On R4 Today this morning.

If doing 51mph in a 30mph the fine will now be 1.5x gross weekly salary
If doing 101mph in a 70mph the fine will be 2.5x gross weekly salary.

All part of speed matters campaign.

In addition to points and ban of course.

I thought I heard the max would be 150% gross week salary to max of £1000. So anyone roughly around £50k a year would pay max

Maybe we should call their bluff, stop buying and driving nice cars, all use public transport, see how long before-

1. They are pumping money into the automotive industry to keep it afloat

2. Public transport collapses

3. They miss the tax revenues and struggle with no.1 & 2

Maybe we should go live in 1970 with unreliable cars with appalling stopping distances.

I am not advocating speeding but its frustrating. Why not give us a little carrot and less stick. Eg. variable speed limits only ever vary it down. Go clockwise on M25 towards Heathrow you will get slowed down to 40 regulalrly for no reason. Why can they not regulate properly and on a good day, no traffic and good visibility, regulate it up to 80 or 90. On a bad day regulate it down yes but for a genuine reason, dont make us slow down to 40 infront of articulated lorries doing 60 for no reason

Most people drive sensibly for the conditions. The minority dont because they are not very good drivers or they dont want to. Those will not be influenced by this of course.

They might think twice if a fine costs them eight hundred quid instead sixty.

Still, I think it's a bit of a crap idea.

Speeding is definitely a PART of the problem, and one that can be addressed more easily than some others. Unfortunately, there are far too many drivers out there who lack any form of common sense, use drugs, alcohol, mobile phones etc etc. By all means address the other causes as well, but speeding still need to be tackled.
Very small part ,the more they focus on speed and reduce limits the more people switch off !! when I'm keeping to a new lower limit on a familiar road I'm think about looking at my speedo and daydreaming slowing people down has the opposite affect if you want to improve road safety and make people feel responsible for there driving standards ......

Genuine question, what happens if you don't have an earned income, for example you're existing just on benefits or retired and living off savings ? Does the benefit speeder pay the fine and then turn up at the DHSS with empty pockets claiming they can't manage for the rest of the week and need a few bob ?

On a similar theme, is a non-working wife deemed to have the same income as her husband, or half of it ? (not that my wife would ever speed, oh no.....)

I guess someone thinks 101mph in a 70mph limit is 70% more dangerous than 51mph in a 30mph limit.

Where's the public demand or the evidential basis for this crap?

Person attending a speed awareness course was there owing to the fact that she was caught speeding at 31mph in a 30mph limit.
I had always thought that 10% margin was permitted, apparently not.

Part of what problem?

So I'm supporting a family with kids on my own, and if I get pinged for 51mph in an appropriate 30mph place (there's a dual carriageway near me which steps down from 70mph to 30mph whilst still remaining dual carriageway) I have to fork out a grand.

fk right off.

I wondered that myself, I currently have absoluteley no income, no wages, no benefits, no profits. Can I speed the next time I'm in England and pick up a huge fine of absolutely zero? Or is there a default minimum fine?

That's right yet your dole loving scrote neighbours caught in the same situation would have to pay cock all.

Life's great isn't it.

Again, the soon to arrive autonomous cars will totally fk up this income stream won't it. I wonder how the money will be generated instead?

Meanwhile someone who spends all their time sat at home on the sofa will pay a fraction of that amount.

I'd be quietly interested in how it works for company directors who mostly take dividends rather than salary.

So you don't think we should have speed limits at all....just a free for all where you're expecting humans to drive at an appropriate speed for the road/conditions/vehicle/their ability?

That's a frighteningly horrible idea.
We do expect humans to drive at an appropriate speed for the road/conditions/vehicle/their ability. A sign on a stick doesn't affect that.

If you only receive dividends or profit shares (sole trader/partnerships), how will they work out the fine?

Not everybody earns a regular salary.
