God, how depressing. There's everything wrong with the long ball game. Most of the time. No team should be so wedded to a philosophy that they can't vary it from time to time. If you spot that a good long ball is on, them play it. It doesn't matter if it's long ball, short ball, square ball, etc. You've got to play the right ball.
Having said that, as a general principle, playing out from the back is the way every successful team in modern football plays. We have got players that can play from the back. Stones is one who can. He does it at Man City. The problem is that at Man City, he had better players in midfield to receive it, turn and play a good pass. Like many England players that play for City, Liverpool, Chelsea....they suffer from the step down to International class. Suddenly the don't have De Bruyne, Silva or Kante moving into space to receive the ball, they have lesser players around them.
Just because players make an error doing the right thing, doesn't mean they have to stop and start doing the wrong thing. I bet Messi gave the ball away plenty as a youngster running at defenders.
If we stick with it we will get better. Remember, it was only 3 years ago, managed by a dinosaur, we got beaten by Iceland. That performance last night was miles better than that, and against far better opposition.

You want a genuine answer? One has to be very careful what One says about Liverpool & their players in these threads on here ,
But here goes . He is an extremely good footballer that plays for a football team that I Don’t particularly like very much , he stood in a the way of my football team possibly winning the biggest trophy in our history . There is another reason for not liking him very much but I will not say because I’m currently allowed to post in this thread . I’m sure he’s a great fellow & he speaks very well & I absolutely adore his little pony tail but there is no reason on earth why I should be his biggest fan .
You Liverpool fans seem to think that the rest of the nation is in love with Liverpool football club like the BBC & Talksport are but most fans really have a general dislike for all things Liverpool .
Have you not noticed how many non Liverpool fans don’t post in the Liverpool thread these days ?
Anyway, you did ask
Fully expecting an no reply mail from info@pistonheads.com
No doubt Adam & Desolate will be along soon to tell me off .
Not sure why you think that, I'm fully aware that fans of other clubs hate us, and like I've said before, that's ok But here goes . I dont feel you should adore our players one bit, but because a player is good I just found it odd to make out like you really dislike him.But here goes . Seems a bit childlike to me that's all, City have De Bruyne, Silva, Aguero all part of a team that stood in the way of us winning the league, I dont dislike like them as players for that, i admire the quality on the pitch. I can't stand City as a club to be fair either, but I can only admire certain players they have.
Its like hating the neighbour over the road just because he has a bigger car and house
What I dont understand is...............players talk all the time about passion, wanting to play etc...........So we get stones and barclay, (or however its spelt), who are subs for their respective teams. Yet they would rather be subs and play occasionally, get the big $$$$ and medals than be a first team starter for some team lower in the league........Or is that cynical???

Do you not think that they are trying to get in to their respective first teams? Genuine question.Kompany's gone so Stones must be first in line for centre half at Man City now.
Barkley had a decent game last night but he's no Kante.

Barkley was "supposed" to be the next Rooney....
as it is he's more the current Neil Webb.....(for those too young he was a forest player then man united, was touted as the next bryan robson) the faster he tried to run the slower he looked.
tbh its probably a bit harsh on the lad. Webb WAS a decent England player.

They have been regulars at clubs where they get paid very well, get to play with world class players in front of big crowds and are in contention to win medals every year.
And winning medals is what its about for most pros. Barlclay was pretty good last night and he's not remotely like Kante as a player -ridiculous comparison. His issue at his club is the form of another outstanding young englishman
