Watching that game last night, I couldn't help feeling it was a match to decide who will be relegated next May.
Well done to Fulham last night; over the season there wasn't much to separate them from Brentford and personally I was pleased to see the play-off final contested between those two rather than including a team who were, in comparison, also-rans over the 46 games. In terms of survival in the Premier League, I think it's often tough for whoever goes up and, as Fulham and Aston Villa have proved recently, spending big is no guarantee of success either - Fulham were relegated immediately despite having done so and Villa only survived this season by the skin of their teeth despite having spent well over £100m. Equally, though, sometimes teams who you think are nailed-on for relegation surprise you; Huddersfield managed to survive their first season against all the odds and few would have expected Sheffield United to do so well last season either. On balance I tend to agree Fulham will struggle but then again I thought the Blades would come straight back down.....
For all the riches on the field, the old Cottage remains largely unchanged from the days of Johnny Haynes. It was always a pleasant place to watch football, shorn of the seriousness that pervaded the slicker neighbours at the other end of the Fulham Road. There is still an air of disbelief about their new-found status, an uncomfortable shuffling as if Just William had just been kitted out in his Sunday best. Vague talk of promotion to the Premiership, voiced confidently by Bracewell in his programme notes, would bring a crisis of identity as much as a potentially ruinous drain on resources. From much of what was on show yesterday, visions of visits by Manchester United and Arsenal can be shelved for a year or two. Fulham might have their work cut out surviving in a notoriously brutal division, though their teamsheet is laced with Premier League names.

Can we play Villa every week?
I fear for us if we go up under Parker and he stays. Straight back down, again. If we go up, it'll be more luck than judgement. We should be walking the league with this squad, and yet we lose at home to bloody Reading.

I fear we're passed that point..
Sad to say you are right. An 9 point gap to overhaul Burnley is not going to happen. I have a lot of time for Fulham, having watched many games on the terrace at the Hammersmith end with my dad and uncles but realistically this foray into the Premier will be a short one. So it only took 142 years to win at Everton in the league. Great performance, surprising result, but false dawn? Got to beat Burnley (another curse - no wins there since 1951), and then Sheff U, and if other results go our way we're back in it. I still think too much needs to go right for us, and the odds are firmly against. Massive shame as this really does look a great Fulham side, but we have paid for having no striker for what amounts to a couple of months.

My dad was a Charlton supporter, we'd go to the Valley and then to Craven Cottage when both teams were in the same division . Happy days. I still miss him. mikial said:

Get your hair cut get your hair cut get your hair cut Derek Hales. Ironic now because I strongly resemble him (in ginger form) after a year of lockdown with no haircuts and beard trims.
