Well I've stopped drinking wine for 3 weeks, been mostly eating fish, vegetables, rice and salad for lunch and dinners, granola or croissant (plain) for brekkie and no snacks apart from carrot sticks, dry roasted edamame beans and grapes. Managed to put on 2kg, way to go! FFS.

I'm not sure how this is physiologically possible, but hopefully it's a reaction to stopping drinking stloads, my body grabbing sugars and storing them elsewhere because it's not getting its usual 'wine' sugars.
Well, still not drinking wine, not snacking on anything other than edamame beans and carrott sticks. Been doing 100 sit ups a day, having healthy lunches and dinners, lots of fish and vegetables, chicken etc, having barely any sugar - none in coffee, no biscuits, cakes, puddings, etc, not many grapes or sugary fruits, no takeaways. Doing a 4 mile fast walk once a week.

The results? Managed to put on another 2 kg. FFS what is the fking point, I was 77kg when drinking st loads of wine, generally eating healthy still but with sporadic takeaways and nibbles with no exercise. I'm now 82kg.

My 'medium' sized clothes no longer fit and I've had to buy bigger t shirts tops and jeans. I honestly am at my wits end, I've recorded everything I have on a normal day on the my fitness Pal app and my intake is usually between 1300 and 1600 calories per day. I just don't understand it, I've put on nearly 11lbs by not drinking 3 bottles of wine a week, eating healthily with healthy snacks, getting more exercise and doing 100 sit ups a day!!! Instead of my stomach looking lean like it did, it now looks a bit tubby with my chest and sides bigger too.

Questions:

Are you actually counting your calories? A lot of people unconsciously eat a lot more when exercising, and even clean food has calories. The answer seems to be yes, so...

...any symptoms apart from weight? My sister had a similar experience, had an under-active thyroid. Diagnosed, medicated and she has lost two stone quickly so far.

I went for the simple method of eating a little less and exercising a little more

No Calorie counting here.. although I do watch to see i get my 4 hours of exercise a day / 2000kcal of moving energy used.
Exercising = walking the dog, leisure walks and often a trip to the Gym to make up the numbers each day
Eating a little less = cutting down, not eliminating altogether, snacks from the fridge and biscuit tin and eating a healthy freshly air-fryered breast of chicken with some spices and a half a pot of 4 bean salad from Sainsburys - evening meal is the same as always to make it easier for SWMBO

Started weighing myself mid July and I'm down 2 1/2 stone already, about 16kg or so

more to go, but i'm happy with the progress so far

I wasn't counting them as I've always had a pretty good diet aside from the odd takeaway, but did when I started not understanding why I wasn't losing anything and indeed putting weight on. No I genuinely don't eat any snacks absently I'm very strict with my diet and have willpower etc, it's not an issue for me. I haven't eaten crisps, cakes, chocolate, desserts, sweets etc as a matter of course (Christmas etc the exceptions, but even then in moderation) for many years.

Having a think about this earlier and doing some research, it seems like I may have messed myself up by having too little to eat day to day, and as a result my metabolism is very low. So if I do have a fat Chinese or anything like that it messes it up. But then if I try and eat more to get myself out of it I'll put weight on as well!! I think more high intensity exercise might be the key. I only need to get down to 77kg then everything fits fine, at 82kg it's all a bit tight!

Weight gain with exercise...join the club. My weight is the heaviest for 12 months at present, I've being mainly focused on strength work versus cardio for exercise and do 3-4 30min strength sessions per week. Eatting is and will always be an issue for me, but I try. The mirror and clothes test suggests I might have traded far for muscle over the last few years. However I know what happens at Xmas time, so I NEED to get my weight over the next 4 weeks.

Another week, another pound lost. 13st 11 this morning, which is one pound off my target weight, and a long way from the 19st 2 I started at. End of next week should be there! Just in time for the gluttony of Christmas time. laugh

Looks like pretty good progress to me. Sometimes hard to see oneself, so I have a pair of trousers that are slightly loose when I am in a good place, and a bit tight when I need to do a bit more work...

Creeping down 17st 10lb this morning, but more importantly 3rd day straight I've been in the 17st range. I always used to weigh myself once a week but now find first thing in the morning after gym, so fasted and dry, and after work having had protein shake and a light breakfast and usually around 2 litres of water at around 6pm gives me a reliable daily measure see the trends and what foods are doing what to me....

Weight has crept up a bit. Some is because of injury (tendonitis on foot), still managing to do some exercise and upper weights, but some is food creeping back in I'd given up like white bread so I'll fast for 48hrs, get a new base line and once my foot heals, get back on the hikes.

Creeping is good...Less chance of loose skin.

I weigh everyday...It used to get on my tits seeing it fluctuate but I've switched off to that noise and now just look at trends. Also, weighing daily can also act as a reminder to keep hydration up when I see irregular dips.

Well, 3 and a half years in the making, but I’ve hit my target weight this morning, 19st 2 - 13st 10! Happy Monday.

I think I’m going to continue the calorie counting this week, to get a tiny head start for Christmas, got my work Christmas night out this weekend, then off work next week with a few food outings planned.

I’ll try and get some before and after pics this weekend or next week.

Awesome! A fat Chinese and a crate of beer to celebrate! Great work, I hope you kept your 'fat' trousers so you can take the obligatory pic.

Thanks guys, the success stories on this thread, really helped motivate me, been at the weight loss game since March 2022, joined this thread in August, and reached my target, so a massive thanks to all who contribute.

As for the fat Chinese, I’m much more a pizza guy, but a Friday payday treat may be in order…I don’t have my old trousers, but I do have a horrible red shirt, which features in my only photo of my old belly, which I intend to pop on for a comparison.

I weighed myself yesterday and hadn't lost anything but for some reason weighed myself again today and had lost 600g so a pound and a bit.

This why I don't weigh daily as there will always be minor ups and down.

The missus asked me what I want for Christmas and there's nothing I really need so had been looking into walking pads. The idea is I can put something on the TV and just do an hour or so of gentle plodding instead of sitting eating a bag of crisps or biscuits .

Three nights away this week, and I weighed myself on our return home.

I'm up 2.6 kg between Sunday morning and Wednesday afternoon. 65.0kg up to 67.6kg.

I know it's likely that things will settle back fairly swiftly, but it isn't half disappointing to have breached my 67.0kg target weight, even if that breach is short lived.

Dinner, bed and breakfast for three nights, including wine. It has a lot to answer for...

smash

Edit:
OK. I weighed again after a 6.9km (4.3 mile) run at 1704hrs. Nothing to eat since breakfast, not because I'm fasting, just because I'm not really hungry. I've had a couple of cups of coffee before the run. Weight now is 66.8kg, so down 800 grams in a smidgen less than 6 hours. Looking at my reflection after a bath, I'm less concerned by the apparent "weight gain" anyway. It looks like it may well be "water weight" after carbs, alcohol and salty Full English breakfasts. This was day 332 of my "Strava activity streak", and tomorrow I will go again. Getting quickly back into "normal" diet and exercise habits should give me some clarity. Fingers crossed...
