Simply the greatest of all times.

Greater even than Clayton Blackmore.
Better than Darren Huckerby or Cyril Regis?
Not as good as Luke Chadwick though.

About 8 days later ,I finally saw the Serie A highlights ,which showed the goal discussed above.

The height of the jump he made and the time he hovered in the air to head that ball into the net was just unfeasibly amazing.

Genius !

How can anyone effect the time they hover in the air? They go up, stop and come down. I'm no physicist but you can't hover, surely. He's not a fking kestrel. He's off the ground longer than usual because he's jumped higher than usual.

That pesky Argentinian who scores more goals, creates more for his team and is just clearly better at football would probably disagree...

Is there that much between them in terms of goals scored or assists?

One has done it in 3 leagues, the other only in one.

Clearly probably more likely to mean “ because he clearly hasn’t got Wayne Rooney sent off for England or played for Manchester United” tongue out

Messi has proven himself time and time again against top clubs from all around Europe. I don't buy that Ronaldo going to Juve and winning a league title with them, as they do every year, proves much more about him at all. They still got dumped out the CL by Ajax so it's not like he improved them last year vs previous seasons really.

There's barely anything in it on goals - though Messi has a better goal to game ratio over his career (618 in 706 vs 616 in 825) when it comes to assists it's a similar story (252 vs 214 with Messi getting more in 100 games fewer).

Last season was significantly more impressive for Messi. 51 goals and 22 assists in 50 games vs 28 goals and 10 assists in 43.

Ronaldo's international record is definitely more impressive, though.

It comes down to Barca though, amazing team around him helps.

If i was stoke and could have either Ronaldo or Messi I know which one is more likely to do well.

The problem is the Spanish League isn’t all that beyond maybe 4 clubs and a local derby most teams are cannon fodder. Italy is similar, but not totally one sided. The Premier League certainly isn’t and all his goals / assists over here were hard fought.

For me that will always be the issue for Messi

Are you kidding? The Juve team that Ronaldo at is further ahead of the rest of the pack in Italy than Barca is in La Liga. It's also worth noting Messi has been at Barca so long he's banging in the goals with an entirely different (and much inferior) supporting pack than 5 or 10 years ago (and he's still banging them in).

I didn't say they were st, but it's nonsense to suggest that Ronaldo is proving himself in much tougher circumstances. He joined a team who'd won the title in Italy 7 years running...

Did I say Juve?

EVERY team he has played for, even Portugal.

He wasn't producing the level of football him and Messi are now whilst at Man Utd. They both went onto be better players than the level he was at under Fergie. He's got a better international record than Messi, yeah. Though I'd contend the Argentine teams Messi have been in aren't nearly as good as people make them out to be, they've always had about 10 amazing attackers but huge gaps in defence and midfield. Also worth noting that Argentina made a World Cup final and Messi was named player of the tournament. Their world cup performances overall are pretty comparable.

All his clubs have been at the top, that goes without saying. But it's not just about the team, it's about the new club, new country and culture, new language, new house, new manager philosophy... lots and lots of players have taken a year or two to fit in, some never do. Ronaldo just turns up and turns it on.

That's the thing for me over the one club man.
