Controversial I know but unless you're training for Strongman or powerlifting you don't really need deads. Risk/effort/reward etc.
Always open to suggestions if you have any mate. I have no clue (and no one to ask) that's why I come on here.

All I have to work with is a barbell, an EZ bar, an old punch manikin, and a pair of trainers. What I don't have is much time, or patience for loads of complex exercises, so aside from a couple of 5Ks a week, what I've finally ended up doing by trial and error, is variations of curls, bench press, OHP, squats, Pendlay rows, and deadlifts (I must confess I'm struggling with those last two, but I'm not one to give up).

Aside from my upper back feeling a tad overworked at times, the exercises seem to not encroach on one another too much, and meet my other requirements, so that's why I'm here but honestly open to any alternate suggestions and comments. As I say, I'm learning.

You google any exercise and get told "it's the best exercise ever" so it's hard to know what's best.
Squats and Pendlays virtually cover deads. Easiest and far less taxing option would be kettlebell swings instead. If you had a kb biggrin Personally I'd just ditch the deads in favour of getting squats and Pendlays bang on. Save your energy for when you start pullups. smile What's your training goal? I notice you're quite a keen runner, so gaining size isn't the target...
You can easily flip that on it's head and say that Pendlays and Squats are just as dangerous as deadlifts. Even the simple KB swing can cause an injury if done incorrectly - in fact, anything can.

If he's doing deadlifts well, there's no reason to knock it on the head - that's just you projecting your own training preferences, rather than being objective.

Prof - here's my advice - email Ben (didely) and get a bit of online coaching from him.

Predictable.

Deads lead to more injuries than Pendlays and squats in novice lifters because 1. beginners often lift unecessarily heavy, and 2, beginners don't realise how much technique is involved in them.

KB swing generally involve less weight so is inherently safer for beginners.

A forum is the place for discussion, you should get used to opinions contrary to your own.

You're quite correct, what I said is indeed predictable, because it's true. There's easily enough scope for a novice to injure themselves with squats & pendlays.

Which is to ignore my points - you can still injure yourself, which is why you're advocating he bins deadlifts

I'm totally cool with contrary opinions, I often learn from them. What you're doing, however, isn't offering a contrary opinion - you're basically saying that he should train the way you train. That's different.
My bold.

I don’t think we have any worthwhile data on injuries from any lifts. We do know that injury rates overall are tiny.

I think fear of injury causes many many times the harm that injuries do.

(FWIW, I’ve injured myself deadlifting, completely randomly, but have also injured myself doing practically everything ever.)

I've never injured myself doing deads, but gave them up as the cost/reward was concerning. Plenty of shoulder injuries though. It wouldn't surprise me if the number one weightlifting injury was something like dropping weights onto your foot/other bodypart. hehe

Today from me was gym this morning nice strong chest session on chest, using the 95ib dumb bells for the bench press which has been a while, then 2 really fast races on Zwift and finally a swim in the bay, feeling nice and strong.

Decided to get some structured training in on Zwift so started the 4wk FTP Builder program today.

29.2km @33.5km/h.

Interesting stuff with the intervals etc and certainly harder than expected jumping from lower to higher and higher to lower power and maintaining it steadily. Enjoyed it a lot. Day 2 tomorrow

I don't know if we have some kind of fitness/youtube/social media discussion thread. Might be nice to make one.

Yeah, saw that. Nasty.

Say 2 of the 4wk FTP Builder...

Except I somehow managed to do the Day 1 workout again.

Another 29km @33.5km/h it was then...

That's what can happen when you get monstrously strong muscles from taking PEDs but the ligaments don't develop at the same rate. Silly injury.

Friday: Bench press x 4 sets, OHP x 4 sets, EZ curls x 6sets, pull ups x 40 reps (dedicated to ORD).

Sunday: 7 short rounds on punch bag followed by a COVID-19 vaccine.

Missed Monday's highly controversial (biglaugh) deadlifting due to mild vaccine side effects. Missed two runs as well.

Today: Bench press x 4 sets, OHP x 4 sets, EZ curls x 3 sets, pull ups x 22 (so far, doing them between meetings and emails).

carrying on from the whole social fitness stuff. Has anyone seen the recent M*n's fitness video about a guy called chef rush and his day of eating? Being torn to shreds by many people for all the BS in it.
