Will VAR Change Football for the Better?
Discussion
Managers and fans wanted a system in.
A system to stop these goals going in and teams losing 3 points which could potentially mean losing out on £x millions in this day and age.
So the system is brought in.
People sit in a room and watch screens.
What else do you want them to do when a situation like Wolves goal presents itself?
They have to see its offside. It was offside.
So no goal.
It’s here for now. It’s not going to be scrapped this season. No way at all.
Live with it.

Come the end of the season I think the only team who won't be moaning about VAR is Liverpool.

The problem is - the rule makers and administrators are writing cheques that the technology cannot cash.VAR is running at 50 frames per second. If a player is sprinting at 10mph that means he moves 9cm between two frames of VAR. At 15mph the player moves 13cm. Similarly - the ball could be kicked at the exact moment a frame is captured, or the kick could occur between frames.
Given the above tolerances it's literally not possible to judge an offside to the level of accuracy that they are doing. They should acknowledge that and not be trying to - literally - split hairs.

Everyone moaned and said we need technology, the refs need help.
Now they have help.

You only need to read the first few pages of the thread to see that's not trueNow they have help.

No they didn't. See the second post in on this thread, that I posted.
When I said 'everyone' I didn't specifically mean on here. Media pundits on sky/bbc/by sport etc were always on about how the game is too quick for the officials and they need video assistance.

What VAR gives with one hand, it takes with the other.
It proved useful for the Liverpool goal, correctly overruled the ref as it should have.
Then VAR turns to st with the Wolves one, these offside calls are ridiculous, if it's visible in 2 replays without lines by all means call it, this mm st is ruining the game.
Not quite. There was a handball in the Liverpool goal from VVD however for some reason that was ignored. It proved useful for the Liverpool goal, correctly overruled the ref as it should have.

I went to AFC Wimbledon v Oxford yesterday. No VAR, a goal disallowed for offside that I happened to be in line with. It was a correct call.
The crowd could celebrate the goals without waiting for Big Brother's intervention, safe in the knowledge that the referee's dicision was final.
We wuz still robbed!

Ive always said that one of the truly beautiful thing about football is that it can be played at any level in any country by applying the same set of circumstances - ie, a ref and two assistants. It was a consistent sport that could appeal across all boundaries and be played world wide with the same set of equipment and rules. VAR changes that. Now they have help.
Everyone still moaning
now its a different sport if you are in the PL. Waiting 3/4 minutes for an overturn. Yes supporters cheer when the opposition gets a goal cancelled for an offside that only a hi res still photo and a computer can determine. but they really shouldn't cheer. they should groan.
Its not good for the game. its ruining it.
VAR in its present form should be binned at the end of the season. if we are keeping VAR, than the offside rule should be changed. The idea that 'any part on side' makes sense. Ive always said that there should be an obvious rule for offside - ie, daylight between last player and attacker. That's perhaps a little too much, but the idea that only a toe is enough to declare offside is bks quite frankly (as in the Wolves goal last night). 99% plus of the player was clearly in line with the last defender therefore there is no clear advantage to the attacker. He's not cheating.
this measurement of millimetres needs to stop.
I do not like VAR but surely the issue is more than just an issue with VAR.
The rules are the major issue,VAR is used to enforce those rules so for example the wolves goal was under the rules offside, the rule needs changing. The second issue is the consistency of application ,over the last few days we saw a keeper sent off for colliding with a striker though on goal ,and then a day later a keep given a yellow card for colliding with a striker through on goal.
One minute any form of handball is ruled as handball, the next week it is not.
The rules and the consistency of application it seems to me are a bigger issue than VAR.

I think (amd I’m happy to be corrected if wrong) that the rules changed a few years ago around the professional foul when through one goal. The view was that if outside the penalty area than a red card should be given to the defending player, whereas if inside the area, then a penalty and yellow is sufficient rather than double penalising the defending team.

I’m not saying I agree with that approach, especially the flaws such as where the penalty is missed there’s effectively no punishment for the defending team. VAR is making a missed penalty ever less likely though with the strict enforcement of encroachment as discussed previously.
