Working out in your 30s

Good grief. I can understand threads about training in your 40s and 50s but 30s?
the 30s are when a man is in his physical prime.
Indeed. Some strange stuff going on here. At 40, lower test levels in the average healthy man would be barely noticeable, same at 50. By 80 some men may have experienced a drop of 50%, but some possibly much less. Even at a 50% drop a male can function perfectly well in a gym environment. There is a theory that lifestyle change as we age is responsible for much of a male's drop in serum testosterone. Exercise really is a lifelong panacea from cancer prevention to obesity to longevity to fertility. Use it or lose it!the 30s are when a man is in his physical prime.

I know it’s different but cardio was always my form of exercise. I kept improving at running until I was 37 when I got glandular fever.
Managed a sub twenty minute five k which is a good benchmark. You’ve got at least another ten years of being able to consistently train and make improvements.
Another thing to consider is that you’re going to be lapping/out lifting all the guys sat on the sofa at home. You want to stay fit and healthy you don’t need to be a world beater.
Some of the strongest cyclists I know are around 50. Age is just a number and more often an excuse. Managed a sub twenty minute five k which is a good benchmark. You’ve got at least another ten years of being able to consistently train and make improvements.

The bloke in the photo is on gear.
Yep, was my very first thought. Never been on gear, but my local gym is full of sted-heads so I've learned how to spot the difference.I have no problem with people using gear though, I find it amazing to see the dramatic changes it makes to peoples physique - when done properly.
I have more respect for those that admit it though. I used to find that I was comparing myself to other guys, wondering why I wasn't progressing like they were, before realising that far more are on gear than not.

I am fortunate as I have a well equipped gym at home and lots of free time. I also enjoy it.
After years of an unhealthy lifestyle I developed heart problems in my late 40’s so I needed to get fit.
I am now 5 years into regular exercise in my home gym, but the niggly injuries take their toll.
I have arthritis in my spine which sometimes means a week or so of no training. I have arthritis in both feet which can mean the treadmill sometimes has to be missed. I also keep aggravating an old shoulder dislocation which sometimes reduces what can be done on the upper body work. I could work put more if I consumed industrial quantities of Ibuprofen but in my case that creates Kidney function problems.
The point is your 30’s are easy, be happy that you are generally healthy and your biggest problem is will power to get to the gym. Sometimes all I manage is some DPP yoga, which looks cheesy at first glance, but if you are an old creaky fker like me even that can be a challenge.

Could it not be because he's just finished training and is pumped to fk? This isn't a normal gym goer, he's a lifelong bodybuilder.
He's in exceptional shape but there's no doubt in my mind he's recently used gear. Not a criticism btw, an observation.Lincsls1 said:
Whilst I agree he's definitely on the juice, he's also clearly very dedicated and works really hard with it.
Looks fantastic at any age!
Still, I hate needles.
I never took gear when I got into body building early 20s because I didn't want to go bald.Looks fantastic at any age!

I never took gear and went bald. Sods law haha. Anyway 33 myself and started training again January and already back to my old top bench press I had early 20s. Muscle memory must be a thing.
10k PB at 22 - 39:41
10k PB at 34 - 38:22
Getting the PB at 34 was harder than at 22 and took a lot more training. Recovery is also a lot slower - after that 39:41 I would have woken up the next morning and danced a jig across the room. The PB at 34, I creaked about waiting for the rust to fall off of my Achilles tendons and my knees to actually articulate before thinking about stairs.

Hence why the whole industry is based on lies. Not many users will be honest enough to admit use.
The professionals yes. The people I knew, not only were open about it, but some would boast about how much they were taking. This was back in the 90s. I used to train on and off in late teens and early 20's with limited results, but like you OP, I certainly wasn't consuming enough calories or protein, purely because I didn;t take the time to understand it. At 30 I decided I was going to go to the gym and eat well etc and really make the effort. I am now a few months off 40 and am probably in the best shape of my life. As I've got older, I have reduced the weight I lift a bit and really focused on higher reps, but more importantly, the quality of reps. I have limited weights at home but I think I have actually put on more muscle during lockdown by just being more disciplined in what I do and eat.
