Just watched the highlights of the Norwich game...christ what a st show. Wenger needs to play Coquelin against WBA....I think he's the only fit defensive midfielder we have apart from Song....Song always pushes on and without Arteta our box in as wide open as your average brass's.

As Arseblog said the other day to compete for the PL we need to concede 20 less and score 20 more.....there's a st load of work to do.

yes Our current third position in the league really does flatter us this season. We're in a similar position to the end of last season where we need a fair few new players to come in over the summer; Podolski really does need to be just the start.

Hearing more musings on M'Villa.

I have to be honest, I've never seen him play.

Is he any good? He's a defensive midfielder right?

If he's a good interceptor it'll be nice to play him alongside Song so he can get forward, whilst we leave M'Villa back to cover the back four.

Norwich fan here - Didn't go on Saturday but listened, it sounded brilliant. In a way, I'm glad our draw hasn't ruined your CL chances. I like watching Arsenal and would rather see them in the CL than not.

Van Persie was incredible at Carrow Road earlier in the season, you need to keep him. If you can, Podolski will be perfect to partner him. I watch a lot of European (World) football and Podolski is clever. He will just rotate with RVP from on the shoulder of the last man to dropping into midfield, he has pace, power and technique. Great signing!

M'Vila is genuinely exciting. He is only 21 and is drawing comparisons to Patrick Vieira and Claude Makelele. Kind of like a fusion of the two if you ask me. Proper hard man who will hit hard and protect the back four but he is also full of energy and can do box-to-box if required. Another good buy if you can do it.

Now all you need is a decent CB (another Vermaelen IMO) and a winger as Gervinho is st... Hoillett would be that man!

Sorry to hijack your thread, but just thought I would give my meaningless opinion!

No need to apologise, we are very welcoming here, we even have resident Spuds!

Agreed on another CB, a decent one (I'd love to see Vertonghen and V5 playing together again) and another Vieira would be ideal. That and another attacking midfielder as cover/competition.

Also, another goalie as Almunia is likely to leave and Mannone is up for sale I believe.

Good luck for next season (not that I think you'll need it). It's nice to see teams staying up, and to have a team flying the flag for the east of England!

With Saints and Reading now up, it's nice to have a more spread out league. I don't know why, perhaps I have some sort of football-geographic OCD. hehe

It's been great to see the promoted teams playing football...Swansea and Norwich have been a breath of fresh air....it's also been great to see Wigan doing so well playing an unusual formation and positive football. Still Big Sam might be can next year......

I think Kozzer is looking like being our best CB at the moment.....he's put in some stonking performances.

The lesson from this year has to be that when we have played well we've played aggressively and pressed teams....which we only seam able to do against other "big teams"...christ knows why.

If these M'Vila reports are true I really think this is a desperate statement of intent from Wenger to retain RVP.....the timing is very, very unusual for Arsenal and they have a couple of young defensive midfielders in Coquelin and Frimpong.

Having said that he's probably seen enough of Song's passing in the final third to realise that he's perhaps wasted in that holding midfield role.....his assist record this year is incredible....I think Wenger said he's got the second most assists of any player in major league in the world this season.

I was just trying to lookup that stat of Song having most assists, and came across the Prem League Player Performance Index

http://www.premierleague.com/en-gb/players/ea-spor...

1 - RVP
6 - Theo
7 - Arteta
11 - Song

That does surprise me, especially Theo!

He wanted to retire last year, but was persuaded to continue, I believe I read somewhere that his wife is ill and he wants to spend more time with her.

Odd that he didn't add anything to Wenger's press statement though.

I wonder if a testimonial match will be arranged against Watford (his other team) for him?

This has been a very strange season- we are in a false position and third massively flatters us.

We have been extremely fortunate that Chelsea appointed the wrong manager which ruined their whole domestic campaign, Liverpool made disastrous signings which meant they never even competed, and Spurs imploded partly due to Redknapp/England rumors and uncertainty.

If these three things had not occurred in the same season, we would now be 5th, probably even 6th. We have regressed, several co-incidences and the fact that Van Persie has been fit for the entire season have kept us in the CL places, but we have far too many average, and downright mediocre players to compete for any significant trophy.

Regarding M'Vila, the rumors of the deal being 99% done were started by some reputable french journalists, however the info comes entirely from the player and his camp who they are close to, the idea is to convince inter and or madrid to bid, as the moment we are the only club to have expressed serious interest apparently. What we can say with some certainty is that the player is very keen to join us, and would reject a move to Italy. 60,000 per week and transfer fee of around 16-17 million would do it, he has no intention to sign a extension with Rennes but we are very far from completing the deal.

The problem is that as much as we want to deny it, if we buy M'Vila there is a good chance it means Wenger fears he can't convince Song to sign a new deal, and he will leave. Song has 2 years left and is refusing to even discuss an extension.

So in other words it's more of the same thing we have had for 7 years now- one step forward two steps back. We invest in young players, patiently wait for them to develop winning nothing in the process as we are in 'transition', then they leave when they reach their potential, and we replace them with young players who need time to adjust/develop.

So it looks like it's back to square one, and the cycle continues.

Nail ---> Head.

Things wont be improving anytime soon without a major overhaul of the way things are done.

The problem with that is the process of overhauling is just too risky without a sugar daddy investor with deep pockets !

Just watched the press conference and Wenger has rubbished the rumours that M'Vila is in the bag. He could be playing a game but unfortunately I don't think that is the case. He said:

"It is not true. There is not any interest at the moment. We have not been in touch with anybody, we have not made any offer to anybody and we are nowhere near to buying anybody at the moment.'

No sign of a wry smile like the one he had when denying Podolski earlier this year.
