Hello everyone,

I can't help but keep noticing loads of number plates that start with the DG prefix, looked it up and it seems that this area is DG - Deeside-Shrewsbury: Chester.

Has anyone else noticed this?

Does anyone know why there are so many?

(P.s I don't live in that area, I'm noticing this over in west yorkshire!)

It will be likely that a big local dealer uses the Shrewsbury office to do all their registering, and/or a big fleet/lease operator doing the same, as opposed to using whichever Yorkshire office might be closer geographically.

Same reason that there's loads of HK prefix cars where I live in Horsham because our Skoda garage uses Portsmouth even though most other garages in the area use Brighton

Have you noticed if they're a particular brand?

I live in the Chester area and off the top of my head I can't think of any reason why it should be the case - there's no brand or large lease company head-office etc that I'm aware of.

We have a DG, but our other two local cars are DK.

A lot of VW Group staff company cars for Bentley HQ have DG plates, some offered through trade as ex-management cars.

It's pretty common. Vauxhall press and such card are registered with a Chester plate.

BMW use Thorne near Doncaster as theirs, so all BMW registered cars are on a Yorkshire plate. Old ones are on a Reading plate.

The VAG group for staff cars use luton, so get a K* plate, same for Merc stuff.

Lots of rental VAG stuff is on a Kent plate too. Big fleets register cars all over the place.

I've noticed a large amount of JLR and Honda vehicles starting with OV.

In the case of JLR, it's because their company cars are handled by BCA Fleet Solutions at Upper Heyford, near Bicester. Hence, they're registered in Oxford.
