Two days, two PBs.

Yesterday .... 1k at home. Better half was shouting me on, I was not allowed to stop. 3:17.7.

Lunch today, 2k. 6:57.4.

In 4 days I have now set PBs on 5k, 1k and 2k. I have no current desire to attempt another PB this week.

Although I am slightly nervous for the rest of the season, I have said to my other half that I'm wanting my 1k to be down to 3:10. That training will hurt. A lot.
Kudos to you lads for taking on the erg!

I used to be able to hold your 2k pace for 40 minutes in two separate 20 min sessions with a 20 min run in between. It was unsurprisingly called a 20,20,20. The best guys could easily hold sub 1:40's!

I've not been on one for years but I may give it a crack at the gym this week and let you know how I get on! I'd be surprised if I could hold 2 minute splits for 5k nowadays.

I wish I was close to my best; back in my late 20s when I first took it up, this sort of pace would have been a warm up for me. I was good for about 6:20 back then. Drink, women, marriage, smoking, etc. took its toll. Now over a year since I've given up nicotine, but getting back to my old pace just won't happen.

When you think that the half marathon record is at about 1:37 pace, and that some of the top guys have done 100k at under 1:50 pace ....

But I'm only ever really racing against myself. Sub 7 puts me where I want to be, and means that the rest of this season is going to be painful.

How many years since you've been on one? Depending on what you've done over the intervening time, you will have lost some of the pace. It'll be interesting to see how much!

I've just had a look at those times, they are insane!

My PB for 2000m back in the early 00's was 6:14 I believe. I can't exactly remember what my 5k was but about 16:45 I think.

I was pretty fit early this decade, I ran the London marathon in a decent time but it has tailed off somewhat. I lift weights in the main nowadays, cardio takes up so much time! Also still on the tabs now and then so perhaps setting an 2k/5k goal may finally give me the impetus to kick them for good!

Had another crack at 500 today, but it's just a lil fun thing before my proper workout, running is prime goal at the mo. Rubbish, 132 as opposed to my 128 the other day, funny how some days just seem so hard, though I did use a different rower and didn't chck the pace thing first.
I reckon with some effort post 10k run, I could get down to 2nd on the 500 list.

Yup; he's the fastest (outright) over 1k this season.

I wonder if he will be rowing OTW? There is not always a correlation between erg and OTW performance, but with guidance he is going to be an absolutely awesome rower.

Had no idea that existed - thank you. It really brings it home just how fit some people can be. The best time for 2000m on the wiki is still 13 * seconds behind the best time of the guy I know. I guess thats why he medalled in the World Championships in Florida last year! Reckon he stands a bloody good chance of an Olympic medal next time around.

  • 13 seconds doesn't sound much does it but on actual water that would equate to a 65 metre gap at the end of a race which would be seen as something of a drubbing. I'm in absolute awe of him and all you guys. Disability prevents me doing this but even when I was able I think I only got down to around 8:15 or so (but very short legged, old and fat!!) tore my hip flexor and spent the next 6months recovering from it. Moral of the story - unfit fat gits shouldn't get competitive!

Just an update the guy I know has just won gold in the World Cup in the men’s 4. Pipped Germany in the last 10 strokes. Brilliant stuff.

Getting there. 8.10 today (useless for any other exercises after though) frown

Good work. You’re only about 10W away, you’ll have that dusted in no time.

I’ve gone right off the boil, still averaging 20,000m a week but now I’m not chasing that sub 7 2,000m I’m just not getting any faster. It’s amazing how easily your fitness level just plateaus if you never push yourself into pain and exhaustion. I need a new target but right now I don’t even want to match my PB. Rowing every day does take the enjoyment out of it somewhat, maybe I need to get myself on the water.

After setting the 1k, 2k and 5k PBs, I've gone into a lull - just haven't had the drive to do much at all. But decided to get some minute intervals in - minute on, minute off. Felt really good at around 1:43 pace until I hit rep 12, at which point it all went unpleasant. Kept going for a total of 18 rounds.

I've been averaging about 8.5k per day this season, and enjoyed last week - virtually no rowing, primarily doing the ski erg, as I was working from home.

Need to find some new targets, so wondering what to go for .... probably going to aim high and see if I can get a 3:10 1k. Currently at 3:17.7. 7.7 seconds will be easy. Won't it .... ?

Benton has to juggle a regular day job as well .... He's still putting in an incredible pace, but is generally slowing down a little.

I was there cheering on friends, meeting up with people. Brilliant day out. But the Velodrome drinks policy sucks ..... I've competed at that place one before, and after experiencing it again on Saturday I have no desire to compete there again. The conditions are just way too dry (for a good reason).

My favourite events have to either be the ladies open 2k (top 13 were all sub 7), the ladies 30-39 (which was incredibly close, Rochelle just pulled ahead in the last few hundred) and the adaptive athletes - seeing a one legged guy pull sub 6:30 is amazing.

My daughter couldn’t believe how hot it was on the race floor.
Apparently they (Velodrome) control the humidity so as not to knacker the wooden track.

What do you mean by drinks policy?

The adaptive s were quite inspirational - andvto see the other rowers who had finished cheering the others on was just great to see.

I fancy a go next year (over 50’s yikes ), but need to knock at least a minute off my PB to get on the top 18 board!

Think Benton was 1.5 secs off last years score?
Slowing down then laugh

I haven’t actually done a 2k in anger this last year, mainly due to injury.
My last PB in 2016 was 7:32

I started rowing in 2016 and I've only "tried" at 2k a handful if times. The numbers look like this:

27 February 2016 morning Distance 2k Time 7:38.9
14 June 2016 evening distance 2k Time 7:35.8
23 Sept 2016 morning distance 2k Time: 7:33.5
15 November 2016 morning distance 2k Time 7:31.8

I am 5ft 9in, 90kg and, er, mid 50s.

I can hold a conversation whilst doing an 8 minute 2k, I can't hold one for several minutes after doing anything 7:3X.

Time was when sub-7 was my target, but I am not sure I am prepared to hurt myself that much. I realise that knocking off 31.8 seconds would require a lot of dedication, training and bravery (stupidity?).

But you're bigger than me and as Ii recall you've rowed before, so go for it. You've got a year till the next BIRC, you'll be fine.

I wouldn't mind some advice on this topic actually...

I have an erg - a Kettler (Yes I know, not a C2, but it was £300 new in a stock clearance). I am struggling to understand my 2000m time.

There is a display showing distance, and my current 500m pace etc., but it never feels right to me. For instance, when really going for it, I struggle to get 2000m in anything less than about 10 mins.

For reference, I am tall, strong, pretty fit person who runs, circuit trains, lifts weights etc. (powerfully built...) I really dont feel it is a case of me finding 30-40% more to get my time down and I think my stroke rate and form is good.

A cursory glance on Google shows the Kettler has a reputation for nonsensical 500/2000m times. I wonder if anyone here has some first hand knowledge?
