Hi All,

I've owned my first Lotus Evora S(MY2012 - on a '13 plate) for a few months now, & considering a track day or two if possible. It was fully loaded when new, so is at Sports Racer specification (it just doesnt have the black pack roof/cills/splitter or alloy gear knob).

Can anyone give me any advice on the following please?;-

1) Noise - I've read this car is at 105db at 3/4 revs so it rules it out of most track days? Exhaust is standard & seems quite quiet & refined on the road though. I dont think I've seen any Evoras at the Lotus track days I've visited (perhaps one).

2) Insurance Companies - Mine wants £4k+ damage excess (10% of car value) on a limited mileage policy, do any other companies have a more 'friendly' attitude to track days?

3) Tyres/weight - at 1460kg odd, the Evora S will be relatively heavy on consumables. I've been told the earlier cars incl mine had an aggresive camber for better road holding (& later cars have since had this reduced), but this gives higher overall tyre wear. Has anyone had any problems after a track day?

Thank you for any replies!

Overall I'm getting to enjoy it more & more, but would learn more about it on track I think.

I used to have a 2011 S and that was fine on track regarding noise, but your car probably has the next gen silencer which was noisier. Only options are to fit a different silencer or bolt on some additional silencer but this will have to be fabricated specially due to the way the tail pipe are finished.

That's a ridiculous excess...try Mannings for one who include unlimited trackday insurance.

Yes the inside of the rear tyres wear relatively quickly and track use will increase this but it does not wreck them in one day...

Compared to an Elise the car feels heavy on track, but compared to most other saloon based cars it is agile. Overall though it is great fun on track and extremely adjustable and it is the only place you will find out how brilliant the chassis is...safely.

Thank you for your reply,

Not good on the silencer then.

Mannings are the company I'm with...... They normally did some sort of trackday cover for tracks that comply to certain legislation/Organisation (Brands Hatch belongs to it I think) , but Goodwood doesn't belong to it frown

If you’ve got the stock MY12 exhaust system, it will be nowhere near 105dB. (It’s the 400 which is 108/109dB).

Any flavour of Evora is a very competent track car. The brakes will keep going all day. You might just find that you’re tempted to fit a set of Michelin Pilot Cup 2s to your wheels. (I have a set of 18” wheels with Avon ZZRs fitted - the same setup that the Lotus Cup Evoras use).

Oh, a 10% of value excess for track use is a fairly standard policy, I think. I’m with Classicline but I can’t remember off the top of my head what the excess is. It’s certainly 4 figures. The trick is... keep it out of the barriers!

Bump

My Evora S was tested today at 5200 revs & gave 94dB on a 9 degree damp/wet Spring day. I was told if day was hotter, this may change (get louder?). This 'should' make it Ok for most circuits.

Off soon on my first trackday in it, hooray!

I assume that you got your insurance sorted, but I use A plan at Thatcham (there performance car branch) I think track cover was an extra £200 for 5 days

A.Manning, who I am with, have Track day cover for ATDO circuits, with 10% car value excess.

It's just their policy which seemed high, but it does include commuting to work (in it's 5k mileage allowance) which pushes cover price up, from what I can gather.

Their renewal is slightly cheaper than last year, but still over £600

I think it’s the 400s that are 105dB. They’re much louder than even the late “S” without the 3rd Cat.

My 2014 S has the Lotus stage 1 sports exhaust, which Lotus say is track only. I think it's louder than the regular one, does anyone know if these meet track noise limits?

A 400 will test at 108-110dB static!

A stock S should get through a 98dB test. (If in doubt, just close the valve - sport off).

The valve will open up anyway if they're testing over 4000rpm or so?

My 2012 build/2013 registration 'S' car has the 'pigs snout' exhaust end.

A 'Lotus Stage 1' exhaust was mentioned by the poster above, but I don't know how the 2 relate.

I'd suggest going to the nearest track to you on a track day (if practical), & get the noise test marshalls to do your car for peace of mind.

On my 'S', the valve used to open/close with sport button on/off.

It's different on the 400.

Am sure it opens at higher revs on an S as well even if the sport button / mode is off.

Not on an MY11. Used to run it all day on track in ‘Sport off/valve closed’ mode, if required. Just had to sacrifice the slightly higher RPM limit & different throttle map.

(My car no longer has the OEM ECU so the valve is now manually controlled by a separate system).

I'm with this lot, cover track days and my race car.
https://reis.co.uk/

Been with competition car insurance, both good.

Tyres for an Evora, Avon ZZR. Or you can go R888r, MPSC, Pirelli Corsa. Money no object I'd have the Avons but all are formidable

Noise is always a problem but never had a noise test at Hethel, the Lotus factory F1 circuit. You might even get some hints and tips from the bods in the know...

Hi, done a track day last month at Donnington in my friends 8 month old Evora S, and we got thrown out after just 5 laps, due to noise issues ( car was standard ) it was also a Lotus day

“8 month old Evora”. Are you sure it wasn’t a 400?

Ref the poster above saying after 5 laps an 'Evora S' was asked to leave - Donnington Circuit Trackday noise notes below.

Please pay special attention to the noise limit. The standard 98db 'drive-by' limit operates throughout the day. This is not comparable to the 92db drive by limits at other venues. Cars close to the typical 105db static limit will likely fail and not be able to continue - credits, transfers, refunds will not be possible. There will be no static test prior to going on circuit.
