I'll come to the fans part , but these are not fans clubs, they are businesses, some of which are listed on the markets and a primary responsibility to the owner or shareholders. That in some cases is to make money and not to win trophies although you could argue that trophies should help revenues

I agree that most fans want glory but there are very few who can expect a trophy. Your team, arsenal, Chelsea, man city and Liverpool can all have their fans aim to win trophies. Others like my team (saints) live in hope that we can challenge and one year in 10 we might make a final.... and much as I would love this to change, money talks and our best players get sold (Bale, Walcott, the ox, Morgan, Shaw, lallana, clyne, chambers etc etc)

If you support Yeovi, Stockport, Preston, you aim for a cup run, promotion, or the lower leagues cup. It's different being a lower league team fan and although they might dream of the FA cup, it's unlikely

You're right in that all fans want trophies but for the vast majority of fans, trophies are sadly a dream, and most of the top clubs are not run for the fans, but the owners and fans are just the cash cow in driving profits.

Excellent post sir.
Something some glory hunting fans will never understand.

Or the weird kind of Corbynite glorious loser / virtue signaller fan - sure, you never win anything, but you scrabble around for some kind of moral high ground. It usually involves moaning about 'the rich'.

Spurs won the league really; just like old Corbers won the election. If you're enough of a loser, even losing is winning.

Yeah, you won the League Cup which was lauded like winning the league, and the Europa League which was lauded like winning the Champions League. Congratulations.

Making stuff up helps with your argument, doesn't it?

The trophies were celebrated as trophies (foreign to you and the Spuds and Scousers, I know) and without any pretence that they are the best ones going.

Would it be better to win nothing like the two best teams in the world ever?

Yet you still haven't prised Dier away from that club; I guess 100k is OK for some then? Or will the reason be that Mourinho 'doesn't want him any more', like it is with every other player that doesn't want to join?
Of course he wants him, just can't have him as he's not for sale.

He doesn't even get in our strongest Xl neither & he's worth north of £50M !

Jose, put up or shut up.

When has Jose ever said he's in for Dier? I've never read it anywhere apart from the "ITK's" on twitter etc.so if you could show me where he's said that then please do...and by the way, there was only Eriksen who played more Prem minutes than Dier last season so I would highly suggest he IS in your strongest 11 and you are talking st.

And what do you mean "Jose, put up or shut up"? You do realise that it's not him that handles the transfers don't you? So whats he got to put up or shut up about?

Youre making things up no spurs fan has said we have won the league.

We are all delighted at our season last season as we played some great stuff (not been able to say that much during recent history) and we achieved our highest league finish since the 60's out performing bigger clubs with much larger recourses. As a football fan why on earth wouldn't we be happy.

There was actually a few posts of decent debate then the usual bitter jealous nonsense.

A couple of friendlies and your 89m superstar having a good game against England constitutes your optimism? OK.......
Not sure why you bother trying to WUM on here, Utd have dumped the godawful Rooney and replaced with the proven Lukaku, and have another year of experience to bed in other players and JM. Doubtless they will buy others before the window is out.

So you and I know they will be stronger this year, far better to consider how our own side will improve at least as well, no?

He's a pseudo-Spud, despite his protestations about Plymouth, or one of the other lower division teams. He just come son here to try to get a reaction. BCM is similar, but he's now lost the plot, as nobody is really taking him on, so he's gone off on a full on rant.

Quite funny to watch their meltdowns.

Can somebody remind me what the aim of a football team is as far as their fans are concerned? Isn't the holly grail to win trophies? Or is it a competition to see who can spend the least, whilst never winning anything?
It's definitely to win trophies. Ideally the premier league or Champions league but I've been truly delighted with trophies won last season. Nice to get in the winning habit.

I've had a dive into the Spurs thread today. Just a read, it's a different world. I only went back a few pages but it was a series of polite exchanges by the same reprobates polluting this thread. Well researched discussion about nobody being available to improve their current first team.

The occasional plea for levy to get his wad out but genuine affection for each other and gentle expectation management and further agreement that they'll win nothing but still be best club and the most lovely proper football fans off them all.

What the fk happens to them when they come in here is bewildering.
Apparently there is no-one in world football that can improve their first XI, so not worth signing anybody.
Interesting how they cope with league, champions league, cup football only playing the same XI every week. To be a top a club you need a SQUAD of players which it seems they don't seem to understand.

Not quite right Adam, Lukaku is replacing Ibra in all honesty ... goals for goals,,, he will just offer them a different option in behind but at the same time will over them less of an option with link up play as his touch is woeful...

A fair point, Lukaku for Ibra may be treading water rather than improvement (I suspect they will end up on the same league goal count). Regardless I suspect Utd will score more points this season than last, it may be +10 they need to break top 4, rather than +20 they need to get close to winning it - but it will be more and therefore harder for Arsenal Liverpool and Spurs I suspect
