Gym competition this week to see who can row 2000m fastest.

I hardly ever row but managed 6:53.7 time which I was very happy with, think the last time I rowed was a great many years ago as I pretty much devoted all my training over the last good few years to distance running.

Row went fantastically well but I had an issue with pacing, did the first 500m in 1:38 and the last 500m in around 1:46-1:47. Rower was a Concept 2 on resistance 10.

That's a very good time, more so for someone who doesn't row. It bears testament to the fact that if you're properly fit, it is somewhat transferrable between disciplines.
Fitness in some disciplines transfers easier - cycling and rowing tend to work together quite well - or at least I've found that some low rate erg work has helped my cycling up hills a lot.

I did my 2k TT at lunch. Didn't think it would be any good - whilst my legs have recovered from the 10 mile run (longest I have run by a massive amount), I didn't think they would be sufficiently recovered for a time trial. Thankfully I was wrong.

6:58.8, was looking at being around 7:02 as the first 3 splits were at 1:46, but the last 500m was 1:41. If I'd paced the final sprint a little better, I would have beaten my PB (6:57.9).

Well done.

Tomorrow I'm going to be having another go at the 500m; so today I dialled in a minute to check on pacing.

354m, another PB, 1:24.7 average (actually 1:24.6, but it rounded). And with my lack of fade towards the end I feel like I'm going to smash my 1:29.1 500m PB. going to be a seriously horrible experience, but I really need to start pushing a LOT harder on these time trials.

500m trial at lunch. Jeeze, that was a dark and unpleasant experience.

1:27.1; massive fade in the last 150m, lost a good 1.5 seconds. But it is 2 seconds faster than i did a couple of weeks back.

Amazing the difference quitting cigarettes has made.

Yeah, trying to drag on a fag and hold the handle at the same time is a real bh.

I used to cycle and smoke at the same time.

Often used to have one right before and after a gym session too. Utterly stupid. Almost 4 months without them now.

Well i signed up to the gym yesterday and had a go on the row machine today. Concept 2.

Went on within around 30 seconds of doing 3 miles on a bike machine in around 9 minutes +

I done 1000m in 4 minutes 10. Clearly have some improvement to do, but I already knew i was unfit hence signing up.

I'll have to go on before doing a bike ride!

3.50 yesterday again after the bike, so a slight improvement.

After a good few years of inactivity I joined a gym............

Did a rate controlled 5k at 20 strokes per minute just to get a baseline of where I am - the answer as I suspected is supremely unfit!! 23m 47s for the 5k (went through 2k at about 8m 40-odd).
Lots of room for improvement there!!

probably the hardest effort you will make is the first one well done for getting your arse down there. Mine is still placed firmly on the couch.
If only there was a tablet for enthusiasm.

Just a little update; 5k time trial at lunch. Never trained for the 5k; only really done training for the 2k. So happy to be down to 18:59.1.

Felt surprisingly easy, although no idea how much faster I could have gone - heart rate monitor stopped working after a minute (decided to start working again during the cool down)

1M metres in one year...

That's 2,740m EVERY SINGLE DAY!

Or, slightly (but not much) more sensibly, 4,795m if you're in the gym 4 times a week.

Or, to put it another way, it's pretty much a half marathon every week. Every single week.

You must really love rowing! Bit too much commitment for me! Good luck though, brother.

That’s only 10 ish mins per day depending how quick you are!

I’m gradually getting back into it - back end of September I dislocated my shoulder with torn bicep and ligaments (surgically reattached in October) and detached my MCL - been in a leg brace since.

The ergo is helping to put some muscle back on my twiglet leg smile
I aim to have hit the 1m mark by June (but that’ll be 2.5 years since I started biggrin

Every day though! I guess a lot of folks can't commit to getting tot he gym every day - time family other training etc. And I know I don't have space for one in my place!

I’ve got an erg in my office. It rarely gets used, I do my rowing at the gym.

Since mid-Sept this year I've completed 1.2 million meters between on-water and erg work.

Haven't done a 2km in over 6 months, and was 6:40 in May 17. My 5k is 17:28 as off a couple of weeks ago, so hopefully I'll be well below 6:30 come spring.

You’ll be nearly as fast as Bradley Wiggins.
