While lemmingjames ponders making his own, where are you on the supplement spectrum?

Do you rely simply on what 'God gave you', or is your cupboard awash with big, plastic containers?

Often people rave about whey x or amino acid y, when they haven't, in fact, tried very many in order to differentiate between products and brands. So pinches of salt all round.

But with so many single and combination supplement products on the market, I'm still interested in how you have developed your intake of various products and seen genuine success with before, during and after type products.

So... just chat away! biggrin

Very simple set of supplements for me, mostly centred around increasing my protein intake without increasing my carb/fat intake as my three main meals are already protein heavy:
Fish oils, I don't like fish especially oily fish so this is the best way for me to get my omegas
Rage NO Pump Xtreme pre workout, like the pump this gives me and also another dose of Creatine
Matrix Anabolic Protein post workout that also couples my post workout BCAAs and Creatine saving me another drink
Matrix Micellar Casein, pre bed protein
ZMA before bed to help me sleep

I like the Matrix products, not amazing but good value for money if you can get one of their regular offers.

I've tried various high calorie bulking proteins over the years but I do not have a problem shoveling in the calories with normal food so I've never found one I like.

I've also tried various multi vitamin packs including Animal Stak, didn't really do anything for me, unlike fish oils.

Final thing I've tried is various fat burners, all useless for me unless they contain (the now banned) ephedrine.

I've tried loads over the year......generally not worth the money.

My go to list:
Whey- unflavoured, Myprotein (or competitors- whatever's cheapest for 5kg)
Fish oil- no fussed on brand- cheapest
Vit pills- cheapest
Caffeine pills- Cheapest 200mg pills
Oats- not a supplement as such, but a major part of my diet.

Possibly worth it:
Creatine mono- cheapest

Treat:
Pre work out with DMMA
Ephedrine

Whey Protein for running/hiking recovery and to top up if not been able to get enough with normal food.
Multivitamin and Omega 3 oils for old creaky knees.

That's all now - tried other stuff but couldn't see any other reaction other than a lightening of my wallet.

I tried ZMA and it does help you sleep, tried some NO tablets as a pre workout thing but benefits were marginal.

A good Nespresso and a bag of crisps if not feeling like it sorts me out.

Other than that Whey, careful with the flavours, some are lovely, some smell like vomit and some are so strong they make your eyes water, Vanilla and Chocolate are safe bets.

My neuro rehab team asked me to stop all supplements until my blood levels sort themselves out....

It's not too bad on a completely supplement free diet - I do miss some of the amino acid products I used to take for recovery & some of the creatine products (just basic ones) were good for strength.... although the biggest pain is the lack of convenience - eating instead of a shake etc.

It took about 3 weeks to get my diet in check however - it's difficult to get the same nutrition without the shakes and keeping calories in check.

I take a multivitamin, milkthistle and st johns wort every day. Don't bother with protein supplements, I used to, but now I just make sure I get around 100g a day from food.

During my first year of weight training and new diet, I tried most products, pre-workouts, different powders and tabs that promised much but in reality deliver zilch.

Now, almost three and a half years in, I just have standard whey and casein protein powders, fish oil capsules and a multi-vit. My pre-workout is simply including whole milk and a banana (rather than just water) in with my whey protein shake.

You can waste so much money on complete crap if you're not careful, and most of the supplements are complete crap - but a multi-million pound business...

I read... on the internet, so I'm sharing a third party statement, not my own - that mixing whey protein shakes with milk (rather than water) is a bad idea as the sudden dosage of protein can be stressful for some organ or other (dunno, can't remember now).

I used to mix mine with skimmed milk, in the belief that it would taste nasty with water, but have since switched to water and it's fine.

The only time I have it with milk is an hour before I workout, with an added banana mixed in. I am sure there have been many studies on the effect of more protein going through our systems, and all of them (I think), conclude there are no ill effects at all.

I did usually buy the Optimum Nutrition whey, but of late, it's gone up to almost £50 a tub, the same as the more expensive to produce casein, so I switched to Musclefood's own grass fed whey brand, which is around £10 cheaper. Seems ok...

ETA - Forgot to mention, I do also take creatine, but not sure what real effect that has for someone my age, as I have read (from more than one source), that it's more beneficial for younger guys, and not so much for older guys - but I still use it, as it's so cheap anyway.

I mix it with full fat milk if I'm having just before bed as I believe it slows the absorption rate down a wee bit.

Any other time it's with water and the smallest smidge of milk.

Possibly better ways to take but works for me.

Well, my eating is off-point so it seems pointless to bother with supplements.

My daily macros recently, no supps involved.

Only supplement I do take is a preworkout called predominate which is a performance booster rather than stim.

And what was the day's menu too. Chicken and eggs for breakfast, lunch and dinner (and snacks in-between) must be seriously dull.

4200 cals.
I'm still playing with macros but bear in mind I'm also 160kg so protein wants to be around 300g.

My day went:
Weetabix
Chicken and rice meal
2 cheese burgers
Chicken and rice meal
Eggs, bacon and beans
Chicken and rice meal

Chicken and rice meal being different sauces each time.
Not bored yet, quite enjoying it although it's only my first week.

Previously I was on around 250g protein a day but wasn't the best foods.

Edit: all the above works out around £5.50 a day too. I'm probably the tightest Yorkshireman on here laugh

Surprised so many people still eat junk food, like whey and casein. They can damage the heart, kidneys, liver, blood, and bones. There's a reason most bodybuilders die young (not just steroid abuse).
