VW Golf GTI Mk2 by Petrolicious: Time For Tea?

An inherited passion for the GTI, played out in the Land of my Fathers

Most of us can empathise with feeling a particularly strong attachment towards cars our parents owned in our youth. From being squashed four abreast into the back seat on a trip to the seaside, to manning the sponge during a weekend wash; the sights, sounds and smells of the dawning of our automotive obsessions are easy to recall.

This is certainly the case for the subject of this Petrolicious video. With his father having owned two Golf GTIs, there was seemingly only one choice when it came to Andrew Tucker buying his first car - a Mk2 Golf. From there he moved on to a GTI of his own, one which met its demise in fairly heartbreaking circumstances from the sounds of it.

All of that has led him to this though. As, after an extensive search, he managed to find a completely original Mk2 GTI 16v. With nothing more than a suspension refresh, he had on his hands a car that ticks nearly every box. Desirable classic, practical daily, fun hot hatch and sensible investment. It's what the GTI is all about, isn't it?

Combine all that with a stunning Welsh setting and some beautiful videography, and you have a very pleasant way to spend the next five minutes and 27 seconds of your life. Enjoy!

I had two 8v in the early 90s, including one of the last registered in the UK - unfortunately the only car I've ever written off in an accident.

When I got my first new Porsche and wanted a DD to do the commute to work, I went back and got another.

Eleven years later I still have it - they are remarkably durable and also have that mechanical and electrical simplicity that allows owners to do a lot of their own work.

Love them.

This was a great era for cars and the mk2 gti is one that got away for me. Sadly I can’t see me owning one now. I did have a 205 gti though. Down a country back road most moderns would be too fat to keep up!!

Won one in 1988 in a Daily Mirror competition, my dad bought it off me and gave it me back 14 years later, brilliant car.

Have had four of them in total, for years I would get something else and then gravitate back to them.

The performance and power figures barely warrant a tepid hatch nowadays but they were so crisp to drive, the steering was so direct and the brakes worked which is more than they did on the Mk1.

I have a TT MK1 at the moment and it has a similar feel in some ways.

I had a couple in the late 80's and early 90's. Definitiely lived up to their reputation!

Oooh lovely, I really liked the Mk2 Golf GTi; nearly bought one that was about 5/6 years old. Decided against it, and purchased a brand new Ibiza GTi Cupra Sport....

The modern versions are extremely fine cars, but I still prefer the first two Golfs.

Always admired these but never once driven one. Always was in the 205 gti camp.

Would be half tempted by an oak green 16v 5 door on some bbs wheels! smile

What fantastic cinematography in that video.

I had an 88 16v, ran as a daily driver at 25 years old. I had chance to buy it back last year but went for a Boxster instead, having seen this video it does make me regret it a little more but then again it wasn't that long ago I had it and there are still other itches to scratch.

I noticed the one in the film had manual windows, I recall this was from the time when VW started to de-spec their cars to make buyers pay for extras.

Like them but I found the 205 GTI destroyed it as a driver's car.

I paid what I thought it was worth, but knew I wouldn't lose out if I wanted to move it on. I have already been offered 60% more than I paid for it but didn't buy it too make money. At the end of the day I'd be looking for two years for the right car and finally found it

Love these - IIRC it was the first car with the 'bee sting' arial on the roof?

Always lusted after a 16v in oak green (think that was the name of the colour) - in my eyes still one of the greatest combos.

Does anyone know where the video was shot? Looks like North Yorkshire around Harrogate but can't be sure...

Back in the late 80's a girlfriend had a mars red MKII 8V GTi - I had a 205 but spent a fair bit of time driving the Golf and I really did enjoy it.

A few years later I helped a friend on here as PaulDTS find a Black MKII 8V GTi in more door format - cracking little car it was although if memory serves me well it was a long day driving all over Essex, Suffolk and Norfolk to find a good one from a large selection of cars in various dealers.

I looked over each car in detail with him and some we test drove but still walked away and I think he was starting to wonder if we were going to find one that met my stds at all

Pretty sure it was Norwich where the best car was found and I'd made my mind up that this particular car was the right one in less than 5 mins - Paul was very confused by the fact I'd crawled over and under several and spent far more time on ones rejected as unsuitable but this one was accepted as perfect with so little time spent.

Parking dinks and small areas of damage show very easily on black painted cars - this one was perfect on every panel and by perfect I really mean like it had rolled out of the showroom the day before - the engine bay was dusty but no leaks anywhere and everything just right - the interior looked like it hadn't been used despite a reasonable mileage for the age and every single alloy was free from was kerbing rashes.

When you find a car that straight and "clean" you know it's had an owner that hasn't abused it.

I was right and it gave him many years of service with no surprises

I had an 85 8v around 15 years ago. Best thing I can say about it is I thrashed the nuts off it on my daily commute and it took it in it's stride. I never liked it as much as the MK1's I had though.

Going against the grain here, I found these rattly, underpowered, with crap seats and interior and just generaly poor in just about every way possible.

The brakes and steering were poor and the ride akin to boating. I preferred the 205 and the Fords by quite a margin. Certainly nothing to write home about imo.
