It's going well in the confederations cup. I have seen three decisions referred and two of them looked like the wrong decision was made. On the other I couldn't see why it was referred.

It would be better though if you could hear who initiated the discussion and the content. For me the jury is still out.

It was summed up for me this morning on talkSPORT, where some fking idiot said "everyone would agree that we need to remove injustice from the game."

Errrr....no actually. I don't want to remove injustice from the game. I like injustice. It's brilliant when it goes my team's way and infuriating when it goes against us. And I go to football to have my passions inflamed, to be ecstatic or gutted, not to walk away saying "the best team won".

Totally agree, yeswhat a complete 'passion-killer'. By the time a decision has been made, the euphoria of a goal scored has well and truly subsided. I much prefer the 'swings and roundabouts' approach, win some /lose some and lets have a real good debate about it. Where do you stop on the video decision? Wrong throw-in leads to goal, if it's complete sterile/correct refereeing required then it has to include everything and then the game would be a full day out !!

It's bad enough we have this stupid goal line technology. Was there ever a greater joy in football, being an away fan, and the home team get denied a goal that was miles over the line. rofl

I've neglected to think about the second opinion bit. Been using the same logic as "Hawkeye" in tennis or the goal line technology where everybody just has to accept that the computer says no. Think I agree with you now actually.........

In the future, players will be tracked by computer, the ball will have sensors in it, offsides will get called automatically even if it was impossible to see with the naked eye.
I predict "intent sensors" that track the players' brain waves and know if they did a foul/handball deliberately.

edit,

oh, they'll also introduce some variation of the "snickometer" from cricket to see if any contact is made when deciding who the ball came off last before going out of play.

What do you think of goal line technology? Is it detrimental to the game?

Twig, what are your thoughts on Liverpool's ghost goal vs Chelsea in the champions league? Good for the game? I'm guessing you think it's good because it creates talking points, like Maradona's hand of God. Personally, I would have preferred to know what the outcome of those games would have been if they'd played out fairly.

I don't see a problem with making the game more fair. For me, the only problem with introducing this could be the downtime in between play. I don't want football to change into something like Baseball/cricket or American football.

Elite level sports should do everything that they can to keep their sports as fair as possible IMO, imagine training all your life to win the world cup/olympic gold/whatever then losing in the final because of a wrong decision.
Would have really fooked us up in '66 and we (England) would still be without a world cup. Yes, it was 4-2 but at 3-2 the Gerries were all out attack which wouldn't have happened normally.
So no need for video ref, just employ all Russian linesmen...they never get it wrong rolleyes

I was furious. Still am. Which is kind of the point. I want football to make me furious and ecstatic. And when I get annoyed about it, I think of Mata's goal in the cup semi against Spurs that we got and was never over the line. Cheers me right up.

We were quite happy when John Terry's overhead clearance against Ukraine in the Euros wasn't given as a goal, despite being well over the line.

It's only the money men who want this in football, which is wierd when you consider that part of the massive pull of football is because of the drama and controversy, which in turn is responsible for the money being there in the first place.

As mentioned above, there are whole TV and radio stations that dedicate a considerable amount of their airtime to discussing this stuff, never mind the average joe in the street, nattering to his mates/work colleagues.

The best thing about football is that on their day, anybody can beat anybody else, either through hard work, skill, determination, luck or decisions going their way.

If we always have the "best" team winning, it won't be the game I want to watch.

Ahhh, the match where we lost 4-1 to the German u/21s, were completely dismantled by a far superior team and apart from the last 5 mins of the first half, barely got a kick of the ball.

Yes, this kind of injustice needs to be addressed! rolleyes

You're right. I've not seen a football match with a team massively in control concede a goal, look a bit shakey and lose. It's never happened before so probably won't ever happen. rolleyes

Fair enough, injustice is what you enjoy about sports.
What do you think about steroids? Quite similar to conning the ref in football?
If a fighter gets beaten then the winner tests positive afterwards? Lance Armstrong? It sounds like you must really like things like that? Are you against the more stringent steroid tests we have nowadays too?

I dunno if your son is still a ref, how did he feel after a mistake of his lead to the wrong result (if that ever happened)? Would he have liked the assistance of a video ref so that he could be sure he got everything right? If he didn't care that seems a bit cold, why bother being a ref if not to uphold the rules properly.

I don't think you can compare cheating as in steroids to the referee making an genuine error.

My son has just stopped reffing. Over the years there's been decisions that he's given that i think were wrong, penalties, etc. But afterwards, when we discuss them, he saw it differently to me, and with no video replays to fall back on, who knew who was right.

I think people involved in football have no idea of a fans mentality. I heard Howard Webb today, all in favour of video replays, talking about how angry he was watching the game on tv between France and Ireland, when Henry handled the ball across to Gallas to score. It knocked Ireland out of the 2010 WC so the never even qualified for the tournament.

I remember that incident and I laughed like a drain. I had no dog in the fight, but kind of wanted France to win, simply because they play more expansive football that bloody Ireland and the tournament would be better with them in it. So for them to win it with such a disputed goal, and the fury of the Irish, just made it all the more enjoyable.

Surely I can't be alone, in enjoying the misery of other fans of teams I don't care for, or even dislike. I always enjoy a crying fan in the crowd, picked out by the camera, if their team has been relegated or whatever. hehe

Who are these idiots who want justice? Probably the same pathetic specimens who want all the English clubs to do well in Europe.

Scotland fans, did you not enjoy Lampard's "goal" against Germany?
