Bit of a coup getting Coutinho?
I must admit I wasn't certain about Gerard's appointment (decent enough start though) but this is certainly one of the huge benefits to having someone like him in charge. Very exciting signing.

He will need to start performing as he's been poor at Barcelona for some time. That could be down to managers, player unrest or many other things, but I hope he plays well and regains the form from his time at Liverpool (although not against the mighty Saints)

How much of his wages are you paying? Romano saying you're taking the "main part" of them.

He's on something like 400k eur a week isn't he? Even taking half of those, it must be uprooting whatever wage structure Villa have? The many Villa fans at work seem to get rather defensive when pointing out how much they spend.

I think it'll be one of those situations where there will be no middle ground. He'll even do absolutely fantastic, or sink biggrin

Admittedly, a little jealous as a Wolves fan hehe

There's a mutual respect between Gerrard and Coutihno. I think he'll get the best out of him again.

As its a loan I dont think it will be an issue. The challenge comes at the end of the loan with the option to buy and what do Villa offer him in terms of contract. While he can be a fantastic player he has been shocking for Barca, failed at Bayern and only so long you can hang on to the fact you where great for Liverpool.

Must admit I didn't see that much of him at Liverpool as we were in the Championship for some of that tenure and I couldn't really bear watching PL games whilst we weren't in it, so looking forward to see what we've got.

The Brum Mail is saying he's on £380K/week at Barca and we'll be paying £247k/week of that. eek

https://www.birminghammail.co.uk/sport/football/tr...

That's a lot of money for what we are currently, a mid-ranking Prem team trying to re-establish itself back towards the top of the table.

Big gamble by the owners if you ask me. Surely it will torpedo our FFP position?

I dont think it does as its only about 6 million for the loan and you can send him back. If you had paid a transfer fee + silly wages that will impact your FFP.

Sorry, I should have phrased that better. What I meant was "if it all works out, and we choose to buy him. it'll be a big transfer fee (Barca paid £120m for him and will want to recoup a lot of that) and big wages thereafter, which will torpedo our FFP"

But yes, agree, if it's just a season long loan, that's OK. Problem is we've not effectively replaced Grealish, so if he comes in and does a good job, it will be hard to not make this a permanent move, which is where the overspend may come more of a problem.

I suppose it will depend on what Barca want for him. They are desperate to clear players off the books to free up wages and money to help them sign new players. He has a contract till 2023 so if all went well you have a strong position to get a deal from Barca.

Barca would like a big fee, anyone would, but they'll accept a pittance for Coutinho and others they have as well, to get the wages off the books so they can start buying everyone else again. I'm sure I read somewhere they hadn't paid Liverpool the majority of the transfer fee anyway yet. Bunch of shysters! Interesting to see how he does at Villa though.

Fabrizio Romano, who is generally amongst the most reliable especially when it comes to transfers from the continent, is saying Villa is paying 65% of his wages including add ones, and the buy option is 40m EUR.

Barca will be happy either way considering they're skint

His first 20 mins were not too shabby.
Wonder if he’ll get some more game time at Everton.

He and SG can expect a very warm welcome I’m sure.

Edited to add … And Digne

I'd expect Coutinho to be in the starting line-up against Everton.

I saw some Twitter nonsense linking us with Luis Suarez in the week, although the club have apparently dismissed this.
He's someone I could not cheer for in a Villa shirt.
I spent all his time at Liverpool calling him a cheat so couldn't suddenly warm to him.

Yes, he's a great player, but the cheating element to his game - specifically biting opponents like an angry 4yo - isn't something I want to see, regardless of whatever else he would bring.

He's 34 in any case, so it's probably just paper-talk or his agent flying a kite.

Suarez on a free is the sort of catalyst that can propel the sort of signings we actually want. It’s a bit like Robinho at Man City. It may not be perfect at the time, but it’s what that can bring after that counts.

My heart still says no to Suarez. I like the project we’ve been working on, the progress is there to see, the money is obviously available but too much too soon could end in disaster.

Really tough game Saturday. Everton were very physical and are a much bigger side than us. Think we stood up to it really well. Big 3 points.

Mings is so casual at times, I put him making big mistakes in each of the Leeds goals last night. The second goals was awkward but he was shoulder to shoulder with someone he has 7 inches on and barely attempted to play tot he ball.

Defence as a whole was having a mad one, Konsa randomly elbows Meslier and gets a red card too. I’ve been a defender of Mings for ages and let his mistakes go, but he really needs to step it up as captain now.
