Just because someone has abs does not mean they are fit cardiovascular-wise ...

Carrying too much fat as a proportionof body weight is not good for anyone's health. Rooney looks like he could firm up a bit but to think he is EVER going to look like Valencia is rubbish - he is not genetically the same at all.

I am sure he undergoes the tests they set when back for training ... does he fail these every year?

What do people think Rooney actually weighs? 12 stone? 14 stone?
Yes - I think he fails them every year. It has been revealed several times that he has failed. He certainly looks seriously unfit at the start of every season.

Genetics schmeticks - almost everyone can get pretty damn lean and muscular. I must have seen a couple of hundred men go into moderately demanding training (5 times per week), and I can think of literally 1 or 2 who did not get fairly ripped within a few months if they stayed off the beers.

At a guess, I would say Rooney weighs something like 12 1/2 stone and well above 15% bodyfat. I cannot see any good reason for a PL footballer to ever go above about 12% in the off-season.

I really cannot believe that anyone is defending a bloke we pay £300,000 a week being in such poor shape.

He's been that shape for years and is England's and Manchester United's record goal scorer...

However, he is getting on a bit and can't take liberties with his fitness, I think the fact he's reported for training/fitness before all the others speaks volumes.

I think he knows himself better than we do.

If he stays/goes I've no idea, but he's a United legend in my eyes and will always command my respect. The amount he's paid is largely irrelevant to me...they ALL get ridiculous money for what they do.

I'm not defending Rooney - just trying to provide some balance!

He does look as though he carries a bit more timber than he maybe should be - but to expect every footballer to have the physique of a Ronaldo/Valencia is ridiculous. He is the wrong side of 30 for a start and it gets MUCH harder - if you're not gifted with the genetic make-up - to look like a male model (from the neck down anyways) ...

You pay lip service to genetics, but that is rubbish to do so. 12 1/2 stone for his frame is not bad ... I wish I was his weight!

I don't agree with almost all of that (bar every footballer needing to look like Ronaldo).

The very minimum for a professional athlete is to be in shape. Every single pro footballer in this era should be ~10-12% bodyfat at the very worst thoughout the year.

The fact that they are already professional athletes already shows that they won the 'genetic makeup' lottery so there really is no excuse other than lazyness.

Precisely this. These are not guys who lost the genetic lottery! And I do not even really buy the argument that is so hard for a 31 year-old guy to stay in shape. He has all the time in the World to exercise and all the money in the World to eat perfectly and rest as much as he wants.

I don't think the bloke has EVER had any abs - and this was years ago when he was lighter cos he had no hair ...

At a guess how much lighter is he in the pic above than now?

Utd fans want Rooney gone, it's obvious, and this is just another stick to beat him with ... his perceived lack of fitness. He hasn't done himself any favours on that front obviously sometimes, but to say he should look like some shredded freak is plain daft. He never looked like one when he was banging the goals in week in week out, so what has changed?

He got away with being a fat bugger who took no care of himself for a while. He has been physically gone for a long time now and has insulted the team and fans by collecting a huge pay cheque while not even trying to stay fit. He was absolutely embarrassing last season.

I agree that he is a club legend and we owe him a lot. But he has never even tried to stay in shape or look after himself, which must be a large part of why he looks 40 at 31.

I agree with franki68. As long as we don't get our pants pulled down on the price then if Jose says he wants him we have to go with that.

£40 million is the supposed price. I would call that pants down for a 28 year-old with a modest record.

Hmmm, considering Chelsea are selling to an old rival and the prices this summer are crazy, I'd say that's not too bad.

What id worry about is the champions are selling him and in their eyes improving on him with someone better and younger ...
He has not been the same for a couple of years now for me ...

Haven't they got someone better and younger already with Kante?

Matic would do a great job for us just sat behind Pogba and Herrera. He's a player like Carrick that does a lot which goes un noticed, I'd prefer him to Fabinho tbh smile

A little unsure of him myself but everyone at Chelsea suffered a dip 2 years ago and there are certain player and manager combos which work. I think that's why it's so common for a manager to take players from a previous club - the player understands the managers ethos.

It's a reasonable buy, but are there really no better defensive midfielders for £40m. It looks like desperation / laziness to me to go back for a Chelsea player who hardly sets the world alight.

Lots of newspaper talk about Martial wanting to leave. Disappointed if that's true, as we need youth. Cue lots of gloating from Spuds and Scousers
