A table spoon of apple cider vinegar diluted in water, 15 mins before you eat, will solve that issue. Got to be apple cider vinegar, no other kind will work.

OP, tackle the mental side....hunger is your friend. Welcome hunger, it's a sign that you're pushing yourself. Like a stitch whilst running. Try and increase your hunger times before cracking. I'm hungry, and I'm going to stay hungry for 30 mins. Next time, 45 mins. Just build up your periods of hunger like you would distance running. You'll soon be celebrating going 6 hours hungry between sensible meals. 5 hours hungry will be a doddle. Eventually hunger becomes such a part of your life that it becomes normal, and you can be hungry without thinking about it.

And drink loads of ice cold water. Goes in cold, comes out warm. The energy needed to heat that water is burning calories. It's like exercise without doing anything.

So careful eating and stepping up the exercise, I had my first weight in, weight going the right way, down. So I am well aware of eating right and not dropping onto the 'reward' food. Ive felt hungry a couple of times but generally been feeling okay. No quick fixes. its a long road but weight went on over a time so its not going to just drop off.

Check out the slimmer's world web, Yes it can be a bit twee going to a group once a week. but thousands have done it and its a little bit of moral blackmail, don't want to go in and have an increase. lol.

if you do it right and ensure that you plan your food then you need never feel hungry. Its also about breaking habits...

A non smoker but a sweet tooth and a pizza lover, now I see whats in the recipe books and quick bites that I can have that wont push the weight loss the wrong way. I pay at the pump so that the ginster monster wont bite in the forecourt shop. just small changes.

Oh and walking helps, a walk last thing at night and doing things like not taking the lift at work.

Ill get there, and ill give the apple cider vinegar a try

Good stuff - that all sounds positive and maintainable.

It is a great feeling when you go down a trouser size.

Errr...no thanks.

It has worked for me so far, 3 stone down and 3 to go. No doubt other approaches are available.

I've been doing the calorie counting thing on and off for years, with varied results.

Have come across these two guys recently, and it seems weight loss is all about insulin, or keeping levels of insulin as low as possible. This also links in with the modern Type 2 Diabetes epidemic, which I would love to avoid if possible.

I am not doing a Keto diet because I just don't think it's practical for most people, but have tried to cut down on my carbs and sugary snacks (which is what spikes insulin levels), in fact any kind of snacking between meals. I'm also trying not to eat after 6pm and waiting until around 10am the next morning before eating again ie. 16hrs Intermittent fasting, which is really not that difficult when you get used to it, especially when you bear in mind you'll probably be asleep for 6-8 hours of that time. Time will tell if it's gonna be successful for me.

Intermittent fasting repeatedly has been shown not to have any benefit for weight loss over standard calorific deficit diet, but helps some people with regards to stating in a deficit due to a short eating window. The insulin hypothesis has also been show in ward tests to be incorrect- studies showed no greater loss of fat in keto compared to higher carb, *provided* protein was normalised and kept high for both groups. (Weight loss was greater in the keto group, due to water and glycogen, but fat loss was the same for both)

What works: Being in a calorie deficit; keeping highish protein, then get the balance for your calories from carbs or fat (avoiding sugary, fatty processed junk)

And remember- the no.1 reason for diet failure is lack of adherence, not the foods you eat.

There are loads of way's to achieve this, so pick on that works for you, and stick to it religiously.

Yes, but the apple cider vinegar really helps with the insulin side of things. I definitely feel less hungry, but that could be because I've got used to it. As I said, I know actually embrace being hungry. If I'm hungry, I'm doing it right.
I thought I'd try the apple cider vinegar yesterday. Two teaspoons of it in a glass of water before a carb heavy dinner at 8pm last night. Still not hungry yet (11:55am) and I've not had my morning bowel movement, so maybe it really does slow down the digestion of carbs.

I did wake up with some heartburn in the night, which is unusual for me.

The energy taken to warm that water is completely trivial compared to what's in food - from some back-of-envelope sums, a litre of water at 5C would cancel out one unroasted peanut.
You might want to check that calculation - the specific heat capacity of water is pretty high.

ETA, see this has already been mentioned - note to self read full thread before posting.

Has it worked for you due to the fact your intake of calories has reduced?

Almost certainly. That and doing more exercise. I've not suggested ACV is a cure all and you can eat like a pig and still lose weight. But it helps me reduce my calorie intake.

It happens sometimes, dont beat yourself up about it.

Are you using something like myfitnesspal to track your calories consumed vs your needs?

I lost 8 stone over 10 months (down from 20 stone to 12 and maintained by and large) without any gimmicks at all, just cut my calories down, bit of exercise (HIIT boot camps 3x a week) and I cut out bread, cheese, chocolate, alcohol, non-diet soft drinks etc, it wasnt THAT difficult and I will say the results of that little bit of dedication will always be worth it.

You got this.

I would find your BMR then use MyFitnessPal to track your food intake accurately.
I would look to be in a 500 calorie deficit per day.
Cycling is an excellent way of burning fat but we are moving into winter so to keep cycling when it is easier to sit on the couch watching TV get yourself a Turbo Trainer which you can fit your bike onto and use the App Zwift to give you motivation which has various circuits from around the world with training rides and races if you are competitive.
Also weight training would be very beneficial as putting on muscle will help with weight loss.

Thanks all -

bit of back ground - need to drop to 18 stone from 25.5 stone. I will do it, if I don't then its my own fault.

As of today Im cutting out bread sweets alcohol and takeaways, Ive got my 50th birthday celebrations out the way now and its on the way down, joined a group on facebook and its helping me understand the food monster.

I started a new job and part of the position requires me to use fall arrest and harnesses and to do that safely and still have ppe on and tools I need to be within a specific weight range. Im lucky that im being given the chance and also Im being given a reasonable time scale to do this.

Ill get down to 18 stone. and it will happen. and Ill be maintaining it !

onwards and downwards....

the bike I got is below....

3st 5lb lost now in 5.5months. Target was 6 stone, so still a fair way to go. But well into the regime now so pretty confident. Managed to turn down my own birthday cake, whilst family and friends enjoyed it.

I lost around 20kg (3 stone?) In about 3.5 months at the beginning of the year, from 85kg to 65kg.

I simply did a lot of exercise combined with a reduced calorie diet - no specific diet, just bread and cheese cut out mainly, ate everything else I usually have.

I've maintained my weight, despite putting muscle back and increasing for cycling; I train now with a sponsored amateur racing team for both MTB and road.

I eat more now than I did before my diet, it's fantastic. I stopped calorie counting a few months ago and weigh myself once every 2 weeks. During my diet it was 2x a day.

Exercise and a calorie deficit you can cope with, all you need.

This.
All this talk of keto and fad diets all boil down to one thing and one thing only CALORIES.
Be in deficit and you will lose weight.
