Is there that much between them in terms of goals scored or assists?

One has done it in 3 leagues, the other only in one.

Clearly probably more likely to mean “ because he clearly hasn’t got Wayne Rooney sent off for England or played for Manchester United” tongue out
Messi has proven himself time and time again against top clubs from all around Europe. I don't buy that Ronaldo going to Juve and winning a league title with them, as they do every year, proves much more about him at all. They still got dumped out the CL by Ajax so it's not like he improved them last year vs previous seasons really.

There's barely anything in it on goals - though Messi has a better goal to game ratio over his career (618 in 706 vs 616 in 825) when it comes to assists it's a similar story (252 vs 214 with Messi getting more in 100 games fewer).

Last season was significantly more impressive for Messi. 51 goals and 22 assists in 50 games vs 28 goals and 10 assists in 43.

Ronaldo's international record is definitely more impressive, though.
Ajax was rather good last season, the way they won from Real, Juventus and were the better team against Bayern and Tottenham in both legs, speaks volumes. Messi lost last season with Barcelona against Liverpool. In a similar dramatic fashion as Ajax against Tottenham. An Ajax - Barca final made more sense than the one we got.

So to judge the both of them on 1 season, let alone on 1 or 2 games makes no sense.

It's quite clear that Messi's skill as a footballer, his technical ability from a very young age combined with the stats, makes him the best ever.
Ronaldo ís an athlete who's work rate made him into a scoring machine and one of the best ever. But I rarely see him make extraordinary passes of dribbling past 4 or 5 defenders.

And concerning the "he's done it in 3 leagues, the other only in one" is the bias from a United fan. Ronaldo quickly developed and became a really good player at United but only became one of the best ever at Real.

Surrendering a 3 goal lead with 90/45 mins to play does not make you the better team rofl

The two things are not inextricably linked........he was a fine player at United but best in the world? No.

Sorry I forgot you decide who the best players are.

The journalists who voted him the worlds best disagree with you though.

I'm looking forward to the award given to the best journalist, voted for by footballers. Your view is based on opinion (as is mine) and backed up by a trophy of dubious worth.

Exactly

He also held the all time premier league goal scoring record in his penultimate season and sold for a world record transfer fee.

Real didn’t buy a prospect they bought a genius.

If he were in the Prem now he’d be making teams look stupid.

Neither were ,don't get me wrong because I do think Messi is the better player ,but he wasn't that season .

Maybe think on this, messi scored 16 goals that season in 40 games ,Ronaldo scored 42 in 49 .

Give him a goalscoring trophy then....think on that. I'm surprised Lewandowski doesn't get a shout if goals are the be all and end all....

Ok ,so If we set aside all the personal awards he won that season and the records he broke and the goals he scored and the way he smashed the premier league and the champions league and how he massively outperformed the players you suggested were better than him that season ,I totally see where you are coming from .

Good, I'm glad you came around. It was a long time ago and perhaps your memory isn't quite what it was.

Ronaldo was the best player in the world that season, no question.

I stand by my assertion that Ronaldo at United wasn't at the level he subsequently became at Madrid (or the level Messi has been at in the same time period) though. If we are looking at who's the goat it's heavily on their performances from 2010 to today.

2 more goals on Sunday for him

That’s 16 in 17 Serie A games this season.

Truly astonishing

Another one tonight...so far. He turns 35 in a few weeks too.

What a man. What a player.

11 goals in his last 11 Serie A appearances for Juventus. His obsession to score, win and be the best continues. The man is just on another level. Remember him being written of by many ‘experts’ not that long ago.
