He'll go down as the greatest of all time. No doubt about it. People say until he replicates his success with Argentina he can't be considered the greatest. after watching him play tonight ive never heard such bks.

Yes Barcelona have 10 other stars on the pitch but the fact he's able to tower above all of them in terms of talent tells you all you need to know about the genius.
Not a pups chance in hell of him going down as the greatest of all time.

He must win a world cup to do that or at least get to the final.(He has produced NOTHING for Argentina at a finals yet)

Cryuff, Pele, Zidane, Maradonna all players who did it at the World cup usually more than once.

Was in my local supermarket in central BCN last night and they had a very small range of Easter eggs (not common to have easter eggs, but they do have some great displays of chocolate in the shop windows which you can buy)
There were 2 eggs with figures of Barca players in next to each other. The Messi one was €5 more for the same size egg... and there was only 1 left

I don't know much about football, and probably couldn't name another Barcelona player. However, I can tell when it's Messi on the ball because of the immediate fluency and poise on the screen. I think this says a lot about his talent. There are 21 other highly paid footballers on the pitch at the same time, and he's a towering giant amongst them.

Absolute drivel, for a variety of reasons. First of all The world cup is no longer a measurement of anything, its a summer kick-around every 4 years at a level far below regular club fotball. It used to be a big thing, it isnt anymore.
If winning the champions league was a requirement for being the greatest ever, you can remove maradona straight away.

Additionally, Zidane was quite often on a very low level in club fotball. He rose to the occation - true - but was very uneven. Messi delivers week in and week out.
We are in march and he is on 53 goals. 70 by the end of the season seems perfectly possible, in a time where 30 makes you world class.

He'd run rings around the so called greats of yesteryear.

Easily the best, and 24!!!!

fk all that world cup bks, irrelevant. It's a team sport, you cant do everything in this day and age, the standard is higher than it used to be I think.

Being only 41 I haven't had the pleasure of watching the careers of most of those in the running for the all-time greats. My dad has and on this topic he's in no doubt - Messi is simply the best ever, so far.

Not that it counts for anything where everyone has an opinion but I do trust my dad's opinion on this!

Don't know if I would go as far as to say he is the best ever.

He is decent, very decent, but you need to remember that he is playing in perhaps the best club team of all time. When you take him out of the Barcelona machine and stick him with Argentina he simply has not performed so far.

Zidane is an example of a recent player who delivered on all levels. Club and country. What a player he was.

Messi is an amazing talent but we need to see him do it for agentina to be the all time great in my opinion

You're both drivel. Messi plays with great players which is obviously easier to do. The reason he needs to win the World Cup is to show that he is great enough to lead am average side to glory. Zidane took an average France team to glory and then very close again in 06. Maradonna did it with both club and country.

Luxury player and too much of a risk according to Alan Pardew.

Feel so privileged to have pretty much seen him play in every game since coming through at Barca (thanks to Sky and Ryanair!) along with the other players he's been teamed up with.

I know its a Messi thread but I have to mention Xavi whenever I talk about Barca - absolutely one of the best creative midfielders I have ever seen and a very humble person who stills lives with is family!

Iniesta too. Iniesta is on par with Xavi I think.
2 more goals tonight. The team didn't play that well neither. 2-0 win is better than nothing tho. Can't see Real losing another game though.

Like an earlier poster's dad, I'm ancient enough to remember Pele, Maradona, Charlton et al, and would agree with poster's dad that Messi is easily the finest player I've ever seen. These other guys were great but only Messi generates the feeling that something is about to happen every time he gets the ball. Best rivalled him for balance and close control. Pele rivalled him for technical skills (and topped him for heading). Maradona rivalled him for unshakeability on the ball. But none had the whole package all together at such a remarkably high level. I agree with others who say the World Cup/national comparison is invalid. Club football is streets ahead of the national game these days. Messi would make ANY team dangerous in attack.

He's got a rare old sense of humour (presumably he needs one).

Presumably he'd also appreciate the can't be much kop until you've won the WC argument.

Anyhow, Lionel can't possibly do it on a cold, wet Tuesday night in Stoke, so he must be st.

Quick question as I havent seen him play as much as you. Does he ever have an off day and get angry or frustrated? I always see him have a blinder and smile at everyone.

Two things about the modern game that upset me are backchatting the ref and when a player scores they will push away their team mates like they want to punch them.
