I went for my COPD check yesterday, blew into the 'spirometer' thing and then the computer whirred and banged and said my FEV had gone down from 5. something to 4.something. I can assume that this means I am worse than this time last year (I am) but I don't know what this really means: is 'death's door' opening with the 'Grim Reaper' hiding behind it or something less terminal?

Please help quickly as I may expire before my due date (or tomorrow - whichever comes sooner)/

COPD to my knowledge has 4 grades, the ceiling being in hospital on a pac-mask as you can't exhale properly, get one of those finger Oxygen meters the hillwalkers/mountaineers use as it's a good indication of your body processing the air you inhale. . . use it once a month and write down the results and hey presto within a short time you have your own chart for piece of mind and to show doctor/consultant when things get worse over time, hope this helps

D0 you know your 'normal' 02 sats with the COPD? It maybe worth learning what they are and consider carrying the info on you incase medical staff have to help you and you are unable to communicate, especially important where 02 maybe administered.

Hi,

Sorry, I cannot help too much, other than to say that my dad suffered with COPD and it wasn't nice for him, so I can imagine it isn't great for you.

He was looking to see if he could have a procedure done which is putting coils in the lung to open them up better. Unfortunately he contracted hospital acquired pneumonia which sadly he ultimately succumbed to.

If you haven't already seen about this, here is a bit of information.

All the best.
