome lunch

I've been doing the peanut-butter smoothies someone mentioned on here a few weeks back. They fill up nicely, but there's not a lot to chew on there smile

A pack of sliced chorizo or salami, and a Babybel or two makes a good supermarket lunch.

I have been known to buy a big bag of washed spinach from the salad section and eat it like Doritos. smile

Bang in a handful of almonds and maybe a square of dark chocolate. Adds a nice texture smile

I use peanut butter sometimes in my mixture I use to break my fast, it thickens it up some, not as good as an avocado does, but it works.

Unless you’re a body builder I doubt you need more than 20-30g of protein per meal.

Personally I’ve never used a macro calculator. My ratio is thus;

I don’t count carbohydrates - I just don’t eat them unless they’re green.

I count protein - maximum 60g per day, no more than 30g per meal.

I don’t count fat - I just eat when I’m hungry, and stop when I’m full.

Works for me biggrin

I think even if you're into building muscle (and I am, by natural means) I think that old 90's bodybuilder mantra of protein-Protein-PROTEIN isn't really needed.

175g protein sounds a lot.

I'm aiming for 148F, 119P, 24C according to myfitnesspal. I'm 70kg.
