I just thought that referring to the fellow as "The Devil" would be a blasphemous statement round these parts.

However, upon greater reflection and much contemplation, I realise that you, the Red Devils, may use that unholy insult as a term of endearment.

The image is of endearment. Paul Scholes is the best English player of the past 50 years, since Bobby Charlton himself.

Better than Hoddle, Gascoigne and Robson by far.

As has been shown many times on this thread before, he is widely viewed in football by people whose opinions matter to be the best English player of his generation. From players to coaches in many different countries.

Played for his country until some idiot decided to put him on the left of midfield so he could pair Fat Frank and the headless chicken Gerrard instead, and look how that turned out.

I wont pick on you jimmy lad as you are having a well earned recovery. Name me a better player and be serious when doing so, EP has already come up with two joke suggestions in 2 season wonder Gascoigne and the languid Hoddle.

As EP said, Robson for one. Gerrard is also ahead of Scholes in terms of being able to grab a game by he scruff of the neck.

Scholes is good but has always played in a succesful side. For England Scholes has always underacheived. Gerrard, whilst not always inspirational for his country does at least have the odd great game.

So there's your 2.

So Robson was an ok suggestion because he played for UTD? You are special ain't ya.

Scholes is a top, top midfielder but is he really the best English player of the last 50 years? What about before 50 years ago? Could you be hinting at him being the best English player ever?

All this for a player that turned his back on his country when he was in his prime.

Oh, and Hoddle languid and Gazza a two season wonder laugh

How do you stand on Gerrard and Lampard, are they not very good either?

Robson as great and an inspiring as he was, does not have the ability or skills as Scholes. Dont forget that Scholes is nearly 40 and is still just about the best English midfielder all be it that his legs cant last the 90mins these days.

Gerrard isnt as good as Robson was so thats him ruled out. Scholes doesnt grab games by the scruff of the neck, he runs games instead, he is the heart beat of the United team, and the only English player that can be said to be at the level of Iniesta and Xavi at his peak, something you cant say about Gerrard et al

Just to annoy you a little bit more EP, the 3 greatest English footballers are all United players:-

1) Duncan Edwards
2) Bobby Charlton
3) Paul Scholes

Alan Ball?, Trevor Brooking?...even Colin Bell?

Sadly these players were unfortunate not to play for teams challenging for honours year in and year out but were able on occasion so influential against teams of greater overall ability that they could almost single handedly turn a game around.

I don't ever remember Scholes doing the same for United against say a superior Barca side.

Frankly, even Beckham on ccassion could do this.

I would concur with that if you were not so blinded in your support of UTD, I reckon you would defend Jimmy Saville himself if he had been a UTD player.

You just will not accept that anything that isn't related to UTD in some way can or could be any good. So to summarise, your views are irrelevent.

I am very critical of United players, indeed I even get called a City fan and an ABU on here for my opinions on the manager, club, owners and players. I dont wear red tintes specs.

You do a bit though. So what of Brooking, Le Tissier, Beardsley, Barnes or Ball? None of those any good?

All good players but frankly none at the level of Scholes. Flip it round a bit and think of the Barcelona team and which English players would get in that team, the only midfielder at his peak who would get a game is Scholes.

There's some great names being banded about here of that there's no doubt...Waddle, Gascoigne, Robson, Beckham, Beardsley, Lineker, Shearer, G. Neville (ahem)....but none of these are as good as Scholesy. They're just not...
