Interesting how 'having a drink' is still a form of social acceptance.

Went to two kids birthday parties in last fortnight,
I'd have need a bottle of wine to get me through one of those hehe

Too much, don’t drink on a week night but have a session on either a Friday or Saturday, a few on a Sunday afternoon then that’s it again. Reading this thread I’m suprised that quite a few people drink on a Thursday.

A Thursday? hehe

I have a drink every night. I do keep it to a couple of large glasses of Wine (6 units) Mon-Thurs though.

I’m not a big drinker to be honest, Maybe a pint at the weekend which I really enjoy.

Has anybody tried seedlip non- alcoholic spirt? With a decent tonic water, it’s very good...

Considering the percentage alcohol duty makes up of the price of a spirit paying £30 for a bottle of alcohol free spirit is expensive.

Fancied trying this, but I think they're having a laugh with the pricing. You can buy some very nice craft gins for the same or less and as mentioned much of that is duty.

I started this thread some time ago now, partly as a reality check to myself and I need to admit little has changed.

If anything, I am drinking more. I recognise that often a drink is the thing which I look forward to most, my life seems to revolve around planning afternoons and nights out.

It's all a bit of a mask for some serious disappointment in myself and where my current life is. I do think it's time for a change, but I have no intention of giving up alcohol altogether.

Not sure where to start, maybe restricting my drinking days - Wednesdays I attend a social event where drinking, while not mandatory, is a big part of it. Then weekends there's an obvious draw.

Maybe alcohol free Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Tuesday is generally my 'low' day though for several reasons.

I would suggest reading up on Selencro and Naltrexone. Both work. Although Selencro has much stronger side effects ( nausea/headache) but doesn't require a prescription, Naltrexone has much less/no side effects but required a Drs prescription and liver function test.

Oh god I don't think I need anything like that! It's definitely more of a psychological dependency than a physiological one.

I mean it's more a case of life is a bit crap, so having a drink gives me that something to do etc..

I think they should be much more widely prescribed. Have a read about the Sinclair method. Those two drugs are very suitable for treating the psychological dependency/habit which builds up over time. Regardless of whether or not there is a physiological dependency.

Infact is there is a physiological dependency you're unlikely to be allowed Naltrexone anyway.

How about developing a new interest/hobby in your life. A really absorbing pastime that you really enjoy will take away the time you have which allows you to routinely think about drink !

I would not focus on what you are not going to do. Focus on what you are going to do instead.

D1brans post resonates with me it really does.

I've been off the red wine for a week now. I've still drank every day but a lot less (in terms of units). So far, best thing I've ever done with regards drinking. No hangovers, heartburn massively reduced, and not missing that red poison one bit.

The other half says she's noticed a difference in me and does suggest she wants to seek alternatives too.

I don't think I really want to give up completely but it's nice to feel in control again.

Does anyone else find the weather is not helping?

I've got in to the habit of buying cider buy the box (like a 3-5 litre bag in a box) and having it in the fridge, and then it's like "it's 7pm and I've done all my jobs, I'll have a cider!"

I've just been for lunch with my girlfriend and we discussed this, she actually feels that I need something else to focus on, particularly on a Tuesday.

I like to run, but I have of late let this slip. Tuesday used to be a running night, but I have let my association with the club go because of a difficult relationship with an ex, I now run (a very social run!) on a Wednesday. Tuesday also marks my first night home alone after my girlfriend has spend the proceeding three nights at my place... it's just generally a duff day for me.

Perhaps I need to find something new? But it does seem like the time between getting in from work and bed is often all too conveniently filled with cooking dinner and sinking a couple of drinks.

Thought about the gym? Could schedule it into the days your GF is away.

Lots of benefits. All sorts of programs out there for various goals.

I’ve recently added swimming into my routine. Find it really clears the mind in a way running never has done for me (but does for lots of people).

I do not drink much - a couple of pints of beer or a bottle of good wine. Sometimes I can drink a glass of pure whiskey or rum. But not often.
