Quick check in, training going well, doing lots and lots on the bike so my cardio is really good at the moment and I'm still beating the log book on a regular basis in the gym. Implementing an easier week every month or so - something I've never done before, and I'm really feeling the benefit. All good.

Just started my deload week. Very pumpy, and no to little CNS failure.

Finally putting a little gym together at home in the garage and just had a question about barbells...I notice the standard length is 7 ft but I don’t have that much space. Would a 5ft bar be ok? I only weigh 80kg so unsurprisingly I’m not lifting huge weight...when I had a barbell once before I was only bench pressing 30kg plus the weight of the bar.

Also I notice they come in standard and olympic and weight plates come in both diameters...is there any benefit to me of getting an olympic bar over standard? I like the look of the bigger weight plate but is there any practical benefit to having the olympic bar if I’m not lifting massive weight?

Any pointers much appreciated!
Just look at the maximum the bar is rated for and make sure its enough for you. 7ft is what many power racks are made for, so if not using one then 5ft is fine and more practical as you say.

I've tried a deload training, especially as I'm under a coach but I do so much better just relaxing at home, staying hydrated and eating.. But then it kills me not being at the gym laugh

Been taking it easy this week. Definitely not at full strength. It’s frustrating to have such a set back when things were going well.

I need to be careful as my infection has flared up again today following a night at a music quiz! Hardly a wild night in town.

I admit it does irk me as I load up the bar with 60%. biggrin
But I've found that for me, staying active and doing something is better....things tend to ache and contract if I do nothing, plus I'd be more grouchier than normal doing nowt.

It may be an age thing. I used to feel fine doing nothing for a week or two. I now feel bloody awful if I don’t do something, even if it’s reasonably easy. I’ve got a neck injury at the moment, and doing nothing seems to be giving me all sorts of aches and pains that I don’t usually have.

I’m only 36 and I imagine it gets worse.

It's only a guess, but I think keeping active stokes the fire. Do nothing and the body will recover and fix and you'll have that golden hour where you're all good to go, but very quickly you'll degrade. Bu keeping active you'll recover a certain percentage and your body will still thing it has to do crazy stuff.

I can’t listen to that dude! Not because of his made up stories but because he speaks at 5 words per minute! It’s like slow motion.

One hour on the turbo yesterday, I've also incorporated a short intensive cliff walk to be undertaken daily, 400 steps down to the bay 400 back to the top x2.

Most folks in my gym would struggle to bench 100kg for 3x8 let along strict press it. Thats just insane lol!
My PB for today 85kg Bench press for 11 reps, giving a calculated 1RPM of 118kg getmecoat

Strong smiffy! -- tonight was 1hr on the bike, last night was a decent back session, despite it being an easier week had a rep pr on some of my rowing which is nice. Making a effort to cut down on my red meat consumption just for bit, and increase more plant based foods like carrot cake and such like.

I got a bug that put me out of action for about a week- training, eating, and everything else was out the window.... Still not 100%. but as close to as i'm likely to get seeing as it's the last 5 weeks of prep. Being ill actually made me leaner, but i'd not recommend laugh

On track, few more kg to go to really bring in the lower back/glutes/hams. 4th April is comp day, so i'd like to be ready 1-2 weeks in advance.

Simply have to dig in now, as it's gotten quite hard- training is tough, and strength is down. Mentally it's a work out too, feel small and flat etc etc Hunger is real, but i just have to deal with it..... I'll even add in cardio soon!

Lean, mean, and hungry- but on track and feeling confident i'll get where I need to be, without having to do anything too extreme late in the day.

It would be interesting to see your calorie intake during the journey. I assume you were at 4k going into the prep with drops at certain parts. Now at? 2k? I recall a couple of years ago you mentioned the final push at 800+ lot's of cardio, i.e negative

I've not fully been counting, but yeah, was around 3500-4000 to start and now around 1800-2000. (Last prep was a mess up, so i'll not be doing the drastic things i did that time around)

So far only diet changes- protein always remains high, carbs/fats stripped back accordingly. I walk everyday for a couple of miles, but other than that no cardio added in. Probably will next week.

Gone from around 104kg end of October, and currently about 96kg ( I think, not been checking)
Waist has dropped about 3-4 inches.
Training has remained the same as it was when bulking. Strength has dropped off a little, particularly on pushing- but pulling and legs seem to have stayed as they were.
Like to have thought i've retained all my lean mass, but idk. When I fill up with carbs, certainly appear to have kept it, just that's rare, and i'm mostly flat- which is a headgame in it's self!
