I've had really really horrendous toothache for a few days now, slowly building up from a full ache to what I can now only describe as someone using a pneumatic drill directly in my mouth. I know the cause, which is an impacted wisdom tooth (fk all wise about these bd teeth) growing sideways along my gum into the back of the molar. 2 30mg codeine, 2 paracetamol and 3 ibuprofen don't even take the edge off it. I cannot get an appointment with my dentist until Tuesday at 9am, which won't do anything as this is a hospital job like my last one and NHS 111 don't want to know. I have been in pain before but this is something else. It's referring pain to my ear, head, a tooth in my upper jaw and the gum near the front of my mouth. I can barely function. I am sat on my bed just shouting in agony.

Not after any advice, I just need to whinge as this is defcon 1 on the pain scale. It's even trolling me. Every time I think it might be settling down it then springs back into action with a big fk you and comes back even more painful than before.

Anyone else currently suffering?

Brings back vivid memories for me that!
Wisdoms always been a troublesome history of our family. Sis had one done in hospital many moons ago and still to this day suffers with jaw problems from the op.

Mine sounded like yours.
Walked into dentist in agony with my Misses for support! I was x-rayed and long story short was booked to go into hospital. Almost as I was about to leave the dentist and 'specialist' (who apparently came into the surgery once a fortnight for 'difficult' cases) butts in and says she's looked at my x-ray and because her patient has not turned up, she's willing to 'have a go.'
I think about my sis.
'Ok, do your best!'

It took a long time but she 'drilled' the whole wisdom out.
I had a difficult couple weeks with pads and bleeding etc.
But after that. All well!

Won't help you, but I am so glad it didn't go the hospital route. wink

I had similar a few weeks ago. Pain like no other, radiating everywhere.

Next morning, after sleeping with a bag of frozen peas on my face, my jaw was swollen like I had a golf ball in my cheek.

Marched into the Dentist and within 5 minutes I was in a chair with so much novocain in my face I thought it would dribble out of my ear.

Pulled a tooth, drilled into the jaw and released the infection demon. Antibiotics for 2 weeks.

No pain since the first injection.

I thought it was an impacted wisdom tooth, turned out to be potentially life-threatening jaw infection.

Great to get straight in to see a surgeon, not so great that it has cost about 3k so far, and we havent even started thinking about an implant yet. This is Dubai though, where you get whatever you want, as quick as you want it, if you have the funds....

Sounds awful. You did really well to log onto to PH and post a long, well constructed thread about it in between the shouting however. Maybe the codiene has worked slightly better than you give credit for?

We have an emergency dentist on call and if the pain was that bad I would not have to wait until Tuesday to see them. The worst would be they would see me asap on Monday morning.

You need to maybe change your dentist.

It took me a while to write it, but it also gave me something to concentrate on other than the pain. I also hate not formatting my posts properly, so I always try and post proper sentences etc.

It is definitely something to consider, but all they would do is give me pain killers if anything as this is a hospital job. I had the same 6 years ago with the wisdom tooth in my left lower jaw, it had to be taken out at the hospital under a general anaesthetic. I was told this will be the same.

The pain has subsided for now, but I have been told by NHS 111 not to take any pain killers for a bit as I have over dosed.....

The pain has now gotten so bad that my right temple and most of the right side of my face is in absolute agony. I cannot cope with the pain. The only way to stop it for a minute is to drink something and keep the fluid on the right side of my mouth. Once I swallow it the pain comes back.

The NHS still do not want to know. I have never before felt a pain like this, it's the worst physical pain that I have ever experienced. I am typing this while having fluid in my mouth, as when the pain comes it leaves me a complete and total wreck.

clove oil may take the edge off it, I used it for two weeks when needing a root canal but in wrong country.

I find solpadene max helps to take the edge off. I have suffered from a few really bad toothaches, 1 ended in a&e when my face swelled up like a balloon.
Ive got one brewing, failed root canal which needs taking out or re rooting. Have flared up a couple of times but have managed to get antibiotics before it really started to hurt.

Thanks for the thought. I have a box of codeine already but they don't even touch the pain.

They're a stronger form of codeine aren't they? Not sure if that would work? NHS 111 seem to think that nothing other than removing the tooth will stop the pain.

I've been told not to put anything on the area that is causing me the pain.

I don't have an infection so not sure if that would work when nothing else has touched it. When the pain hits I cannot move, I just go to the fetal position and just shout. I thought the pain was bad earlier but I managed to ride that out and it subsided, this is a complete new level of pain though.

This sounds awful.
I once had an infected tooth that the dentist tried to treat with antibiotics. By the Monday I felt like my head was about to explode. Ended up getting another dentist to remove it which was an instant relief.
Try rubbing some Sensodine toothpaste on your gums as it may help.

I feel for you op, toothache is one of those things that you don't appreciate not having until you have it.

I hope you get it sorted soon.

I've been there , had to use iced water for a few seconds relief when my crown went nuclear over one weekend some years ago . The NHS directed me to the Whitechapel dental hospital immediately but then found me a local one to get to . Big needle followed by big pliers had the infected fker out double fast ! I honestly couldn't have taken any more pain . Get back onto them and demand a emergency appointment with a E D or dental hospital . Hope it ends well .

I'll be on the phone to the dentist first thing. My tooth is under the gum so it makes it that much harder to remove. I have to have it done at the hospital as I need to be put under. Still waiting to be triaged, but the pain is getting worse and harder to control.
