Got out tonight, soaked through but I went our despite the rain.

Two weeks off has put me back by a huge amount though, I was hovering around 10min/10:10/mile, tonight I’m back down to 11:14. That’s enough to force me back out though. I’m not going back to how I was so I can’t have two weeks off again, whatever the weather. Very disappointed in myself.
Dissapointed at going out for a run when its pissing down ? dont beat yourself up too badly.

You went, just need to realise the pleasure of not going isnt worth the self recrimination after.

I just did a mile as a warm up at the gym, didnt want to do more as strained my calf a bit, will do a bit more next time, temptation is to try and up it every time and make it into a millstone, not long ago the thought of trying to do a mile filled me with dread and its pleasing its now a quick warm up.

Breathing is my trouble.
Back in my 30's I used to do 13 or 14 mile runs, 8min miles or faster, but that dropped off when I returned to cycling and other pursuits like house renovation and gardening.
A couple of years ago, at the age of 64 I started up again doing mainly Parkrun sort of distances. Got down to about 26 or 27 mins on a flatter course but then got calf and other muscle problems as well as knee pains. Dropped off again for nearly a year.
Started again recently, now 66. Parkrun distances again, 9 min miles but what I'm finding is my legs are OK but I'm breathing very heavily. Walk a few yards, I'm easing but then struggling for breath again once I get started.
I was diagnosed mile asthmatic about 15 year ago, and have preventor inhaler, although I often forget to use it. Seems strange though that I don't ever get an asthma attack, ever now, just heavy breathing when running.

That's the point I was making really, it's easy to sit around when it's not nice weather but I definitely regret it when I've not been.

Anyway, I went last night and broke the big milestone I was hoping for, I managed a 9.51/mile average over my flat 2 mile route. Very happy with it, especially after Tuesday's disaster.

I think now I'm going to work a little more on my stamina, I'd be happy with being around this speed but I still can't do more than about a mile without having to stop jogging, then the second mile is fits and starts.

My goal was 10k in under an hour by September and extrapolating from last night's run, I'd only be a couple of minutes off now so if I can manage to cover more distance before slowing down, I'd be there.

I've wondered whether I suffer slightly myself, my breathing has improved but it's still not 'right' and that's what's holding me back a little I think. Might have to make a trip to the doctors about it, I know I'd run better if I could breathe steadily all the way round.

Its a big of a lump to have int he gym anyway so might buy one if I can work out what model and capabilities it has, think you have to download tracks to it, there is a cellular version but not sure it works with my carrier and whether it works with Spotify like that. Will do some research.
I got an iWatch with cellular just for running! Even had to change my mobile carrier to EE (for all my company's phones) just to get it to work!

And it's superb - I know run with the watch and wireless headphones - thats it. Yet I have music, pod casts, runkeeper app and can call/text if I need to.

I've tried every option going (Garmin Fenix, running with a phone, etc) and this is the best way for me (even though I never use the watch for anything else - because I'd look like a geek)
It is brilliant but I still cant get it to connect to the WiFi in the gym, mine isnt cellular so not an option. I have asked three different people at the gym but may as well ask the dog about Quantum theory, going to try and arrive early before the IT folk leave for the day.

I didnt bother with cellular as neither my work phone or personal one are on a network that supports e sims yet, just thought copy tracks to it for running, use the copied stuff on it elsewhere or use the WiFi.

Its either the connection thing that asks for confirmation but not seen that in ages or potentially they only use 5ghz but that seems unlikely, just says cannot join that network.

Not been running outside yet, mainly due to weather but did 1.65 miles the other night in the gym, at a pace of 9.11 per mile, the track is boring but there is plenty to look at as you go round.

It says I used 239 calories which seems a bit much for 15 mins of running. May go for two miles tonight but may also mix the pace up a bit more, was a bit steady last time, I backed off the pace compare to trying to set a time, just went with what was comfortable and K knew I had done it but wasnt blowing too much after.

Its annoying though when some young trim Adonis trots past you effortlessly barely breaking a sweat, and then to compound it 12 year old kids tear past but to be fair they are done in by half a lap usually.

Wearing shorts for the first time in the gym today, worth 5 secs a lap I reckon biggrin
O2 have just started supporting Apple Watch - my s4 cell just turned up today and was connected to the network in minutes.

Hows everyone getting on with the heat?

I've just done a 10miler at 9.24 average and christ it was hard going in the sun.
Another thing I've dicovered lately is 'runners stomach' and its not too pleasant post run effects frown

I struggle in the heat. "invested" in a pair of running sunglasses from amazon to see if I can get on with them and they definitely help with being a bit more relaxed and avoiding headache from squinting, even if I do look a tit.

14 miles sunday, double day (10 miles total) monday, hill sprints yesterday and gym today. I feel pooped!

I have a few Spartan races coming up so have been trying to get used to the heat and how to deal with it. Finding almost constant sips of water keep me feeling ok as opposed to big gulps when really thirsty. Means running with a bladder but I'd use one on a Spartan anyway.

Still can't get my 5k under 21 or 10k under 45 though. Almost booked a 50k ultra for a laugh as it was local but discovered I was away that weekend so lucky escape!

I've actually enjoyed it, I've been going later in the evening when it's a little cooler and it's lovely. I'm still only doing short distances though, normally around 2 miles.

I've got two routes, one slightly hillier than the other and I alternate them, the flat one is round a nature reserve and obviously I'm slightly faster because it's flat, the 'hilly' one is a loop round the village I live in, more of a struggle but I feel it more in my legs so it's definitely doing more for me.

Last night, I did the hilly route at 10:06/mile, I'm going to try for sub 10 on the flat route tonight.

Update again following on from Tuesday. 9:50 over 2 miles last night, my breathing is a lot better and I can go further without having to take a walk break, it’s now more about mind over matter with leg muscles but I’m getting closer to being able to run the whole route without a break. It’s felt really good the last couple of runs.

Human body is quite cool revelation.....

Wanted to up my KM per week to build some endurance into my legs for hilly Spartan's that make 13k races feel like 25k.

So I went out on my favourite MTB circuit around the (crazy) hills in the chilterns and did a 26km run behind my wife who cycled as normal. Not really run over 10km in years - last time I did a half marathon was Reading 1992. Found it ok and did 7km fast run the next day!

Now going to aim for 50km per week in training.

Not run for a while now, my recurrent foot issue re-appeared and even walking isnt an option with that.

Any suggestions on the following gratefully received,

Basically I do something and the next day am in agony, its just knowing what, running was fine but had a week off work and did loads of DIY stuff so was knelt, stood on tiptoes, up ladders and whatever and then was out of action for probably nine days.

It comes and goes, typically on the top of my foot but the pain moves about around the ankle joint and the base of my Achilles, I tend to feel it getting better and then do stuff that sets it back again, nothing seems to make much difference other than time, and then it seems to dissapear within a day.

So, its possibly some position or stress I put it under, or alternatively I take Thyroxine for Hypothyroidism and ran out, took me a week before I got my prescription (my own fault) so wondering if that may be a factor.

Tried allsorts, thought the podiatrist providing insoles may have done the trick, think it helped as went a fair while without a problem and was able to run, so may be more than one problem at work. Painkillers dont make much difference, neither does icing, its typically my left foot though have had similar on the right, am 16 stone and 48,go to the gym and lift weights, walk quite a bit. have been lighter and it was no better.

I’m no expert but it sounds like your foot is landing at the wrong angle to me. I get pain on the outside of the ball of my right foot if I run on rough terrain, feels like a pulled muscle and results in me having a day off to recover.

It could be that your shoes are wrong for your foot? Insoles could help but only if the shoe is almost right, if the makeup of the sole means your foot rolls wrong, no insole will fix it.

Might be worth a trip to a decent running shop?

Cheers Rob, doesn’t seem to be running that caused it to be honest, had a week off and loads of diy and it went, now it gets better and then I seem to set it off again.

Got a docs appt on Thursday so will see what can be done this time round.

Going on holiday soon and a I don’t want another trip marred by it.

I have flat feet (and generally lax ligaments) and had various injuries and pains from running, throughout my 20s and early 30s. I had orthotic insoles and tried various stability shoes

A few years ago I read Born to Run and Natural Born Heroes. I made an effort to improve my running technique and to improve my overall conditioning, movement and balance.

I wear flat, lightly cushioned "minimal" shoes almost all of the time.

It took a while, but now in my early 40s, I appear to have got something right. I'm a fairly good runner, even on limited mileage, and in a good, lean, strong condition.

I haven't gone the whole way to Vibram Five fingers, but I do run in various 0-4mm drop shoes, run tall/straight with a forward lean, bent knee, land on the balls of my feet and touch my heels down gently, keep my cadence up, short strides leading with my knees, swinging my arms from the shoulder etc.

Running form appears to be very important, along with all-round/core strength, conditioning and balance. Many people run inefficiently and put unnecessary stress on the body. It goes without saying that being lighter will put less stress on the body.

Adapt slowly as calf muscles will take some conditioning. I recommend skipping.

I now have arches in my feet that were not there before.

Same here - had knee/ankle/shin/hip pain until I went barefoot shoes. All my shoes for running are now zero drop. Yesterday I did a 5k race (part of a biathlon paddle board/run) in five fingers as I could wear them in the water and on land...worked great, feel so light on your (strong) feet!

Big milestone for me tonight, I’ve finally managed to get my ‘hilly*’ route into the sub 10 mile average times, a month after managing it on my flatter route.

(*109ft as opposed to 9ft gain...)
