I'm a City fan and I was at the QPR game in 2012.
Just watching him in that game alone made me want to strangle him.
I could genuinely understand why people got shot in America so much when they're allowed to carry a pistol.
I'm a QPR fan and feel much the same.

One of my favourite memories was booing him off against Liverpool at home. He was having another stinker but in his head he was Pirlo. Anyway, he was subbed off at 0-2. Rangers went to win 3-2.

Went to the pub afterwards, watched the replay and the entire pub booed him off again.

He must have been having an off day. In his head, he's usually a far better player than Pirlo.

It's a great shame, because if he would just cut all the crap out, he's a decent footballer.

I think he has a screw loose,

Joey Barton has been suspended from football for 18 months by the FA following its investigation into betting.

A statement said he has been handed the ban, and fined £30,000, for breaching FA Rule 8 and having reportedly placed 1,260 bets on"football matches or competitions" over a 10-year period.

The Burnley midfielder published a lengthy statement on his website minutes after the FA's decision was made public, saying the length of ban has effectively forced him into retirement. His club confirmed Barton will appeal the length of the ban.

His own statement: http://www.joeybarton.com/betting-statement/

It's clear, and he has been open about it, that he has a gambling problem.

The amounts at stake are in some cases tiny, especially compared to his income - a fiver on some games!

He goes out of his way to say that he never bet on games that we was involved in, but the 30 most pertinent bets as identified by the FA, some show him as not involved, but some show him as in the starting 11. How can he not be considered to be in a postition of influence!?

Only got himself to blame here, but I do take his point about the amount of betting in football, it is like asking an alcoholic to work in a pub. Banning him seems fair, but (if the examples he quotes are true) he does seem to have received a lengthy ban. I think that's called 'being made an example of', young Joseph

I think his distinction was that he only bet against his team(s) when he wasn't involved.

Putting everything else aside for a moment, this part of his statement

Barton said:
But surely they need to accept there is a huge clash between their rules and the culture that surrounds the modern game, where anyone who watches follows football on TV or in the stadia is bombarded by marketing, advertising and sponsorship by betting companies, and where much of the coverage now, on Sky for example, is intertwined with the broadcasters’ own gambling interests.

That all means this is not an easy environment in which to try to stop gambling, or even to encourage people within the sport that betting is wrong. It is like asking a recovering alcoholic to spend all his time in a pub or a brewery. If the FA is serious about tackling gambling I would urge it to reconsider its own dependence on the gambling industry. I say that knowing that every time I pull on my team’s shirt, I am advertising a betting company.
I completely agree with. FA wants to be seen to be tough on gambling but is very happy to accept their money. You can't watch or listen to a football game without being bombarded by the latest odds, cash out offers, accumulators etc. A small gamble aware disclaimer at the bottom doesn't make it all ok.

Whilst I agree that the gambling connections with the game are far too strong, I think the FA would argue that they aren't against gambling per se. They just need to ensure that there is no corruption of the sport / competition itself by association & so preventing those with the ability to influence games from betting on them is how they try to do it.

I suspect they couldn't give a stuff about the wider gambling issues for society outside of their sphere of influence and are rather happy just to take the money (beyond the lip service of gamble aware etc). They get that money from the media, who in turn get it from the advertising and turkey's won't vote for Christmas.

He backed himself (only 3 quid ... with his money, FFS!) to be first goalscorer against Fulham when he was playing for Man City and in the starting 11.

"So we're underway here at The Etihad, City kick off, long ball forward, Barton picks it up, he's gone down very easily there, just inside of the box .... Fulham players protest but the Referee is clear, it's a penalty. Joey Barton looks like he's shaping to take this one, if he scores it'll be 3 quid in the bank, he'll be able to afford another cigar to stab a trainee in the eye at the Xmas Party ..... he shoots, he scores!!!!!"

Pissing the end of his career up the wall for three quid stakes, what an absolute mug. One thing's for sure, he's not going to get a gig as a tipster - 4 grand lost on 30 bets for an 85 quid return - that's man maths that makes PH look sensible!!

I for one am over the moon to see him retire early.
He says his family brought him up gambling - that's the problem then, obviously...!

Should've been a goalkeeper. She certainly knows how to keep a clean sheet.

Could have been worse. He was given a four year ban but cashed out at 18 months!
